Will Gould

Player Profile

A hard-running key defender departed South Australian club Glenelg for the Sydney Swans at the 2019 AFL Draft, joining the club via pick 26. Will Gould averaged 21.5 disposals, 4.5 marks and 7.2 rebound 50s per match as South Australia’s captain in the 2019 AFL Under-18 Championships, a glowing campaign resulting in back-to-back All Australian selection. He also averaged 19.7 possessions, 5.2 marks and 6.5 rebound 50s per match for Glenelg in 2019, while he recorded a match-high eight rebound 50s in his side’s SANFL Grand Final victory over Port Adelaide.

SYDNEY youngster Will Gould is set to join the list of recent Swans re-signings on a new deal.

Gould, who has been out of contract for next year, is closing in on a one-year extension to stick with the Swans for 2023.

The 21-year-old joined the Swans at the 2019 national draft but has yet to make his AFL debut after three seasons with the club.

The long-kicking South Australian has played off half-back and had a consistent season at VFL level with the Swans this year.

The Swans last week locked in the McCartin brothers – Paddy and Tom – to new deals, with Tom signed through to the end of 2027, while co-captain Callum Mills signed a mega six-year deal ahead of his free agency year, which locks him into the Swans until the end of 2029.
Fantastic news.

I think he would be a good understudy for Rampe or Fox. Where he is not marking the bigger key position forwards and has a bit of freedom to intercept and use his attacking game. I don't think he can play the role of either of the McCartins.

Longer term his kicking game could be useful as well. If he can make long clearing kicks or keep possession.

He has now had three preseasons getting his body right but by all accounts has really only been playing at the right level this season. He seems to have taken over leadership of the VFL unit which is great.
Rampe and Fox are both leaders and are both older so from that point of view you may be onto something. Not sure who else (if anyone) is an onfield leader.
The one year on top of one year might be Gould being cagey, which would be good, or the club being uncertain, which would not.
We'll see now that Logue is out of the scene.

Reckon he plays Round 1. Give him a stretch or 4 or 5 games for mine.
I'd love to see it but who goes out? It would be Blakey or Rampe or Fox. I think s struggle a bit with some of the smaller agile match ups those guys get at timrs. I get the sense at is what he's been tasked with working on in the reserves but I think the only real option is to take rampes or blakeys place and I'm not sure if he is there yet. It depends on rampes body a bit

I'd actually like to see Blakey or Lloyd spend a bit of time on the wing. Makes that defender role a little interchangeable then. Play Rampe on the half back line. Utilise his kicking skills.

But yeah, not sure who I would bring out.

Has the hype of Daniel Currie

hope he plays next year

It seems every year we expect or anticipate a debut from Gould.
Paddy McCartin filled one potential spot that was his.
Now Francis is in competition for an available spot should it arise.
He is a 191cm defender. A bit short. But voted clubs VFL Player of the Year.
Where to next?
We all want him to succeed.

To fit him into the back seven we need to take one of the existing group out, as we did with Cunningham.
DEFINITELY NOT
Tom McCartin
Dane Rampe
POSSIBLY
Jake Lloyd drop
Robbie Fox drop
Nick Blakey move forward, drop Stephens or Hayward
Ollie Florent move forward, drop Stephens
Paddy McCartin move forward as a KPF if Reid not fit
Of course, one of those could be forced by injury and moving Paddy forward to me is really only if truly desperate. Also, I'm putting Will ahead of Melican or Francis which is where I believe he is at the moment.
If it comes to dropping someone I believe Horse will go for Fox. I would prefer Lloyd as he is the weakest defender and no longer the essential exit player he was but Horse is nothing if not loyal. Gould for Lloyd would strengthen our defence more so than Gould for Fox.

Interesting conclusion. I will have to think about that.

I reckon he is the Rampe replacement. The third tall. If Rampe is there. he isn't. It's a tough gig. Waiting for an opportunity. Are you good enough. No one knows, even you. Because you have never played at the level. Rampe still has miles in the legs. He is durable. Obviously on the decline. But Rampe was in the elite category. The very elite. Gould is playing the waiting game I think. Still.

It's a good, if difficult discussion.
I think we agree that Rampe isn't going anywhere for now.
Where we may diverge is on Gould's likely role. I don't see him as the Rampe replacement NOW. Gould might play on the third tall (though I see him on the second tall playing tight) but that would allow Rampe to play looser.
I can see them both in the same unit playing complementary roles BUT that would cost us an existing effective defender.
Ditto for Francis or Melican to come in.
Whatever the decision it won't be an easy one!

I think that shows that we have depth. That is a good thing.

The VFL back 7 is likely to be top notch. Assuming we start off in seniors with the same defence that we finished with we will have something like:
Rankin Gould Melican
Cunningham Francis Vickery Edwards
4 tall, 3 medium/small.
Quite a bit of AFL experience.
Good leadership in Gould and Cunningham.
👍👍👍

And my nephew causing havoc through the midfield
