Someone's going to get it so our percentage would be more like 5%.

Once you factor in that they want experienced midfielders, the depth of our midfield and the fact that they are interested in at least two of our contracted midfielders I'd say our percentage goes up.
That someone is 80% likely to be Melbourne (ie no trade). The pick is on the table for the right price, but that price is an A grade player like Sloane (who is most definitely not an option as far as the AFC are concerned). Multiple B grade players won't get it done no matter how many we throw in.

No club would trade a player of Sloane's ilk for pick 2 straight up. If player of Sloane's ilk was involved, it would also include Melbourne's 2nd round draft pick! Sloane is worth more than pick 2 alone!

It's counter intuitive to say that Melbourne want players for a quick improvement but then they expect to have a top 2 pick again next year.

I agree that they want to improve quickly but I doubt they're expecting to be bottom 2 if they make these trades.

I see what your saying but a vast improvement by melbourne is to just be competitive and not get pumped every week. A few decent players will do that. They are coming from miles behind. They are still a lock for bottom 2 tho imo

If they keep pick 2 and develop their player (lol) they are a chance to have another season like this year. Massive blowouts. That would be disasterous

Let's assume that Melbourne is genuinely putting pick 2 up for auction. What can they realistically expect?

There is about a 50% chance that the number 2 pick will turn into an elite midfielder based on the last 10 drafts. He will almost certainly be an above average AFL player. Clubs are very unlikely to trade away pick 2 if he is a potential gun forward (Patton, Boyd etc) because they are very hard to find. Everyone remembers the clubs that didn't pick up Buddy.

Why would anyone trade an elite midfielder under 25 years of age for pick 2? Why would a club swap a dangerfield or sloane in order to wait 4-5 years to have someone of comparable value? .Melbourne can either get an older elite midfielder (e.g. Swan, NDS if they were willing to do the hard yards for the extra $$$$)) for pick 2 or will have to settle for someone who is younger but just below that level. Perhaps someone in their mid 20's who is just below the elite level. Not an all australian but perhaps someone who couuld make the all australian squad.

Do we have anyone like that:rolleyes:? If the player had won a club B&F and was at the top of his game then we could get the deal done. But would we want to do the deal?

I hope you're talking about dougie. Get it done.

That was mentioned by a few on the Melbourne board. The club is nearly broke being propped up by the AFL, if they can't at least be competitive next year with Roos at the helm then sponsors are going to start to jump. The thing is they have some good players who have been developed hopelessly over the past few seasons. They need some experienced mids to help the young up and comers, the problem was they cut the wrong players a couple of years ago and now are paying for their ineptitude. Still think they might pull the trigger on 2.

I would not trade Douglas for pick #2. He's too important to our midfield to waste by trading for a pick to be used on a kid who may or may not be any good, and may or may not have any impact next year. Big Footy overvalues draft picks.

Our proven midfield consists of Dangerfield, Sloane, Douglas, a mercurial Vince, and an aging but still dangerous Thompson. Then we have Wright, who has had one good season followed by one bad one. That's all.

Crouch was good, but could have a case of second year blues. None of Smith, Grigg, Lyons, Kerridge or Riley are proven AFL midfielders. Petrenko, Martin, Mackay and Jaensch have already proven not to be.

Even for a Norwood player and the nephew of a SANFL and Norwood legend? I would roll the dice.

I totally agree with this. At the moment, Douglas is more important and plus i have a crazy idea with Aish.

This is a kid that values tradition and Aish is a big SANFL name, now odds are he is going to Victoria so lets say we leave 3-450k free from our salary cap, let Aish know we want him to play for us and we are willing to make you pretty well paid, He's now playing the homesick card and we get him for a second rounder..

I can't remember the last time i saw a team do that...

The part about being the nephew of a Norwood legend is totally and utterly irrelevant.

Being a member of the Norwood flag team is relevant, but I still fail to see how that player is guaranteed to make a better contribution to the side ever than Richard Douglas, let alone over the next 3 years.

hahah wow... someone on the melbourne board was putting forward lyons, vince, mckay and henderson for pick 20 and their compo for sylvia. Whats next, danger, sloane and crouch for watts and neil craig?

You talk about and make a compassion between Sam Mitchell and Jarod Lyons - well, if you knew anything about football, Sam Mitchell was rookie listed by the Hawks and didn't get a game until his disposal was cleaned up. His kicking was shizzen and he improved it. Sounds very familar, doesn't it but you have already written Lyons off as if he can not .

No it wasn't!

No argument there. However that's the calibre of player they're looking for if #2 is to go on the table. Not a bunch of B grade players combined.
