2 Mistakes that cost Hawthorn

Didn't he mark it at 30ish seconds to go?
He could have dragged a cannon out onto the field, muzzle loaded the ball, ran around the boundary high fiving the fans, fired the ball through the sticks AND cleaned up the nearest Hawthorn player and it still would have been a goal. Unlike Rioli's "tackle", which was never anywhere near a tackle. Not in a million years.

If Hawthorn weren't that far behind in the first place then the Rioli non-call, Sewell play-on and Puopolo's showboating wouldn't matter.

Credit to them for fighting back from so far behind but when you leave yourself that much work to do at 1/4 time, that cost the game.

They should probably expect Geelong to come out fired up in the first quarter next time.
Seriously what was said pre-game before the players came out...

Exactly. Hawks did plenty wrong, but when rioli caught Duncan the game should have been over then.
Let's not forget Shaun Burgers Billy Slater pass that was missed 15m out from the Geelong goal directly in front.

Shouldn't Hawkins have been called play on, thus meaning hawthorn win?

Not only did he have the ball at least 40 seconds, he ran off the line
Marked the ball with 26seconds to go as for the kick it was just his natural arc

But we managed to make up that ground. The game was decided in the final few minutes.
but had you not been 50 points down early, the game would have been over and the final few minutes would not have mattered.

FWIW if it wasn't for some terrible decisions by Potsy when Geelong were in great attacking positions the game would have been over far earlier than what it was.

Valid point but the AFL endorse botched interpretation that leads to controversy.

Don't sweat it because result means ZERO to the Hawks. They'll be pleased they fight back without arguably their best player.

Besides, the AFL's flawed finals system gives the Hawks plenty opportunity to be there on GF day. :thumbsu:

This...

We can only blame ourselves for our start and congrats to Geelong. They wanted it more at the start.

Should have been a free to Cyril but then there were other decisions during the game the other way so suck it up.

What it has cost them is a top 2 position most likely. Adelaide will be hard to toss out for top2 as they should start clear favorites in all their remaining games while the other top 4 contenders are all playing each other mutliple times. Hawks will probably be 2 games behind Sydney after this round and 1 behind Collingwood so their destiny is in the hands of others. Even beating Syd on the SCG and winning all other games doesn't guarantee top 2 now. 1 more loss and top 2 almost certainly gone.

Hawks likey to be travelling in finals now. makes it much tougher. How do Hawks fans feel about this?

What difference does what happened earlier in the game make? the final few minutes did matter and missed HtB call cost us.

I wouldn't be counting Sydney and Collingwood's wins this round just yet. We will win our next 2 games and our percentage will count as another win. I agree adelaide will finish top 2. If we can roll Sydney at the SCG we are good chance to get top 2. Otherwise its on the road.

True but they are the likely results, especially Sydney. we have underestimated them. They should be flag favs now as they have only lost 3 games and are likely to face home finals. If Swans have a good win on Sunday they are 2 games ahead and maybe a little bit of % also. Sydney should start favorites on the SCG against you guys. Top 2 is unlikely now.

How much does that hurt your flag chances do you reckon?
