Callum Mills

Callum Mills is one of the best young players in the AFL. The QBE Sydney Swans Academy graduate won the 2016 AFL Rising Star award and was selected in the AFL Players’ Association’s 22Under22 team in three of his four eligible years. Mills is a small defender with uncompromising courage who’s also capable of shifting through the midfield. The New South Welshman was elevated to Sydney’s leadership group during the 2018 pre-season at the age of just 21, and he’s now a member of a five-man leadership panel alongside co-captains Josh Kennedy, Luke Parker and Dane Rampe, as well as Lance Franklin.

Callum Mills
DOB: 02 April 1997
DEBUT: 2016
DRAFT: #3, 2015 National Draft
RECRUITED FROM: North Shore (NSW)

He looks like someone who is playing his first few games after nearly twelve months out of the game. That's usually done against lesser opposition in the VFL. And there's a reason that is how it usually goes.

I think this is more rusty than anyone expected

But I am surprised he doesn't just start in defence

Because he would be a liability & it would be an insult to Francis who has at least a year of work in defence & has fitness. Selling the wrong message to your list if you refuse to play the next in line specialist defender.
The stats don’t lie. Mills’ output was that of a battling reserve grade player.

Culture is shot making this guy captain after wrestling a 1st yr player

Media was onto something so what do we do ?

Make this guy captain

Spray yourself and not your team mates christ you can barely jog

Captaincy is one thing but he looks like he can't even play football, what the **** is going on?

this ain't rust he looks incapable of playing at the level and looks actually finished

I have always liked Mills. Over the years he has been a brave, dependable and versatile player. But someone's head has to roll after such a shocking debacle of a performance. Sadly, I think it best he resigns the captaincy and either proves himself in the VFL or sits out the rest of the season to get his body right as something clearly is not ok with him.

Extent of Injury is a lot worse than being told?

Looks like he played his first game on debut tonight.

But he moved fine he just looked like he joined from the crowd

Mills has only really had one outstanding season.

Happy to be wrong but I dont think an upgrade from Roberts (C grader no disrespect) to Mills (B+ grader also no disrespect) will make the huge impact to the side that most are expecting.

Again happy to be wrong but maybe the benefit is the cool and collected head on the field

Nah theres no benefit

He's not a cool and collected head on the field

His ripping into team mates absolutely shatters their confidence more than the scoreline

**** off Mills - complete nepotism decision with his childhood relationship with Pridham and Horse

Doesn't look ready at all and most likely too late to salvage something out of the season. Clearly not enough playing time... looks lost out there.

The Troy Chaplin like finger pointing in the backline not helping matters as well. Especially when you just came back into what was once a dominant side. Yikes.

I still cant believe he was rushed into the side...

If he has any Captaincy material in him, he would recognise he is not contributing to the senior side and demote himself to the reserves until he can find some form. Pathetic.

I have doubted Mill’s captaincy material for a while. Ironically it really started firming up in the game against Port when he prematurely celebrated Florent’s “goal” before it crossed the line. A good captain never prematurely celebrates anything, and is always holding their team mates to the same standard.

My doubts increased with the wrestling debacle and his poor media performance afterwards. He looked to me like a kid who wants to be one of the boys, not a captain. He looked to me like the coach’s pet, not a captain.

But I tried to put my doubts to the side. The swans are such a professional outfit, I just had to be missing something.

But the way he has rushed himself back, arrogantly straight into the firsts, with the coach’s backing, while clearly not ready, is close to the final straw for me (particularly as he already once rushed himself back for a GF when he wasn’t ready).

I can’t help but wonder if his return has led to others dropping their own standards - in the same way that I think selecting Reid over Logan had a psychological impact on the 2022 GF team.

Rampe is a captain. He is selfless and leads by example. He is the heart and soul of the team, and gets everything out of himself and others.

Mills not a captain is, at least not yet.

This would show real leadership and potentially be a circuit breaker for the team. It would make everyone, including the stars, know they are on notice and that no one is above high standards.

or he looks soft and quitting

Go out there and contribute from the front

Rampe has nutty moments too off and on field, Mills needs to improve for sure
Are the two examples you are thinking of climbing the goal post and tripping in the fence? Or are there others?

I’d argue that climbing the post was crafty Rampe doing everything he could to support a win (though he should have known it was illegal). And the chain fence thing was a random event; those fences are extremely low and it was a freak accident, could have happened just as easily by jumping a curb. He wasn’t wresting with a first year player while both were drunk.

I'm just saying if Mills performs the wrestling will be like Rampes quirky things, Rampe has cost us with brain fades and silly things too, also been a warrior.

Maybe it was odd timing to make mills solo skipper,

If he is legit best 22 then you are right, he should stay and fight on.

Is he though?

It's not actually up to the captain to throw himself out, if he is thinking that he shouldn't be skipper imo.

That's up to the coaches to have the guts imo

Who cares how he looks. Better to humble himself and do what is best for the team. Clearly he isnt.

Again just my opinion but why should the players do Horses job. I'd like to think Mills is determined to get us out of this
