Will Gould averaged 21.5 disposals, 4.5 marks and 7.2 rebound 50s per match as South Australia’s captain in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships, a glowing campaign resulting in back-to-back All Australian selection. He also averaged 19.7 possessions, 5.2 marks and 6.5 rebound 50s per match for Glenelg in 2019, while he recorded a match-high eight rebound 50s in his side’s SANFL Grand Final victory over Port Adelaide.

I think we will be patient with Gould and continue to develop him. I am not sure what the alternative is.

If we go to the draft for a young defender, he will also take a while to develop. Otherwise we could look at unwanted defenders at other clubs. But that can also be hit and miss.

IIRC the VFL reports from the club this season has been fairly positive about him, so I think he probably gets an extra year especially given how many list cloggers seem to be off-contract.

I'm glad we retained him for another year but the time is now for him to grab a place in the senior side. McInerney I think could well end up back on the wing next year, Blakey has a big injury and is still learning as a defender, Melican can't stay healthy, Rampe is still a good player but is starting to slip a little, we might have Paddy McCartin as well but he's still learning and will be on a rookie deal - there's capacity for Gould to take a spot in the defence if he works harder than he ever has over the off-season.

If Gould is a player to be taken seriously, he should be getting picked over Fox next year more often than not. If Fox (a solid player mind you) continues to get games over Gould, he'll be done.
