I'm assuming Hawthorn, Carlton, Freo and Essendon have more luck with injuries and that no team can have the luck that West Coast had two years in a row. I rate their youngsters but I feel like last year was what 93 was for Essendon and 08 was for Hawthorn. A dream run with injuries combined with a few star veterans having a last hurrah and impressive youngsters having a breakout year while said veterans take a lot of the opposition pressure.

Gold coast still have too many young and skinny kids but will win more games.

The teams I have picked from 7 -13 could finish anywhere in that range depending on injury luck, outcomes in close games and whether they drop games they shouldn't, or win games they shouldn't.

NAB premiers: North Melbourne (they'll be fired up for a good start to the year)
Premiers: Hawthorn (only team in top 4 with a decent coach (even though he is a nob))
Runners up: Collingwood (best in the league at coming 2nd)
Coleman: Franklin
Brownlow: M. Murphy (I want to say Watson!!)

Tier 1: Serious contenders
1. Collingwood - They are still a relatively young side and won't lose much this year exept davis. Jolly will deteriorate and against quality teams they will struggle in the ruck and therefore will be not as dominant during the season as they were this year.

2. Hawthorn - Their list is starting to age but they still have a couple of really good years left in them and will be serious contenders next year.

Tier 2: Possible Contenders
3. WCE - Many expect eagles to drop this year as apparently it was the senior players that carried them this year. Cox will deteriorate but NN will take his place without loss, Kerr if fit will play more games and Glass should still be good for another year. Improvement from Darling, Gaff, Shuey and NN will see the eagles improve further.

4. Carlton - I struggle to see where the improvement is going to come from to take them to the next level. Yarran will improve further and perhaps gibbs but they will stay level with last year until they find a talented KPF.

5. Geelong - Some may think this harsh but their time will eventually come and i feel that last year was perhaps their last real hurrah as serious contenders, their list has only gotten older and with a few retirements and less output from the likes of Enright, Chapman and Scarlett they will drop back to the pack a bit.

6. Fremantle - This was tough, i wanted them higher but just couldn't given the quality of the teams above them and the fact they are freo (and always dissapoint). They are an absolute wildcard this year if all comes together they could be pushing the top two. If all players come back fit, a few kids come on a bit and their seniors (pav, Sandi, Mcpharlin) can hold their form for another year they could be deadly. A midfield of Sandilands, Fyfe, Mundy, Barlow, Morabito and Hill kicking to pav up forward could do serious damage.

Tier: 3 Fighting for September
7. St Kilda -Their list isn't getting better and i believe they have the least quality youth just about in the comp but they under-performed this year. With hayes back, dal santo, goddard, montagna, riewoldt, fisher and mcevoy they have a good core group of players.

8. Sydney - They are slowly rebuilding somehow whilst maintaining their position up the ladder they are simply too much of a gutsy team to drop out of the eight.

9. Essendon - People overrated them for much of last year and their young talent. They have a good young spine developing but other than watson their midfield will be average next year making the eight a challenge.

10. North - They have one of the most talented young sides going around and will put it together soon and shoot up the ladder. I just don't think that its going to happen yet they will get less out of boomer, petrie and wells this year and their kids are still not quite ready IMO.

Tier 4: Maybe next year
11. Richmond - They will shoot up the ladder soon i just don't know when. Their top end talent will be amazing (cotchin, Martin, Deledio, Riewoldt) but they will not be able to rise much until they get some depth and support and a ruck. They could end up with a stkilda like list (A grader or carbohydrate source)

12.The dogs - They could finish higher they had a dirty year and still have some seriously good players in griffen, Cooney and Boyd.

13. Brisbane - They could Finish higher they have rebuilt much quicker than i expected, Redden, Rockliff and Leunberger will lift them.

14. Melbourne - Loosing scully will hurt. Grimes back and some improvement from trengrove and watts will help.

15. Adelaide - Their list lacks stand out players and they will struggle again this year. Thank god for Thompson otherwise it could get really ugly for them.

Tier 5: The pits give them a few years
16. GC - They will improve a lot this year but im not sure how much it will transfer into games won. Percentage will be much improved.

17. Port - Clubs in disarray more pain ahead still im afraid, they will have kids show some signs next year though to give them hope.

18. GWS - They will get what they deserve for cheating the system and hoarding draft picks instead of trading for players, which will unfortunately just give them pick 1 they will be unstoppable in 5 years time.

Brownlow: M. Murphy (I want to say Watson!!)

If Watson can stay on the park and not have any injury niggles, he should give the Brownlow a fair shake.

Paying at 13 to 1 atm... decent odds for a bloke who stands out in an otherwise ordinary team who'll probably win more games than they lose.

Yes he does enough really nice things that stand out, ie seem to have more time in congestion then anyone else. That said Murphy has started to really shine around the stoppages. Where Murphy will be more eye catching is that he can run away from the stoppage with the ball.

Premiers: Hawthorn
Brownlow Medal: M.Murphy (CARL)
Coleman Medal: L.Franklin (HAW)
Norm Smith Medal: S.Mitchell (HAW)
Rising Star: T.Mitchell (SYD)

1 Hawthorn - Roughead back will be huge. 2008 was unexpected, this is the time they were meant to peak.
2 Collingwood - Tough draw, but still too even and have too deep a list
3 Geelong - Lots of good kids to fill the void, amazing off-field culture
4 Sydney - Always a surprise top 4, 2nd year for horse, good kids, culture of success
5 Carlton - Don't see them continuing to evolve and improve, still too many gaps to be a challenger, lack the evenness and depth of teams above
6 North Melbourne - Lost lost of close ones last year, good draw, need kpp kids to stand up though
7 West Coast - Consolidation year, had a good run last year, Woosha is a gun
8 St Kilda - Can't write off a team with Riewoldt, Dal Santo, Hayes, Fisher. Not much underneath though. A desperately needed new voice, more freedom.

9 Freo - Don't believe Lyon is the saviour everyone thinks he is, should have won a flag at the saints, no guarantees Sandilands will be over his injuries
10 Essendon - Could finish anywhere between 6th and here, will be a good side, iffy draw
11 Richmond - like their list more than Essendon's, North's and Melb's. Vickery to be a star by season's end. Very impressed by Hardwick as a coach
12 Adelaide - Strong club, like st kilda will relish greater freedom under a less draconian coach
13 Melbourne - Year of turmoil cant be forgotten so quickly, new coach, weak culture
14 Brisbane Lions - Very good midfield coming through, voss starting to earn his stripes
15 Gold Coast - Scarily good kids. We forget they had just a couple of months to train before season 2011, will be much better for a second pre-season together. Will have some decent wins
16 Western Bulldogs - Missed their shot, too old, injury prone a-graders, new coach, tough draw
17 Port Adelaide - GC and GWS are over-shadowing how terrible this side is, worst established side since Fitzroy 96
18 Greater Western Sydney - Will beat Port once, less experience than GC this year. There will be blood

4. Carlton - I struggle to see where the improvement is going to come from to take them to the next level. Yarran will improve further and perhaps gibbs but they will stay level with last year until they find a talented KPF.

Kreuzer- First year back from an ACL

Waite- Stifled by a hip injury and left us without a tall target up forward

Curnow- Started on fire then messed up his shoulder (with a little help)

Collins- Played as a high half-forward in his time at Richmond and showed something, underwhelming this year when he got his chance, but injured his shoulder before he could have a second bite at the apple.

Henderson- Started this season in the ressies thanks to an interrupted pre-season, a full year out of him will help our side a lot

Jamison- Really shone when he came into the side having been suspended for a high bump in the NAB Cup (I blame Ricky Henderson's complete lack of awareness). Then tore his meniscus.

Lucas- Struggled with a hamstring injury having shown quite a bit in his first year. Came in for the Saints game and played really well

Russell- Runner-up in the best and fairest 10', injured his hip in the pre-season and tried to play through, in the end he took a rest and played VFL for the remainder, but with a full pre-season will hopefully return to 2010 form.

8 players right there who could improve on 2011 output considerably

9. Essendon - People overrated them for much of last year and their young talent. They have a good young spine developing but other than watson their midfield will be average next year making the eight a challenge.

I think you're wrong there. I think we were underrated most if not all if the year and despite this still made the 8

It's depth that SHOULD see push us up. The form of Hampson, Watson, McCarthy, Kerr, Mitchell, Davies, Bower, White, Curnow, Collins, Mclean (even him), Casboult, O'Keeffe, McInnes and Tuohy should be the catalyst to keep our firsts on their toes. You need depth to improve across the board. In ruck terms, Kreuzer, Warnock and Hampson are still babies. Our 2010 picks have hardly played. 2011 was just Laidler's fourth season and his first at Carlton. Bargain buy and a leader who should continue to improve.

Bunch of no names TG. I think Carlton will push next year but because of what Blue and Silver posted. Your better players having injury free seasons is the key imo, not random VFL and fringe players.

Carlton are at that stage where they are ready to have a premiership tilt. A lot of premiership teams (sketchy memory) play a few season of losing finals, reaching SF's etc, which Carlton have now done. So I think they are ready for PF at worst season next year. We all know about their midfield but if they can get the trio of Jamison, Waite and Kreuzer match fit for the majority of the year, that will make a huge difference.

There is some improvement in these players but i don't see Waite being a good enough KPF to carry your forward line.

3 players kicked 50 goals. Doesn't really need to be carried...

Waite sucks in a tall defender, which helps Walker in the air, and gives him more breathing room. The forward line looks pretty damn good IMO, kicked a lot of goals

Im guessing that Carlton supporters see Waite as more of a Role player, just to give a target up forward ?

100%.....I am hoping for a great season...fingers crossed cos it looks promising.

West coast looks like a real chance as well.....might even put a $50 on them....along with $200 on the blues...wish me luck
