Draft Review 2006 - Redo the 2006 Draft

Not a Gibbs fan?
I originally had him at 8 just behind Boak. I found 8-10 could have gone in any order tbh, but I went the quality ruckman, the quality small defender then the good midfielder in that order.

But I can't see how you could have him any higher than 8th, possibly 7th.

Where would you rank Gibbs?

Never really rated Boak as highly as others . So I'd be tossing up between he and Goldstein at 6.

I could see how you could have him slightly ahead of Boak but I have no idea how you could even consider Gibbs being near Goldy

Goldy was only an out and out gun for 2 or 3 seasons. Outside of that he's comparable to Sam Jacobs.
Goldy is putting together another very year - would be his 5th by my calculations. He may have more in him - those that wrote him off at the start of the year look to have got that wrong.

To be fair he was close to being dropped in the first half of the season. Wouldn’t say it’s a very good year.

I'd agree with 5 very good seasons. I'd say Jacobs has put together a similar number of very good seasons. What seperates Goldy is his 2 or 3 seasons included those 5 where he was a stand out ruck in the comp.

Not sure that is correct - he had 1 bad game V the Dees. He received coaches votes in 5 games in the 1st half of the year.

He is not with the 2 standouts - Gawn and Grundy but he is with the next rung of rucks this year. Like Nank he still blows up the opposition rucks with his running.

1 Joel Selwood
2 Jack Riewoldt
3 Travis Boak
4 Tom Hawkins
5 Josh Kennedy(Sydney)
6 Todd Goldstein
7 Robbie Gray
8 James Frawley
9 Shane Edwards
10 Bachar Houli

I like this but Edwards just over Frawley for me.

Westhoff I'd have high too.

A year on from my post, we have the following names as the remainder of the draft:

Frawley.
Selwood.
Edwards.
Boak.
Gray.
Goldstein.
Houli.
Riewoldt.
Hawkins.
Kennedy.
Mackay.
Harbrow.
Geary.

Bolded = players I can see retiring at season's end.

For a draft year that's had 13 of its selections still going around 14 years later, it is a phenomenal achievement.

1. Joel Selwood
2. Tom Hawkins
3. Jack Riewoldt
4. Josh P. Kennedy
5. Robbie Gray
6. Travis Boak
7. Todd Goldstein
8. Shane Edwards
9. Bachar Houli
10. Bryce Gibbs
11. Sam Jacobs
12. Justin Westhoff
13. James Frawley
14. Ben Reid
15. Eric Mackenzie
16. Lindsay Thomas
17. Nick Smith
18. Kurt Tippett
19. Shaun Grigg
20. Jarrod Harbrow

What I think is the most impressive thing about this draft is that it seems to have a bit of everything. Great mids, great talls, very handy role players, you name it. Some decent honorable mentions too - Schofield, Suckling, Geary, Mackay, Armitage, Brown, Jamison, Wellingham.....

Harbrow at least 11-13

Harbrow at least 11-13
Yeah, could see that. Don't think a lot seperates the list after Goldstein, anyway.

I guess it's hard to really rate Harbrow given he spent most of his career at the Suns, which is probably harsh but also I guess speaks to his role.

Kind of shocked that Goldstein isn't higher on a lot of peoples lists.

Don't know who this guy is.

Mustn't've been a Kurt Tippett available.
Trash tier name, Kurt/Tobias/Tyler. I've done him a favour calling him Kirk and putting him over Westhoff who in his first year gave one of the best defenders ive ever seen in Darren Glass an absolute bath in one of the more rare dominant performances, some skinny first year player with the dumbest ****ing haircut bullying probably the best 1v1 highball defender to live in Glass

Goldy has been a fine player but you'll have a very tough time convincing the masses he's been better than Hawkins, Riewoldt, JPK and Gray. I think I'd take Boak before him also.

Ill die on this hill.

Goldstein has been utterly fantastic, He's suffered from legit starting his career around two of the greatest ruckmen in our generation.

To me Hawkins was the best player in the draft.
You could go thirty years in the AFL as a club and not find a player like that as a key forward.
Selwood obviously a great player but there are more Selwood types around than Hawkins.
The fact that the cats got Hawkins for pick 41 is ****ed 😡

Hes not even the best in his position for the year?

Just 4 left.

Riewoldt, Hawkins, Boak and Goldstein.

Who becomes the last man
standing?
Riewoldt will very likely retire end of year. Hawkins I think will play on next year, especially if the Cats are still contending. Unsure about Goldstein, I could see Clarkson maybe tapping Goldstein on the shoulder end of year as they are a rebuilding side and it might be time to move to a younger player in his place on the list. Boak was runner up in Port's B&F so there's no signs of him dropping off, but at that age things can change quickly with a bad injury or form drop so you never know, think he goes on in 2024 though.
