Is Lappin actually seen as a senior coach in waiting? I don’t see his name linked with vacant senior jobs the way somebody like Caracalla is.

Speaking of coaches, saw Clayton Oliver on the news talking about the huge impact Mark Williams had as development coach this year, helping players on and off field. Williams was also at Richmond for at least a couple of their flags.

We really need to be looking at an appointment along these lines. Coaching is not just gameplan and tactics, it’s getting players to believe in themselves and each other and creating a sense of unity. From the outside it seems we’ve been lacking in this department.

I hope you're not trolling your own board with fake news..

Or are you getting us back on topic..?

No not a troll David, I can confirm that Chris has had a meeting with the club with discussions on coming to a settlement. He's burnt out big time and it's taken its toll. It's finally made its way to the media it seems, hence the reason I thought I would again share my info. If they can't come to an agreement, then it's possible that he sees out the last year. But as of now, there is work being done for a settlement..

Quite sure it has been discussed at the committee level but in general, committees won't stand in the way of recommendations the board focuses on the strategic level not operations.
Unless the GFC has a different constitution I would have thought the CEO oversees every operational aspect of the club including appointment of coaches. In business you don't have a Board telling the CEO who to appoint. Why else pay CEO's such big dollars?

Normally you are right, but when it comes to sacking coaches usually its put to the board and the board may instruct a subcommittee to form to the ceo

Hard to see how he finds the motivation to push on for another year if he's completely burnt out as of now.

Exactly, hence why he has asked if an agreement can be reached between both parties. He's on a bit of money, and factoring COVID and the financial impact this has had on all AFL clubs, this might be difficult..

It's a predicament..... Difficult to negotiate, but fail and end up with a coach whose heart isn't in it.

Yep, and that's exactly what the club has to weigh up. I suppose the positive is if we do reach a payout agreement with Chris, chances are his replacement is a first time Senior Coach in the mould of an Adam Kingsley type. So his replacement won't be on much money.

Just a couple of snippets then....

1) Polly was a scrupulously fair player. In a game at KP, Dirty Des Dickson was all over him using his usual tactics...and Farmer waited for a boundary throw in and threw the biggest backhander right in the mush. I think Farmer was reported, but I don't recall. But the backhander happened right in front of me...RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME...I was about 8 years old...

2) Peck was a pig...behind the play, in the play...he head hunted whenever he could. One day, he "squirrelled" John Watts ( another very fair player ) I imagine when Peck woke up, he wondered where he was. Watts was a friend of my fathers and after footy had a successful media career I think, in WA...
Yeah Polly was reported alright fortunately got off with a reprimand.

There were changes made across the AFL to all senior coaches contracts in the COVID era and I think it means if Scotty is let go then the club only has to pay out ???60% of his remaining contract, and if Scotty got a job somewhere else next year they wouldn't have to pay him anything. A recent example of this is Clarko.

He alluded to this earlier on in the year when he stated on Footy Classified 'why would you even want to be a head coach?'

It was pretty controversial at the time, and does align with this state of mind of being 'burnt out', if him leaving does turn out to be true.

Oh okay. Well there is certainly no danger he will be coaching anywhere else next year. Lets say he's on circa $1M per year, that's still a $600,000 payout for someone who won't have any involvement with the club next year. It's a lot of money. It would also mean that we probably can't afford a coach with previous AFL senior coaching experience. I suppose someone such as Kingsley, Yze etc if they were appointed, would be on half that

Yes, he's been doing it for 11-years, factor in COVID the last two and the likelihood COVID could impact our game for another year or two, and all of a sudden, motivation starts to fade. Love him or hate him, the man has given everything to this footy club, not everyone can be a Sheedy or Malthouse and coach forever..

I honestly can't imagine him being too difficult if he is looking to sever his contract, as he was the only coach in the league who gave up ALL of his salary, last year - when soft caps got absolutely slammed due to covid.

It's one of the reasons I will always like and admire him as a person - regardless of whether or not he sh*ts me up the wall as a coach sometimes

So long as he accepts that the status quo in setup and gameplan needs serious change
If not would it really be terrific?

Yes.
We have had one the most talented lists in the competition right up until the time Selwood and Taylor showed signs of slowing down. We further bolstered the squad by adding a top 3 prolific goal kicker who singlehandedly saved Scott's bacon in multiple games this season.
It's been an absolutely deplorable game plan and the choosing of certain players who should never have been picked in the best 22, which has seen this club falter in the finals all over again.

If Scott leaves, we may finally get someone who can build a team that will stand up to the type of footy thrown our way in finals. This means certain players who have held their spot for years on end are gone. It means we can finally get rid of this notion that every single player on our list must be capable of 2-3 different positions at any time during a game. It means we finally reward players in the VFL who have dominated. We can start playing attractive free flowing footy which would be beneficial to two of the best key forwards forwards in the game right now.

Adam Kingsley would not be the risk some may think. He's spent a decade in the coaching fraternity learning his trade. He was part of Richmond's success in 2019 and also saw the other side of it this year as they failed. He did a brilliant job working with Richmond's midfielders. On paper, their midfield is not as talented as our own but look at how they managed in the finals in 2019 and 2020.

So you agree with me then

If Scott goes, I would want someone from another club, not Lappin.

I've been saying for a while now that we need some highly regarded Hawks assistants at the bare minimum, someone still from the Clarko era. There's gold there if you get the right guy. (And yes I'm aware all have not been successful).

Just about all teams winning flags in the last decade have had roots in Hawthorn. Clarkson, Bevo, Hardwick, Simpson, and Yze as an assistant at Melbourne have won 9 of the last 10 flags. They know how to get it done.
