If we are talking needs, I think the need for run and carry and smart decision makers all over the ground trumps our need for key position players right at this moment.

On that basis I want almost* best available at every pick.

* Will pass on players with who dont have any outside game at all.

Are Smiths disposal issues technical or just more composure/decision making? Other than that I love what he brings and we'd absolutely love watching him play, maybe he could settle as a defensive forward where his limitations aren't as exposed.
I think that technically he is actually a pretty good kick. The thing is that he is such an intense kid and sometimes he kicks the ball like the way he tackles. He'll just smack it 60m to no one when he could have spotted up a better option. However, there are times where when he does decide to go for the smart option, he can execute very well. I reckon with some coaching to bring more finesse to his play style, he could definitely fix it up.

I reckon R Mack is definitely off to Carlton at 28 if he is still available and we don't take him.

I think he could go at their pick 19, they need a genuine FF more than just about anyone. Plus there is a connection at that club with his Dad.

The problem with Reece is twofold: 1) he doesn't have runs on the board apart from beating up on smaller/weaker opponents; and 2) he doesn't show his athleticism on the football field. I liken him a bit to an alternative sport talent: he has the physical tools but you need to teach him how to use them on the football field, which isn't always easy. I've ebbed and flowed on where he sits but I think it's outside the top 30 now; he just hasn't shown enough on the field. Somebody who thinks they can get him utilising his athleticism on the field will take a punt though - and I agree he could be very, very, very good.

I was listening to the champion data guys on SEN earlier today. McKenzie was the second best forward according to their numbers only fraction behind McCartin. They claim, that as a rule, KP forwards who's pre AFL numbers are high that it usually translates into the AFL. They said it was the case with Franklin, Roughead, Hawkins and Cloke. The footage I have seen of him I thought was more impressive than McCartin. I think he could be a very good pick up, but of course we also need some classy mids.

Yeah that's sort of the vibe I was getting about him, just always going at 110% and like you said just smashing it long. Which is probably a good thing as long as he's technically sound he should be able to improve quite a bit in an AFL environment.

What did he get in the beep test again? 11? Pretty bloody poor result so hopefully there's an underlying reason for that. Considering our emphasis on character an attitude I would be surprised if we drafted a guy whose not even able to get his fitness to an acceptable standard so I'd say there would be other reasons.

Would be happy enough with him in the 40s, would bring a bit of speed and aggression to the team and would definitely be exciting to watch.

Taken from AFL website:-
There's a question on Smith's fitness, which was underlined by his testing at the combine.

He managed just an 11.12 beep test and ran 12:12 in the three-kilometre time trial, which obviously will need to lift significantly to excel at the next level. His kicking can at times be a little untidy, and his disposal efficiency was 62 per cent at the under-18 championships.

And like most prospects here's a puff piece from The Age:-

I dunno, a lot of marks against him already...still...something about him. Aggression. Playing on the edge. You can't teach that.

Duggan being interviewed now. Face lit up when the Dogs were mentioned to him; absolutely loves us. Says it would be a "dream come true" if he came to us and he was a bit shattered when we traded away our first pick. Also mentioned that Murphy took him under his wing when he trained here earlier in the year.

Really sucks that he won't make it to us this year. Reckon we go hard a few years down the line to trade him in.

Fair enough - I don't get the combine results but I remember reading somewhere that he broke the record.

I have the results... He wasn't even close, his V02 score result was at the bottom end of the combine. I do wonder if we told him to hold back though.

EDIT: Happy to share them if you want to take a look.

Nah it's all good, I've obviously got my info mixed up somewhere along the track. :p Thanks, though.
