Should have let him play vs the hawks as a farewell game and to retire then and there.

Has a lot to offer as a mentor to our young side but as a player his ageing body is not up to the speed of the game.

As the sub I thought he was abit of a calming influence earlier in the year. Was keen for him to play full games but now is the first time I’ve had it smack me in the face that it might’ve just been one year too many.

Been a fantastic player for a long time, has plenty to offer at lower level and as a on field type coach. Props to him for putting his body through it again too.

Thought Shiels was awful today. Poor decisions. Poor skills by foot.
I blew a gasket when he marked the ball on his own 70m from goal running toward goal. Instead of charging forward, he props, goes behind the mark. Takes 15 seconds to make up his mind and then goes short to a contest resulting in a throw-in. WTF was that????
His 2024 has not been good at all.

Highly underrated in the Hawks dynasty.

Tough as teak and wish he was 24 years old playing for us now.

Love his leadership and lockdown ability when we need someone nullified.
He's an absolute Shinboner.

Team first to the extreme.

Was a centre bounce where he attacked the ball ferociously, won it, paddled it backwards to LDU I think and we went forward and scored. The act pretty much won us the game
Spot on.

It was huge.

He plays a lot like Anthony Stevens now I think about it.

Actually, a 24 year old Shiels is exactly the type of player we need.

Watching the game again ATM. Shiels does so much off the ball that I didn't notice while engrossed in the game yesterday. He plays his role whilst directing the players about where to be. Such a smart footballer. I can see why Clarkson loves him so much.

PS Was the one that got the ball to LDU in the clearance that resulted in the important Curtis goal in the last 2 min. Just brilliant.

Shiels and Jy around the stoppage help us set up so much better

Yeah. I'm starting to think another year of that won't hurt.

I was just googling how old he was as I was thinking exactly the same thing. To think this guy could be retired but has chosen to help us is just amazing to me especially given where we are at.

Can’t see him going on next year.

But the best thing is that we know this bloke is at the club anyway and will be guiding these young blokes through the journey.

It must be hard coming from success to a team gettting beaten up each week, but the guy hasn’t complained once and has rolled up his sleeves and tried to help out and develop our young players.

That takes real selflessness to put yourself in that situation when you could retire and not put yourself through the grind.
