He’s done after this and him (and even Khawaja to an extent) playing is counterproductive. Give him his Sydney test but everything else should be aimed at getting the next bloke the easiest transition as possible

Internationals aren't for developing players. Either you're good enough to perform and hold a spot from day dot, or you're not and need to go back to tinkering with your game once you've lost your spot.

It's counter-productive not playing Khawaja at this point because he's shown he's the clear number 1 opener in Australia and really, you want that bar as high as possible for your prospective replacements to climb over to filter out the non-viable options.
