Draft Review 2013 - Redo the 2013 AFL draft

No arguments here mate. He's 10th in the AFL for tackles per game with 6.96. Cripps is no slouch either though at 30th with 5.86.

He's a more rounded player than Cripps, but I rate Cripps higher. As a neutral looking at that draft, I'd take Cripps over him (assuming Bont had been snaffled up at 1). If both Bont and Cripps were taken, I'd take Merrett next.
It's not just the tackles alone, but the constant harassment and corralling of opposition players that also leads to turnovers.

Cripps is the best stoppage player in the league right now, only competition is when Fyfe comes back. Still doesn't change the fact that he's a poor kick and can be a liability in uncontested situations. And that's why Merrett is talked up as being in AA contention and Cripps isn't. If Cripps could straighten up is kicking then he'd be ahead of Merrett, but until then it seems we'll agree to disagree.

I gave up on AA years ago. But agreed. Lets revisit this in a few years.

No doubt, Blokes a genuine gun. But reckon the gap at the start of the year between Cripps and Bont to Merrett has closed.

It could be argued that Bont has opened up the gap himself. Merrett chasing down Cripps though

I would have thought if you lined up 18 AFL List Managers tomorrow and asked them to put Bont, Cripps and Merrett in order, you would get 18 identical answers.

Bont
Cripps
Merrett.

All fantastic young players though. Merrett is a beauty and has developed really well to even be in the convo with the 2 big bull Generals. Will Brodie will be the perfect compliment to Merrett and Parish i'd reckon.

Disagree.

Depends on if all of those 18 need an inside bull, or if they need a more rounded player with more strings in their bow.

I'm a massive fan of Merrett but I agree. Even though Merrett is in the conversation performance/ability wise the physical tools of Bontempelli and Cripps would see them taken higher in a redraft imo.

How many teams don't need an inside bull? I do agree that Cripps wouldn't have the colossal inside numbers at other clubs as he'd have to play a more team role and wouldn't be the go to guy at stoppages every contest.

All need them, but some may need a more rounded player as a priority.

Like saying who doesn't need a good ruck. All teams do, but some have greater needs.

I was talking about the Merret part. You love to throw as much mud at Cripps as possible. A cynical man would think youre envious

Haven't seen much of Merrett?

it just seems you are unbelievably biased and take everything that doesn't fit your Cripps narrative as some sort of attack.

I used to be the same when I was young and before I got a better grasp on the game. Don't worry, it will come

Might try and take some of the cheer leading that we're each doing for our respective players and look at the stats so far for the year.

Some of my observations:
  • Cripps is a contested beast, Zach and Bont aren't slouches by any means in the area but Cripps is getting it done (Clearances and Contested Possessions).
  • As a result Cripps handball/kick ratio is greater then 2:1 which is very high - doesn't seem to find cheap possessions easily.
  • Merrett looks like he is running harder/getting more on the outside, reflected in his uncontested possessions, marks and large kick count.
  • Merrett has an insane average stat line (29 Disposals, 7 Tackles, 5 Marks, 5 i50's)
  • Bont's ability to impact the scoreboard is huge, near top i50s per game as well as averaging a goal.
  • Despite their different play styles all are similarly efficient running around ~70%

It's clear that all three are playing differently - Cripps is inside bliss, Zach is in/out and Bont is inside/getting time forward to impact the scoreboard.

Based on the stats alone (the only player I've watched every game of his Merrett so do not have a holistic view of Bont/Cripps):
Statistically Bonts/Merrett have had comparable seasons and are probably a touch ahead of Cripps.

If people were re-drafting these three players today I think Merrett would still land #3 behind Bont #1 and Cripps #2.
This is largely due to the physical attributes of Cripps/Bont. Recruiters are obviously looking for the taller midfielders and being over 10cm shorter then these two hurts Merrett a lot.

Therefore:

This season rankings:
  1. Tied: Bont / Merrett
  2. Cripps
Re-draft:
  1. Bont
  2. Cripps
  3. Merrett

Haha, pump up your own tires more. Youre nothing but a troll

There is nothing between Cripps and Merrett,
Carlton supporters will choose Cripps
Essendon supporters will choose Merrett

Both are amazing young players, it could be argued either way which of these are the 2nd best in the draft, but right now it is bloody even.
Both so young and so good.

Tell yourself that if it makes you feel better. My opinion in this thread certainly isn't Robinson Crusoe

Check out Cripps' last quarter against West Coast yesterday...

14 disposals, 8 contested, 8 clearances, and a goal.

I'm a huge Merret fan, love him, but although he gets a lot of the ball and is quality with it. He doesn't have the same ability to take control of a game like Cripps does.

Merrett is an amazing pick at 30 but Cripps is at another level. Not sure pointing at stats tells the whole story. Cripps and Bonts look like the Hird and Voss of the next generation.

At least we've got the next Buckley then?

As an actual neutral supporter, I must say that I think Cripps is the better player compared to Merrett. Both are incredible, neither as good as the Bont, but watching Cripps in that last quarter, he's just an exceptional player around the contest. His brute strength, ability to get his arms free, and his constant ability to find a teammate in space while under immense pressure is elite. Would be stoked to have either though.

Also Sheed hasn't played this year due to injury but criminally underrated. Was fantastic last year and came top 3 in the rising star last year. Surely top 10.
