With our second round pick, I'd like to see us pick up someone with the following:
  1. Is a "footballer" as opposed to an athlete
  2. Is good by foot and makes composed on-field decisions
  3. Favours kicking over handballing
  4. Has a relatively mature body
  5. Has a high likelihood of playing AFL in 2013
Obviously that's asking quite a bit, but it's not unreasonable to ask for 4 out of the above 5. We need to get the standard of our kicking up.

AND isn't afraid to put their head over the ball.

The most glaring deficiency in our team this year has been the ability for our midfielders to break through the half forward line and hit a player inside 50. With Cooney out the only 2 players who can do it regularly are Griffen and Dalhouse but if they get tagged we really struggle. I think that is why supporters want to see players like Mayes and Stringer at the club. Mayes is quick and has an elite long kick and stringer at his best is not far behind. From what I've seen Wines is a bit one paced and is a safe kick, not a damaging one so would not really offer that. I also am a bit sceptical about inside mids who get a lot of the ball but are 20kg heavier than some of their oponents. Once in the AFL they won't enjoy the same physical dominance which is their biggest weapon at junior level. Players can generally add bulk (unless it's Jarad Grant) but it's hard to improve speed and kicking skills. I also like the look of O'Rourke because he has the pace to break lines and can win his own ball. He has plenty of upside. I like Mayes and O'Rourke but if Stringer can test well in the physical aspects at draft camp then he get's my vote too.

Welcome to BF, what a nice, balanced assessment of our drafting strategy, I like it.

I would trade him for a fourth round pick if it meant not having to pay his salary next year.
I don't think he is the type player who would protect our young guys anyway, more likely to put his stops in Talia's back trying to take mark of the year.
What will we do with that salary? We have to pay a certain percentage of the cap regardless - we are hardly going to be in a position where we need to lose players to stay under the cap

Just curious, what are everyone's thoughts on Jed Lamb from Sydney? Small OR marking forward sort of in the mould of Mark LeCras. Skillful, quick off the mark and with very good goal sense. Could be good back up for Dahl in the pocket. Was taken at pick 21 in 2010 and has spent the last two seasons just bulking up. He's contracted 'til the end of next season, so we'd have to trade, but I'd love to see him at the club. Thoughts?

It's not about cap space - I don't think his contribution next year will be worth the money we would be paying him.
We could set up a stand alone VFL team with the money Lake earns in one year, and that would be far more benefitial to our club.
For a club that has to keep the purse strings tight, Lake simply represents a bad investment of funds.
If we need to pay a certain percentage of the salary cap, front load a bunch of contracts so we can be in a position to grab a free agent when we are next pushing for a flag.

Does anyone believe Marko can become a servicable full back? I just have this feeling our club won't let him go. Macca's in love with his attitude. I'll be the first to say he's frustrating, but i do feel there's a tiny tiny chance he'll get it with enough experience. Having said that we do have a ridiculously large amount of kpds particularly with Rough back there. But Macca has said Rough may just be back there in a learning period about how tenacious and competitive you have to be, and it could just be good experience for him before becoming that forward second ruck again.
Markovic can't become a decent full back. He's slow, makes poor decisions and has poor disposal. I just don't see if with him at all.

Caddy has officially announced he will leave the Suns for a Victorian team. Should we have a crack?

I wouldn't want to give up 5 or 6 for him which is what I would expect GC to be asking so it's a no from me.

His Dad is sick in Windy Hill. He'll only want to go to Essendon. :p

He will only want to go to Essendon but if another club will offer the Suns a better deal I think they would take it.

I think Essendon would need to do a deal with someone to try and get a first round pick to get Caddy, since they'll need to use their first on Daniher.
They aren't the easiest to deal with, so it will be interesting how that pans out.

Wouldn't want us to give pick 5 or 6 for him.

Don't really want Caddy here to be honest.

Would have to give up overs for him considering where he went in the draft. Wonder if he could somehow trade Sherman and our 3rd rounder for a higher 2nd rounder. I'm against trading Jarrod Grant.

I heard David King talk about Caddy on SEN. He rated him highly and thought he could be as good as Pendlebury. If that is correct, pick 5 or 6 to get the deal done would be worth it. We should have a crack.

Reckon GC will want Gumbleton and a pick upgrade. GC need key position players and we don't have any that a) we can afford to give up and b) that we could give up without also needing to give up a decent draft pick.

Players we could get at 5 or 6 I rate higher than Caddy. He was a pick 7 only two years ago, in a weaker first round than this draft. Better options available, imo, and I don't think it would be worth it.

Would make sense. What picks do you think?

Just had an exciting thought! Caddy leaving increases the likelihood of GC bidding on Viney, since they lack inside mids.

Doesn't Caddy have more of an inside game? Given we're likely to get Hunter and noting the mids we already have, we'd be better off keeping our picks

I reckon we offer Grant and pick 27 for Caddy and despite the fact that its a bad deal for them we just leave it on the table and see how we go. They don't have much bargaining power so they need St Kilda, Richmond or Carlton to give up their first pick. This is likely but hey, gotta be in it to win it. I rate Caddy think he's a really clever player with a great career ahead of him

I'd imagine they'd want probably Liam Jones and a 3rd rounder in a best case scenario. Any other tall and they'd want a 2nd rounder. We would be stupid to throw the 2nd rounder away (3rd not so much as it just means we get Hunter with our 4th instead). So it just isn't going to happen.

BTW, everyone is very much sold on outside mids in this draft but the maximum amount we should be getting is one outside mid. I'd secretly love if we got Wines and Stringer/Hogan if this draft. The bigger, tougher and better the attitude the better. Watching Sydney work over Adelaide on saturday just made me think how much finals involves quality people with big bodies working the ball out from a contest. The amount of outside mids needed is bugger all and overrated. While we have another 4-5 years of Griff and we're developing Howard let's just keep getting the best kids in. If the club thinks Wine is the best kid, i don't think we should be bummed out by the fact he's an inside mid. I've been to several of his games and i can assure you all his efficiency stats are made worse by how many clearing kicks he produces. He's quite able.
