Looks like the shoulder injury has pretty much stuffed him as far as marking and having any sort of impact goes.

I was just coming here to ponder this.

He used to take a grab, no issues.
Now he either can't psychologically or maybe physically. Both?

Wtf was that?

Something not right

He is probably still spooked by the suspension and injury, and who can blame him, you wouldn't want to risk throwing yourself into contests straight away, So it might have been better to just focus on him playing a FF role where he focusses on leads and overhead marking.

Might have been better to play him in the VFL and slowly bring him some form, which gives Cox, Jones, Caddy some game time in the meantime.

Our forward line looked way better when we were running Draper as a deep forward option who stayed deep and allowed Jones to do the work up and down the ground.

Draper competed better too with the high balls.

He’s softer than playdough and I’ve been calling it all year. Can’t blame the shoulder surgery that happened over 12 months ago. It doesn’t explain his poor positioning, lack of pace and inability to impact a contest. He is just not good enough. Draper comes straight back in as soon as he is fit. No excuses!

Well actually it can . Ever since he has had the injury his form has been 50% below what he had produced. He clearly does not have the confidence in it . Does not matter when it happened. The thing is he has not been the same since it happened.

He kicked 5 goals first game back from surgery and looked like he hadn’t missed a beat. He has had the odd game here and there since but I think clubs/defenders have worked him out. It’s not as if this wasn’t happening before the injury either. At the end of the day he has had one good season but too often he has no idea where to position himself or how to use his body. His forward craft is putrid. Maybe he’s just not that good…

He is not an A grade player and he may have kicked 5 in his first game back but it is a simple fact he has not been even close to what he did in 2022 or 2021 for that matter since he did his shoulder. Does not matter the he may not be any good. He kicked 50 goals as a B grade player. He has been no good since he did his shoulder. I have never pumped him up to be any good but he is now worse.

As bad as Wright was, and he was terrible, he was the only forward who provided a long option and at least got to a spot they could look like they were trying to be a focal point.

Langford and Jones spent the entire night offering half arsed dummy leads hoping to beat their opponents over the back on the turn. Stringer tried cheating for a Joe the Goose without putting in that initial effort.

Structurally I don't see how you can take Wright out. Maybe they need to try Cox forward.

On one hand some of the delivery to him has been absolutely dreadful so I think that absolves him of a bit of the harshness people are throwing his way. On the other hand, good lord I am sick of how soft he is. He has been like that ever since he arrived with us (maybe at the suns, but never paid attention to him then). I don't think I've seen a player more scared of the contest than he is. There was one point yesterday where he jumped with a few others and I swear to god rather than extending his arms for the ball he brought them in close to his chest just to protect himself when he was in no danger.

I really couldn’t be less interested in him being spooked. Agree with you on VFL. He's such a confidence player that maybe a few massive bags would help him. Though he might not get the delivery.

But overall, I have two issues.

The first is that he constantly gets nudged off his line or under a contest way too easily. Happens as a forward, happens as a ruck. He is massive and should be scattering the pigeons. Either he's not strong enough in the way that matters, his body craft is lacking or he just doesn't initiate with ferocity & competitiveness.

The second is that he drops too many marks he gets two hands to. He's out of form so it was only a few last night. But when he's in form he gets so many looks. Still kicks four but could take another 5 semi contested marks a game.

I feel like the second point (and maybe a chunk of the first) is psychological. Looks to me like a guy who doesn't really believe in himself.
