Player Profile:

At just 22 James Jordon can call himself a premiership player after appearing in the 2021 Grand Final for Melbourne as the medical substitute, the same year he made his debut for the Dees. The midfielder was initially taken as pick 33 in the 2018 draft and joined the Sydney Swans on the opening day of the 2023 AFL Free Agency Period. He played just 18 games in 2023 with the hopes to improve and grow in the red and white.

James Jordn

I thought it was a fair(ish) debut.

But I couldn’t help think “if Stephens had played that kind of game, he’d have been criticised heavily on the board”.

Still - I reckon J Jo showed enough to give hope that he could become a good solid recruit.
Yes, it took him a while to find his way. Roberts had the better game.

It would rank as one of Stephens best games for us

Played a different style of game to Roberts though. JJ was the equal highest tackler on the ground. A third of his possessions were contested. All his possessions were between the arcs.

Roberts was an outside player with only one contested possession and one touch forward of the centre circle.

Yep his pressure was very important at times throughout the night.

As a Melbourne supporter I’m invested in his progression at Sydney.

When Parker, Adams (who I’m not 300% convinced is a walk up start) and Mills return will Jordon keep his spot?

And if he does, who loses their spot? Wicks, Campbell, Fox, Roberts?

Mills will be out for some time yet. In Jordon's favour is his ability to play a number of positions, we'll use him where we need him depending on injuries.

Is JJ a significant upgrade on Stephens?

By around mid season, I reckon we’ll have an answer.

Has looked pretty good so far, without needing to be a standout.
There are three key differences:
He's not playing as a pure winger.
He's a lot more physical.
He's lot more aware of the right places to get to.
He fits better with the needs of the team.

Settling in nicely. A good addition to our best 22

agreed ... more involved last night than last week, and had several important touches
i wasn't fussed about us signing him but now i think there's definitely a place for him in this side ...
having said that, at the moment he'd be one who's likely to have to step aside when parker/adams/mills come back

This is pretty much where I'm at with Jordon for now. Been good and seen enough to suggest he could be a player for us, but doesn't (yet) feel integral to what we're doing enough to be upset if he lost his spot to one of the three returnees. No matter who loses their spot it will be harsh, but it's a good problem to have.

Roberts has been solid so far, but Campbell and Fox should be nervous.

It's also inevitable that there will be other injuries to cover.

I could easily see Jordon playing 15+ games based on what we've seen.

Very happy with what I've seen so far. It may prove tough for him to keep his spot over time, but he is doing everything to grab this opportunity with both hands.

For a trade that cost us jack all, it is looking a good win already.

I hope I'm not being too pedantic (I agree with your main point) but he actually came as a free agent (not trade) and cost us literally nothing in terms of picks.

We have a thread dedicated to this exact question. Check it out.

I agree with the hypnotoad and caesar88 that Jordon is one that will likely lose his spot if/when all of those guys return and there are no other injuries - but there are a couple of ifs there and there's also a bit of time so the situation could change between now and then.

No worries - I had in my mind it was a trade and we'd sent some steak knives their way or something similar. Even better :)

He's looking like a real "glue guy", being involved in a lot of team things, linking plays together and covering options and not making mistakes.

Yep. I am happy with what he is producing. I don't think he is always going to be in our best 23 this year but whenever there is an injury and he comes in I won't fear him making the team worse.
