Would this be a fair statement:

DMac won’t ever win you a game off his own boot. However, he isn’t really the type that regularly makes monumental errors (usually leading to direct goals).

I know that’s a low bar to set. I’m just saying he comes in and does his usual average/mediocre job but at least he doesn’t do anything that makes you tear your hair out (at least not regularly).

Disagree. I think Mackay often makes significant errors, maybe not "monumental" but certainly errors that are frustrating and out of character for a typical 200 game veteran.

I'm talking about his inability to apply effective defensive pressure, leading to opposition players easily running through him. This makes him an ineffective defender that often gets exposed in defensive 50. He, like Douglas, often fumbles and fails to take a clean ball. And his disposal for a 'run and carry' player is poor and error-prone, plus he is a terrible shot for goal

We were the best team in the AFL in 2017. Had every chance to win a flag against Richmond. He was a best 22 player in the best team in the AFL that year, and that was only 18 months ago.

Are you blaming the fact we lost the 2017 Grand Final on David Mackay?
A best 22 player that was dropped during the year, was he dropped after one poor game?

Played 22 of a possible 25 games (including all finals). But yeah he wasn't a best 22 player in the year we made the grand final.

I really don't understand all of this "we haven't won a flag because Mackay is best 22" business.

We shat the bed in 2017. If our stars played to their usual level - we win. Plain and simple.

You didn’t answer my question, was he dropped after one poor game?

Here is another one for you, can you name any other senior players dropped that year?

“Injuries hit - watch him sneak in”

Absolutely. I

I am not sure why your a quoting how correct I was in my prediction. And how I have been correct the past 8 years we have been going back and forth on Mackay.....

6 different AFL coaches. 2 of which were good enough to get us to a preliminary final have thought he was best 22. 1 coach who got us to a grand final thought he was best 22.

You really struggle to see the bigger picture.

Because you don’t understand our position at all, we’ve said Mackay is the luckiest most average 200 game player ever because he’s benefited from injuries to players who he would compete with. He’s also benefited from a lack of depth in his position.

We agree he’s sneaked in due to injuries. You agree he’s sneaked in due to injuries and yet somehow you claim to be right and we are wrong.

You are even posting in a thread which predicted it as soon as we got injuries.

Should give you some understanding into Mackay being dropped that year.

Yeah - Josh Jenkins. Same round. Is Josh Jenkins not best 22? Was he not best 22 in 2017.

My oh my. You need to learn to dig up.

Oh lord you crack me up. Because I said he would sneak in because of injuries this year - it doesn't change how wrong you have been for the past 8. Continually you have said he isn't best 22. Now you are changing it to - he is best 22 only because we dont have better options. No shit. Same logic applies to Rory Sloane. He wouldn't be best 22 if we had 22 players better than him.

That’s just a stupid comparison and you know it.

Tell me why is it this year you claim he will sneak in because of injuries? Could it be because Smith, Seeds, Milera and Atkins were all fit and they are ahead of Mackay?

Where was Smith in 18?
Seeds in 17?

I know Mackay is this forum’s favourite whipping boy, as testament to his name being mentioned in pretty much every thread.
Here are 2 thoughts which can offer calm and internal peace:

1. Mackay’s round 1 selection does not imply an automatic entry for AFL selection for the entire season. And if once we get Brown and Seeds back, and a few youngsters showing form, I highly doubt Mackay is an automatic selection.

2. A lot of mention Mackay’s 200 gamer status, as if it was a joke. I personally think he’s been a workhorse champ, and thank him for being a 200 gamer on the cheap side, to allow us to keep other 200 gamers on the more expensive side. It’s not economically feasible to keep all 200+ gamers on $750,000 paychecks!

Because he is getting old. He turns 31 this year. A lot of tread on those tyres and 202 games should catch up with that slight frame now.

Where was Smith in 18?
Seeds in 17?

They were injured. Your argument might hold weight if an AFL team can get through an entire season without a single injury. Then it has merit.

Until then its ridiculous reasoning.

Not sure. Whats the point? He had a form dip. He got dropped. He came back and kept his place in the side. As he has done for over 200 games and 6 head coaches.
My point? He was poor for a number of games before being dropped. You don’t drop a senior player after one poor game.

Was that the first year he’d been dropped? The second time? Third or fourth?

Surely a quality player worthy of 200 games doesn’t have form drops leading him to be dropped once a year.

What silly 'big picture' thinking.

Next thing you are going to tell me his 4 year extension in 2014 was actually a good thing.
