So, Ablett signed his GC deal in July the previous year, Buddy opened conversations after the GF but contracts were discussed July-ish(?)

Likely the Club are pretty advanced in talks with the Target by now.

Our forward line looks to be fairly well sorted for the short to medium term, so probably takes out a Cameron type, especially considering he's a million dollar player if you wanted to poach him.

Our midfield is interesting, we are ageing and need a refresh, but we obviously have some talent emerging, will we wait and develop or pull the trigger on a Fyfe, Cotchin, Danger, again, close to a million there to get them out.

This brings us to the backline.
Our backline is relatively well set (Stratts, Schoe, Heatherly,Birchall, Gibbo) but probably our weakest line in the team. You'd think we could get Frawley for 650-700k, 25y.o. and AA. UFA also so no need to worry about Melbourne matching anything.

Therefore, Frawley is probably our best option. But the club always surprises me, and always does a great job.
I'd be absolutely astounded if we do not have someone(maybe a couple of elite mids, not just one) in our sights for the middle.

We are completely aware that we've had the services of two particularly great players to call on in Mitchell and Hodge(Evans said as much at a function I attended a couple of years ago), and I just can't see us sitting on our list and hoping that we'll be able to get by with Anderson, Woodward, Hallahan and Hill(amongst others) as their replacements.

And that's not even taking Burgoyne into consideration, who only has a couple of years left also.

I choose to believe that we'll be aware that we need to replace elite players with elite players if we want to combat the other sides at the top.

That's why the Cotchin rumour is intriguing to me.

Is Cotchin anywhere near being a free agent? Otherwise what would it take to get it done? Isaac Smith? Richmond lack outside run.

Good question. It will be tough to move him but at the end of the day you got to pay to get elite players on your list from other clubs (unless you are Sydney). I actually struggle to think what Richmond would want given what we could offer. Someone young and good no doubt. If we snagged Frawley and Spangher gets his body right we might be prepared to trade Shoey and our first rounder. I don't think we can afford to give up smith. He is incredibly important to our future premiership aspirations.

I prefer not to get bogged down in thinking about how a trade could get done.

Graeme Wright has a history of getting his man.

I'd be staggered if we weren't chasing a KPD after the injuries to 30+ year olds Lake and Gibbo
Back-up KPP Spangher is injury prone but def worth keeping, but he has to start stringing games together
Heatherly and Brand are prospects, but miles off senior AFL week after week at the moment, while Cheney and Litherland cannot play on power forwards

Frawley the obvious choice, but maybe there is someone else we could get from left field?

This area must be attended to if we are to be challenging again next year and beyond

I agree run is going to be crucial and Smith is a keeper. Just tossing up a name they will most likely inquire about. Cotchin would be great get if the rumour is true. However, he is not a Gunston/Hale/Gibbo 'left field' type of target though, were a few draft picks are exchanged and the player changes clubs.

Solid points there regarding our midfield.

But i suggest our back line is of more immediate problem, with Lake coming close to the end and the lack of younger KPP players demanding a spot in the backline. Our mids don't have a dominant player retiring this year (sorry Sewelly) and we have a couple of kids who could fill a void for a season or two before we land the big mid fish, but our backline has been left wanting for a while, and if Lake goes this year, then Frawley is more immediate need than, a Fyfe .

Kieren Harper does fit into the list management structure.
Is coming off an interrupted preseason with an ankle injury but now has a couple of games under his belt at the lower level so it will be interesting to see where he fits into the Roos side when and if given the chance but he'd most certainly be worth a look.
Not sure of his inside ball winning ability but was highly rated in his draft year as a speedy goal kicking half forward with quality foot skills and running ability (as witnessed in the highlights package).

Missed pretty much all of season 2013 for injury and form issues for memory.

Is contracted until the end of 2015 but I'd take another look as I think there's a place for him in our best 22.
Its a highlights package, however his skill level is very impressive.
Definitely worth pursuing him again.

Never ceases to amaze me how certain posters spend hours on this board telling all and sundry how useless some of our players are, Suckling, Shoenmakers etc. I'm friggin over it, seriously you know who you are and you can all go and get fu....ed as far as I'm concerned.

Can the mods create a Suckling thread?

i was interested in reading about off-field targets

I Wasn't aware that Suckling was an off season-target????....Sumthin bout ATQ & being somewhere in the ball park of the thread topic?o_O

Suckling discussion now has it's own thread, and the posts have been moved. There will be no Suckling discussion here.

Sorry to everyone who's had to trawl through this for the entire day, I know it shat me to tears as well.

Cotchin? I can't see him leaving, not as captain of his club. Would be absolutely shocked..

After tonites game, i think our number 1 target should be tippett. tippett made buddy look a million dollars tonite. can you imagine a forward line of tippet, gunston, roughie, rioli, breust and forward press of poppie....this will mean we negate the swans as well.....hopefully we throw the kitchen sink at him....

Would anyone here be interested in seeing Tom Mitchell from Sydney make his way to us? Ticks a fair few boxes we'd want for a midfielder (inside/outside/goal kicker)

If nothing else, it'd give us a chance to take a F/S away from Sydney.

They won't make that mistake

They won't make that mistake

Might not be their call. Currently not getting played in the seniors, doing quite well in the ressies, though take that with a pinch of salt given it's the NEAFL. With the right deal, it could be done. Swans would have to be looking at easing the salary cap now wouldn't they?

Wouldn't they...?

Oh right... COLA.

It was the Sydney midfield again that won them the game. The amount of ball Tippet and Buddy were supplied they should've kicked 8 each.

We'd be better off targeting one of their midfielders.

I would take Tom Mitchell in a heartbeat he is a seriously good young player and I think will go onto great things. He didn't seem to have any issue adjusting to AFL level in his first year, and am not entirely unsure why he is languishing in the seconds presently... hell he recently got a 64 touch 4 goal haul in the seconds which is obscene!
