“I’m studying a Bachelor of Biomedical Science degree with a major in forensics,” Hardeman said.

Obviously didn't get a high enough ATAR to do medicine or dentistry.

Riley Hardeman admits it might take a while to convert his grandmother — “a die-hard, one-eyed Saints fan” — to North Melbourne.

The Swan Districts product was selected with pick 23, the Roos’ fifth first-round selection on Monday night.

The 18-year-old said he had “absolutely no idea” the club was interested in him, but he was ecstatic to realise his AFL dream.

“It’s something that I’ve been striving for pretty much all of my childhood, all my life,” Hardeman told The West Australian.

“It’s the culmination of all my hard work and dedication has got me to where I want to be. I’m just over the moon.

“It fits nicely, the North Melbourne jumper. I’ve got boys like Harry Sheezel messaging me and it’s so surreal.

“I had a Facetime call from Clarko and it’s the fabled Alaistair Clarkson that you only see on the TV winning premierships.

“I’m just so keen to get to the club and get to work.”

Hardeman, who captained WA in the U18 Championships, said it was daunting waiting for his turn.

“Pick after pick after pick where my name wasn’t being called out. It was starting to get a bit daunting,” he said, before being taken by North with pick 23.

“It was just a sweet wash of relief as my name got caught out. It’s really unique having your name called out, nothing like that is ever going to happen in your lifetime.

“It was pretty awesome.”

Hardeman credited the “profound” impact his family has had on him, including mum Andrea and dad Andy, as well as younger brothers Josh and Christian.

But while his immediate family had already donned the Roos’ blue and white, how long with it take his grandmother to come around?

“I couldn’t tell ya,” Hardeman admitted. “As long as it wasn’t Fremantle, she just doesn’t like purple so I’m sure she’ll come around.”
Random question but... how did he get the kit so fast? Article's up Monday night, and he's already in blue and white. Did he have to borrow krakouers wardrobe or something?

Credit to the drafting team...

I don't think he would fit into my attire... mine closer to circus tent rather than that sleek physique

I believe he’s half Italian? That’s good footy stock.

Petracca, Bont, Libba, Coniglio, Prestia.… just about an all Australian midfield.

Peter Matera half Italian/half aboriginal west Australian.

Someone get a message to Daniel Wells, hurry up and have some children.

The number of kids available to us who were U18 Captains was enormous, and many of them are today's stars........finally the penny has dropped. Really wrapped we have class and leadership in the one package.
who are the captains from this batch?

The Italian must be on his Mum's side because Hardeman is a Dutch name. We drafted two players with a Dutch last name and perhaps the brainstrust decided against also recruiting van Rooyen in case the internet melts started a campaign for North to relocate to Amsterdam.

Is Zurhaar also dutch?

It could be either Dutch or German and my first instinct was that it is more likely German. Haar means hair in both the Dutch and German language. I never came across that name in the 10 years that I lived in Holland.

I just Googled it and apparently Cam said that his name is of Dutch origin.

Very similar gait and ball use to Isaac Smith

Anyone with a mix of Rembrandt and Michelangelo must be of good stock!
