Draft Review 2008 - Re-do the 2008 draft

Hurley should be near the top of the list, he has not been the least bit disappointing. Zaharakis should also be in there, as should Walters and Motlop.

16 games the last 2 year - 84 marks 26 goals in 2012 and 81 marks and 24 goals in 2013. From a key forward these stats are really poor. Averaging 5 marks, 1 contested and 1.5 goals a game put him nowhere near the top of the list.

If you are not disappointed with his output then you are easily pleased.

First rd based on what the clubs would take today (not considering how their drafting may have changed after this). So not the top 18 per se, but the best 18 for fit today
1-Hanneberry - Dees would take the best mid in this list. a tough call b/w a few names here.
2-NicNat - Cant see why the eagles would change this pick, even for schuey
3-Hurley - The perfect CHF answer for the dockers in this draft
4-Hartlett. would port take the risk on the injury prone gun? my guess is yes. too good to pass up.
5-Zaharakis - B&F winner and forward/mid with a ton of run.
6-Beams - Best player available. Would have him in the Carlton 22 before either of Yarran or Garlett.
7-Rockliff - tough call for the lions between the players they have (Rich, Redden and Rockliff) and the talent available. not many i would trade rocklike for though
8-Ballantyne - Best small forward available for the tiger.
9-Sidebottom - tough call for the roos. the bash and crash of ziebell or the class of sidebottom. if it were my pick, i would go with class.
10-Sloane - local boy for the crows and an absolute jet.
11-Walters - Best small forward available. Would readily replace Krakouer
12-Suckling - Hard to pick what the swans would need most. With Hanneberry gone, perhaps a midfielder, but Suckling off half back is too good to turn up
13-Breust - Lack of small forward options at the saints would lead me to one of the more consistent small forwards in the comp.
14-Garlett - Best small forward left and a major gap for the dogs. With falls and stronger mid-height forwards in abundance, a quick, classy crumbing small forward would complete their setup
15-Ziebell - Hard nut, bash and crash midfielder - fits the mould and a steal at 15 for Geelong.
16-Schuey - Pack breaking run and good as an inside mid. Would have him in the top 10 overall by a mile.

bit of a different spin.
Would put Hurley at about 11 and Schuey in his spot. Ziebell at 12 and everyone moves down a spot.

Wow - Hurley and Zaka in front of Beams? AA, B&F & premiership player.

He has been decidedly average for such a hyped player.

His per game statistics are not far off some of the better forwards in the game. Considering he gets moved back more than most, continues to have bad luck with injuries, gets the best defender erach week and has been playing in a disfunctional forwardline, I would suggest his output has been pretty good. Certainly a lot better than Ziebell's, as has that of Zaharakis and the other players mentioned.

based on needs, i could see it happening. Beams would be down on the shopping list for the dockers with Barlow, Mundy, Fyfe, Hill, Crowley etc running through that midfield. A CHF/CHB monster who was AFL ready from day one wouldn't be passed up.
And Zaka was line ball. Where the team that had the pick lined up with a player they would likely take, I opted to send the player to their club. Would essendon swap Zaka for Beams today? who knows but i think given what he has achieved, they wouldn't entertain the trade for either of Hurley or Zaka.

Stats between Zaka and Beams are fairly even too. Just a smudge in Beam's favour and he has been playing in the better team since they started.

Zaharakis ahead of Beams, Sloane and Ziebell. That's crazy talk.

as above, this isn't the order i rate them in, but the way i think the draft would pan out. Dons were keen on Zaka going into the draft and were pleased enough to take him before Beams despite how highly Beams was rated. If the draft was held today, i still think essendon would take Zaka before Beams if Hurley wasn't available.

Beams was taken at 29, how highly rated was he before the draft exactly? Beams would be taken by every team before Zaha.

You need to get your blinkers off - rank Zaka 5th and Ziebell 15th - YET - Zaka and Ziebell are both around the 20 touches per game - the difference is one gets the other is given it. Ziebell also kicked twice as many goals this year playing 3 less games.

The last 2 years Beams has averaged over 30 disposals a game and Zaka 22.

That is a lot bigger than a smudge in Beam's favour. Madness if essendon did not jump at that swap. AA quality player.

Zaka has won a BnF in a team that played finals - Ziebell has never finished higher than 6th.

They're a lot closer than a 10 player gap but Zaka would still be marginally in front.

I think he was touted a potential top 10 pick before that. Fairly sure i recall he wasn't supposed to last the first round.

Wild Bill - i looked at stats over their careers, not the last two years. Beams missed a lot of footy this year, Zaka the year before. Their average stats are fairly close.

Well that is your opinion - I think they at least drew level in 2013.

As you would know if you really are Jobe Watson - inside mids take a longer to produce their best - especially after having 2 broken legs. He is coming.

Beams is ahead in literally every single statistic, he even has more frees for and less frees against!

Point is that every team would take Beams before Zaharakis, every single team.

He's had 3 years clear of any major injuries. How long will the injury excuses last? Needs to get his endurance up to AFL standard and improve his consistency.

Liam Anthony avergae's 22 touchs Zaka 19. Not sure going back to day 1 is a good way to judge the worth of a player. Watson averged 10 touches in his first 3 years. Early years are not worth a pinch of goat poo.

Well he had 1 less touch and played less game time than Zaka. There was little between them in 2013. Jack also did a lot more grunt work and kicked alot more goals.

1. Nicnat
2. Vickery
3. Walters
4. Beams
5. Rockliff
6. Hannebery
7. Hartlett
8. Ziebell
9. Sloane
10. Ballantine

Come on!!! Just as I have had to deal with the crippling essendon bias you come along a plonk Vickery at number 2!!

Lord - give me strength........

look 200cm 22 year old , the only player in the league to take 100 marks, 100 hit outs and kick 30 goals last year.

I know it is very unfashionable to rate Tyrone as footballer at the moment but I am sure all the group thinkers on bigfooty will catch on eventually, they usually do.;)

I love Zaka but no way he deserves to be rated ahead of Beams.

Vickery should not be as well. End of the day - Beams, NicNat and Haneberry have played at such a high level they are now All Australian’s. They have proved they can play at a high level over an entire season.

Actually performance >>>>>>>> potential performance.
