Oliver Florent
Young speedster Oliver Florent has become a crucial element of coach John Longmire’s team since the Sydney Swans secured him with their first selection at the 2016 AFL Draft. The Victorian has shown glimpses of exhilarating footy on a wing, most memorably when he jagged a runaway goal in Round 4, 2018 to seal a gripping victory for the Swans over the Bulldogs. But Florent, who’s also spent time on the inside of the contest, is determined to continue to grow his game as a hybrid midfielder in 2020.

Oliver Florent
DOB: 22 July 1998
DEBUT: 2017
DRAFT: #11, 2016 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: Beaumaris (Vic)/Mentone Grammar (Vic)/Sandringham U18

IMO the posts saying he should be dropped at the end of the year (which I take to mean delisted) or traded are an overreaction. Like, maybe the latter is fair enough if we got fair value, but you never get anything close to fair value for someone you're trying to push out.

He's prone to making stupid errors, but he's a comfortably better player than someone that should be in the delist/trade discussion and I'm very confident we'd be made to look like stupid pretty quickly if we pushed him out.
Okay sorry, yes I definitely agree then.

The Fox commentators absolutely edged themselves over Scrimshaw’s (I think it was him, or maybe it was MacDonald, IDR) chase on Nick Blakey (it was a good chase, but he didn’t even catch him), but they completely glossed over the fact that it was only made to look good because Oli dropped the simple hand pass which directly transitioned into a Hawthorn goal. I found that to be just as infuriating as his “I think I’m Errol Gulden” kick across the goal.

I was less bothered by THAT kick, and more the costly fumbles he had throughout the night. He is a light outside player who has been cited in the past as "silky", yet I trust lumbering key forwards and bullocking inside mids to be cleaner and better at the basics than Florent.

Absolutely spewing about them multiple Brownlows

It was a bad fumble but it was a hospital handball from Blakey. He got himself in trouble and tried to refer the pressure to Florent. I'd be more inclined to blame that on Blakey than Florent. He handballed it backwards to a guy in between 3 Hawks players. For all the poor decisions Florent made last night, that was a howler by Blakey.

Even if Florent had taken clean possession, there was nothing he could have done with it except get caught HTB or refer the pressure to someone else. Blakey should have just booted it long. At least if he turned it over, we'd have had time to reset.

That turnover was 100% Blakey's fault.

Agreed. His performance was abysmal across the four quarters. Even before the rain kicked in, Florent couldn't catch or dispose of anything without making a meal out of it. His ideal position on the field is also immaterial because last night's issue was the fundamentals.

That's what got me so angry! Ollie is one of my favourites, but he played terribly the whole game last night with basic errors that would be hard to forgive a first gamer for let alone one closing in on 200.

it was ****en basic footy wasn't it. Roberts I guess you could also say don't turn your back to the play , but then again the kick was no where near him.

What was Florent even hoping for in the moment ? even if he hit Roberts he was in the middle of a few Hawks
Roberts would've been the link after he passed it to who he should've and we would've been out on the other side

Roberts wasn't even facing Florent and was shagged from his last effort

Move him up the ground to fill Adam’s role, bring a tall in down back.

Great shout. I thunk his decision making has always been iffy. He looks best when he plays on instinct imo. I think playing him in the fwd line would simplify his thought process and any mistakes he makes up front could be covered with our defence.

Right now he makes a mistake in defence that leads directly to a goal.

This is what frustrates me about him and Hayward for that matter. They’re fumbling ground balls at this point of their career consistently. They’re both good players but if they could just be cleaner on the ground under pressure, they’d be such better players.

I feel both have been asked to be the licorice all sorts of players, and what I mean by that is they are played everywhere. I mean Hayward is up the ground, forward, a marking target...then we have Florent what position hasn't he played. This goes back to what I keep saying and boy it annoys me to no end...stop moving blokes around!

Hayward doesn't go far , that might be is issue , does he press up
Be interesting to see what those at the ground can give input to the discussion

He should have been kept purely and simply as a medium forward was literally what he was fantastic at as a junior it’s why Horse was driving me up the wall and it wasn’t just him. Heeney up forward till how long? Mills played how long out of the middle. You don’t see Brisbane for instance play Ashcroft as a defender or something

I have a feeling (for better or worse), Cox will back him again at HBF. Although I’m really not a fan, it will take a few shockers for him
To be moved out of defence.
