That's a shame as your side tried something today that most other teams haven't the balls to do and that was to take on the Pies at full tilt and with purpose.

Good on the Bombers for trying against all the odds.

Exactly right. Essendon took the game on and it pulled it off for the first half. Their first half was excellent. The rest was the same as last week. No talls down back so when we lost competitiveness in the midfield we were badly exposed.

Essendon Vs Geelong had over 43K in Round 15

We'll get 40K+ for the Sydney and possibly Western Bulldogs games over the next two weeks too.

No Chance of Cracking 40,000 against Sydney and if you guys's lose to Sydney no hope of getting 40,000 against the doggies either!

against Collingwood 73,000 turned up which was a good crowd but where were all the Essendon fans. For a team that is Regarded as the Second most popular club in Victoria Behind the Pies there would of only been
around 23,000 of the 73,000 at that game supporting essendon!

And yes bomber fans would say it was an away game you guy's were just outside the 8 but and you were comming from winning 4 out of your 5 last games so really in hindsight there were roughly about 10,000 bomber fans that did not show up to the pies game!

How many of your 71K fans turned up to your Round 2 away game Vs North Melbourne in a crowd of only 40K?????

Wouldn't have even been 20K and you ARE the reigning premiers. Now that's damn worrying.

Suppose Etihad will be the excuse.

Why waste our time going to Etihad? Shit venue that a club with more members than it holds should never have to play at

But nice joke claiming that 20,000 North supporters showed up to a game :D

What timing. We won 4 of past 5.. Much more powerful fact was that Essendon supporters believed their team entered this match expecting to lose by over 100 points given we had a side that was physically incapable of matching it with Collingwood - heck we couldn't even match it in the 2nd half against Carlton due to injury. The injuries to Hurley was the last straw for most Bomber fans who collectively decided to no show. Whilst you may well argue supporters should stay through thick and thin, and Essendon had been playing ok the weeks prior to Carlton, fact is there was a vast majority of Essendon fans who didn't want to witness an absolute shallacking. This was reflected in the stands.

ANZAC Day this year (when Essendon outnumbered the mightly Collingwood in the stands with what would have been a 60/40 split) was proof that when Essendon are seen to have a fighting chance the supporters come out in their droves. We will miss the finals in 2011 but that still hasn't stopped us averaging 71,500 at the MCG in 8 matches and also drawing almosts 1.1million to its 22 matches by years end.

Imagine what they could do if they were in Carltons position and top 4 chance??

No they didn't actually. Collingwood own Essendon in every crowd figure and always will.

If this was the NRL, these numbers would be huge!!!

So why didn't Essendon vs Collingwood on a beautiful sunday afternoon get a larger crowd then Essendon vs Carlton the week before.
It's ok too admit you don't always get the best crowds in (I'm looking at you eddiesmith).
Thought that was already well explained here - by an Essndon supporter. Basically, the Dons barrackers had no expectations apart from witnessing a shallacking, and therefore did not show up. The Pies barrackers were there as per usual -

I'm all for baseless claims but the crowds of Essendon and Collingwood have historically been quite close. Since the AFL began, Essendon has outdrawn Collingwood to its home games in 9 years, Collingwood has outdrawn Essendon in 12 years and there was one draw (Collingwood averaged 5 more people per home game, which isn't statistically significant).

Most of the movements are based on form. Essendon dominated the 90s, which was a weak period for Collingwood. Collingwood has picked up, as the Bombers form deteriorated and they moved to Docklands, which caused a visible level shift in their crowd.

The idea that Collingwood will always be the most popular team is quite frankly absurd and not consistent with the data.

Actually it is based on fact.
Throughout history of AFL/VFL Collingwood have been watched by 66,055,803 people while Essendon have been watched by 56,891,153 people. Just a differential of 10 million people.

Collingwood have the largest finals crowd in history with a crowd of 121,696
Collingwood have the highest Home and Away Crowd in history of 99,346
The four biggest home and Away crowds in history involve Collingwood and incredibly this was against 4 different teams in Melbourne, Essendon, Hawthorn and Richmond. This is astounding.
Collingwood have the season record for the greatest attendance.
Of the last 25 games in a H and A seson that have attracted a crowd of 80,000 plus Collingwood have been involved in 20 of these.
Collingwood through recent H and A seasons have drawn crowds of 80,000 plus against Essendon, Carlton, Hawthorn, Geelong, St Kilda. We have even drawn 70,000 plus to a Sydney H and A game.
There are hundreds more stats I will add tonight. Collingwood are the crowd KINGS. Always will be.

So In fact what you are Saying is that Essendon are the biggest bandwagenors the the Competion! On anzac Day i would say 45,000 were Essendon fans and 35,000 were Collingwood due to it being a Essendon Home game! it would of been reversed it it was a Collingwood home game tho.

But apart from losing to the blues the week before you guy's had won 4 in a row!

If you were at the Game last sunday the turnout from Essendon fans was poor! out of the 73,000 that was at the game 50,000 were easily Collingwood to about 23,000 Essendon!

Carlton who is another big club lost the week before against the bulldogs then played Collingwood in front of 86,000 fans and 35,000 were Blue fans so they did not jump off the bandwagon and not too many blue fans were expecting to beat collingwood!

Essendon fans = soft fair weather fans!

There are hundreds more stats I will add tonight. Collingwood are the crowd KINGS. Always will be.

It will be hard to top their averages although Carlton & Essendon may be a little closer than that listed if The MCG was their home ground.
Doing the numbers Essendon would be around the 55K mark and Carlton around 53-54K.

The crowd drawing is important but so is the profit derived from each match.

Does anyone know:

1. The break even crowd figures for the MCG and Etihad?
2. The average profit per person after the break even figure for both the respective grounds?

Quantity over quality, perhaps?

Yes I am sure as the reigning Premier and the team that has lost only one game we are concerned about quality. I would be more concerned about the quality of a team that is about to enter its 12th season without a Premiership.

I was referring the quality of the supporters.

But if you want to play that game, Pies have won two premierships in the last 50 years to Essendon's six. And we'll get another in 2013.
