With all due respect to some of the St Kilda youngsters, but are they really at a stage where they should be preferred over two of Sandy's strongest and best ?

It's an interesting one.

Irving seems to prefer an on-ball role, but with Cockie, Cook and Armitage running through there it is difficult to see the spot.

Seb Ross has warranted a midfield gig too.

Then you throw Polo into the mix (Ray too, although he didn't seem to play in the middle).

Lourey's kicking for goal wasn't good at all in the last practice match, and he has the same technical fault that he had last year. Whilst he's a quality mark in a pack situation, all the good work is undone with a missed shot from 30m directly in front.

Wilkes was good last week (despite missing a few), Dunell had around 10 marks, Siposs is quality, and Markworth was dropped to the reserves. Shenton is probably the one who is a little lucky, but he kicked goals in the pre-season (and it's a tough call to play for the Saints and get dropped to the ressies not long after).

Cockie spreads wings by flying east

SANDRINGHAM recruit and former West Coast midfielder Adam Cockie is barely known by those in the east but he is already changing that.

The 22-year-old appears ready to shrug off his injury-prone tag for another shot at the AFL ranks after a two-year stint at the Eagles.

He is one of the reasons why the Zebras are expected to be a big improver this season given his tenacity and power as an inside midfielder.

After an impressive fourth season with Subiaco last year, Cockie attracted the interest of Collingwood in the lead-up to last year's AFL draft. He missed out and followed Claremont premiership coach - now Saints development coach - Simon McPhee to Sandringham.

He knew he had to leave a two-team state to give himself the best chance of resurrecting his career.

"That's why I made the change because there's more AFL clubs [in Victoria] and more chance to be seen. You get recruiters going over to WA but you've always got AFL teams here and if they're not playing AFL you've got coaches watching you as well," Cockie said. "It keeps the AFL dream still alive, you've got to make changes to get to your goal again."

St Kilda coach Scott Watters coached Cockie for two seasons at Subiaco, including the 2008 WAFL flag. Watters wanted to get him into the VFL system, at least to the Saints feeder team, to show his true potential on the smaller VFL grounds.

Interesting comment re Lourey..I think he tends to kick the ball too high if that makes sense..and if there is a breeze, then the ball moves one way or the other...other players can kick with a lower trajectory and the ball appears to go more in a straight line...can't fault other parts of his game...his work rate has really increased from what I've seen in all the practice matches and his contested marking is pretty good...

Yea Siposs's Dad already let cat out bag that he was playing in VFL this week. Didnt expect Wilkes to play aswell though, thought we'd take 2 emergencies over just in case.

Wilkes only 50/50 I think...depends on what's happening in Adelaide

Michael Sikora, Jack Beech & Jackson Coleman been selected in VFL Academy

The first intake for the 2012 AFL Victoria VFL Academy has been announced today. The VFL Academy has been established to enhance the talent pool existing in the Peter Jackson VFL competition. The Academy will provide a platform to observe and monitor a select group of players exposed to elements of the AFL Victoria Academy structure, philosophy and resources.

No question he is AFL standard - I'd have him in our team for round 1 - but injuries have ruined good talents before (he's had a few problems in the past?). If he runs out the season like he's started it, I'd be amazed if he doesn't get picked up. Time will tell though.
