If Ling retires or plays on and relinquishes the captaincy, it seems to be somewhat a fait accomplit that Selwood will be captain.
Of course, he would/will be an outstanding captain, but surely Jimmy Bartel must be in the conversation?
Brownlow/NS/multiple AA and an inspiration all over the ground. Selfless team player.
Given Sel is only 23, could he wait another year or two?

Re: JB for Captain?

I'd be happy with Bartel, Chappy, Joel Corey, Scarlo etc as captain. All great leaders, all great clubmen.

But I think it is Selwood. He'll be a long term captain that will grow with the role as the team grows and reforms.

Re: JB for Captain?

Judging by how all the sunday footy shows had Selwood and Lingy on as the cats spokesmen, I would say the decision has been made.

Re: Next year's captain

Jimmy & Joel co-captains.

I'd actually personally pick Jimmy over Joel at this stage but wont be at all disappointed if they go with Joel straight up.

Re: Next year's captain

Can we go the "co-captaincy" way? Give Joel Selwood the go but also have Ling helping him and then at the end of next year hand over the full captaincy to him? Any ideas or opinions?

i was thinking that even if Lingy plays on, should he hand the captaincy over next year anyway? Come the end of 2012 his fitness etc could be an issue and if he's still captain it could raise an awkward situation.

Re: Next year's captain

Definately Joel Selwood he is a good leader on and off the field by the way he talks and by the way he plays for his team. Puts his body on the line and sets a good benchmark for the younger players.

Re: Next year's captain

Whether Ling comes back or not, it's time for Selwood to take over.

Captain: Joel Selwood
Vice Captain: James Kelly
Leadership Group: Jimmy Bartel, Corey Enright, Harry Taylor, Joel Corey, Andrew Mackie and one of the kids (probably Duncan).

Ling would be in the LG too, if he stays on.

Re: Next year's captain

definately selwood, great leadership qualities for someone of his age

if ling plays on he should be rested a lot like a lot of the older guys, who knows how he will end season 2012

we have heaps of leadership onfield it's what makes us a great team

Re: Next year's captain

I'd like to see Lingy go one more year and bring in a few more rookies and get Selwood doing a bit more as the year progresses for the change over in 2013.

Re: Next year's captain

Definetly Selwood. If he is appointed soon he could be captain for 10 years, which if I am correct would make him our longest running captain? (Hickey on 8? 9?)

Re: Next year's captain

The club made a statement when they appointed Selwood as sole vice-captain, and with Selwood now a 100+ game "veteran", he's ready to lead should Ling step aside.

Absolutely.

There's no doubt that Selwood will be our next captain.

Whether it's now or in 12 months time is the real question to be answered.

Re: Next year's captain

Bartel deserves it if he wants it in my opinion. Ling only captained 2 years right? Not like you need a long serving captain. Not that it makes much difference, our captain was a crack addict and we almost won a grand final so maybe just chuck the biggest dolt in there

Re: Next year's captain

Think if Ling goes on next year, which is 'ok' by me, he needs to understand its best for his own sake, so it allows him to concentrate on his own game.

He doesn't want the media criticising him and speculating on him all year long, and the club can do without the negative press which will come from the anti-Geelong Melbourne media.

Probably like to see Jimmy have the honor for a year or two, if not, Joel.
