He has lots of time to recharge for his last shot at it. 3-4 months could be long enough.
But it's not like the off-season is a holiday for the head coach. Ten years is a long time in any job and especially one as demanding as the one Scott is in. A regular employee would be looking at long service leave after that period of time. I think Chris is a talented individual who is very good at his job. If you have hard-working and normally passionate employees like that who are burning out, you don't just turf them. You look at how you can better support them.

Who in their right mind would be in a hurry to take on Geelong at the end of 22?
It would have to be an untried young coach who is prepared for a long slow rebuild, and knowing he may not be privileged enough to see the fruits of his labour.
CS no doubt realises how hard it will be, but he should be able to see out his tenure rather than us rushing in to any coaching choice.
It’s about the club and it’s future. Not him.

If he’s not in it, all he is going to do is send us further off the cliff.

We owe him nothing. The club is bigger than the individual.

If he's that burnt out then make the call and bugger off. All he is doing is wasting time for us to get a new coach. Or if he does coach on next year, that's even worse cause how much work is he going to put in knowing he already has one foot out the door? What a shemozzle.
I think we can show a little more empathy IF the scuttlebutt is true. We all under estimate the day in day out AFL coaching and expectation management and pressure. Through Covid in the mix. Perhaps some bad luck with injuries etc. It all mounts up. Remember, Bomber Thompson left Geelong completely different man from the one who started as the senior coach.

Yep frustration aside about the last few years , the job and the industry on a whole is far from easy let alone with COVID thrown in as well

Sometimes you need to care for the individual! Scott has given 11 years of service to the club.

And has been extremely well paid to do so.

It works both ways. Every coach (like every employee) is entitled to, and should, look after themselves. Same goes for players. But the club has to put the club's needs first at all times too. It's the way it is.

Ultimately, neither owes the other anything. For better or worse.

Yeah very uncomfortable with the general tone towards Scott. I off him but it’s extremely important to treat those who treat you well, well and Scott is that person. Unless it’s Macron who was screwing us over and now is proving it by chucking a tanti.

You’d off him? That’s a bit harsh 😂

He hasn't been working in a voluntary capacity!! Of course whenever he does finish up, he'll go as a Premiership Coach and have that home and away/finals record on his cv. However, he will also be remembered as a Coach who squandered a flag or two along the way; copied a Hawks formula of topping up to keep the window open rather than re-build the squad; fiddle about with players in different positions; persevere with players long after it was apparent they were not up to it; fail to strengthen the ruck right back to Otten's days and at times take on the "Clarkson" demeanour with outbursts and surly replies to media outlets.

No way am I suggesting to turf him. I'd be happy if he believes he is the man to take us through a rebuild. Just suggesting a decent break before next season may (or may not) help. He is a very talented coach and leader of our club, and I have maintained for a long time, it should be he who instigates how long he remains our coach-he deserves that.

Where are we getting this info that he's burnt out, ready to go?
He has already said we will regroup, take stock, and prepare for next year.
Let's see what eventuates at the B & F. That will be a revelation.
The comments about the coaching job not being great are a concern, but that was early in the season, and lots of water has gone under that bridge.

All coaches have also been under an unprecedented amount of stress over the past two seasons due to COVID. Extended periods away from home, away from families, preparing for games in quarantine, travelling at short notice etc. I don't doubt it's taken a huge toll on all coaches, including Chris who has a primary school aged daughter.

All signs point to 2022 being a far more normal season in terms of travel, crowds etc which will be fantastic for coaches, players and supporters alike.

Are you seriously suggesting he is the one who instigates how long he coaches for? That's insane. No one has that right.

If Chris Scott leaves because of burnout then the parallels to 2010 become even stronger...

Team considered too old and slow.
Finish the season in top 4.
Lose the qualifying final.
Win the semi-final.
Lose the preliminary final to the eventual premiers.
Coach quits citing burnout.

Of course, we all know what happened in 2011...

I am.
In this climate I fully trust Chris Scott to make the correct decision- for himself, for the team, for the club.
He deserves that.

How extremely well paid was he in 2020?

Reading that article about Ash Hanson, its not a stretch to imagine that he would only move for a Senior Assistant role, with the opportunity to work under Scott in 2022, and then be the primary internal candidate for the job - obviously against externals who may appear. Or, it could be a handover deal over 2022 like the Essendon one of Worsfold to Truck. Either way, he seems too senior at a top team to be interested in moving to be a line coach at another club. So perhaps the decision is Scott will serve out his contract, Hansen will shoulder a large chunk of the Senior Coach prep work, etc (IE take over the summer program), give Scott a break and support to do a really good handover next year. If you put that together with that comment in the article about Kelly not being in the existing footy dept plans, but Hocking changed that, then it is not too crazy to conclude the Hocking plan was clean out the Footy Dept, bring in a handover arrangement with Scott in his last year, and while all that was going on, recognize youth development is the future, so lock Lappin in for 5 years to ensure continuity and retention of IP in our development program. I may have gone too far out from the jetty on this theory, but that article felt like this when I read it.

There could be something in your thinking there... the plan more so than it necessarily being Hansen, could be someone else also

Agree, the overall feeling I got was that Hocking has gone immediately with a set of changes. so probably pitched a full approach to the Board in the interviews, and has their support. Reckon it would have been a much easier sell to a sensible transition, if Scott elected to not be extended for say 5 years for a rebuild. So, if Scott is saying enough, then he is onto Plan B. I cant see any of the plans having Scott leaving now unless he elects to. If he relayed that to the club, or in fact does that after the trade and draft period, it is unfair and there is no way he would do that. So, to my mind he is staying for 5 more but with a Senior Assistant, or a Senior Assistant will be a transition role to Head Coach. You are right PJ, it may not be Hansen, but the theory makes some send to me.
