Toast 2014 National Draft, pick #31 - welcome to Hawthorn Daniel Howe

How often does a kid that could only make it on a HBF at TAC level transition into an AFL level mid?

How often do you see defender in a draft profile and assume that is where he is only capable of playing?

In any case even if he had only played defence he has the attributes to be developed into a midfielder, Fyfe was a half forward when he was drafted.

Apparently Miller and Maynard would have been taken ahead of Howe if they were there but he is rated highly by Wright.

He played midfield in the second half of the year at TAC level.

To answer your question, well there are plenty of good players that play u18 level at half back. In the last year there's been Luke McDonald, Kolodjashnij, Vlastuin and Scharenberg (top 10 pick who was injured all year) who played predominantly at half back. Besides Scharenberg who was injured all season the others cemented their spot in their respective teams' best 22. I'm sure there are more examples if I looked back further.

Yep but as I stated, most of those guys still play off half back now.

My point was more about the over-excitement that we've just picked up Mundy/Fyfe.

Surely he starts as a half forward or half back at BH, shows proficiency in one of those areas and gets a game at Hawthorn in 2016 or 2017 there?

At least with Litherland and Howe we potentially have our HBFers stitched up for the next ten years.

I also like the way we seem to have continued recruiting kids that can kick, but with Howe, Jedi and Scicily, we've also gone after kids that are really good marks for their size.

In many ways modern midfielders are very similar to HBF in that they stream off the HBF when the ball is turned over. What impresses with Howe is that he is very good at contested footy. He showed this late in the season and his stats across the whole season (even when he was playing HBF) demonstrate that he wins his own ball. This is very different to a typical HBF who wins ball on the outside.

This is the reason we have drafted him, he is good in a contested situation, a strong tackler, a good size, good kick and a strong mark, all the attributes you need to become a big bodied inside midfielder.

I don't think anyone is suggesting we have drafted the next Mundy or Fyfe but suggesting we have drafted a player in that mold, whether or not he makes it is an entirely different proposition.

Very happy with this selection, apparently of the players we had potentially landing at our pick he was 3rd in line behind Miller and Maynard, I was particularly keen on Maynard but would much prefer Howe to Miller was surplus to needs in my opinion.

Thinking about it however Howe may very well have more scope than Maynard with his size and marking ability.

I hear you.

Out of our recruits I think O'Rourke is most likely to be the Mundy/Fyfe type.

Listening to Wrighty, it sounds like Howe will start across half back and move into the midfield in a few years, like Langford for example. I think we've drafted Howe to play a multitude of roles but primarily to become a big bodied midfielder. And I think he has all the tools to do so but that's just based on the highlights available.

I think Litherland will always be that half back/3rd tall defender type like a Stratton.

Sicily's really interesting. He could also become a tall midfielder once he adds size but I think he's got great potential to be a Gunston-type third forward.

Very solid marking ability and his height suggests he will be a Stratton type player.

Second in the kicking test is also exactly what our recruiters want. I shall be watching his development with keen interest.

Welcome to Hawthorn Daniel!

Is a exceptional player , has elite foot skills and great marking skills, is a class act who glides though traffic and has great awareness in traffic . Won Xavier colleges B&f in 2013 . You got a good one .
Mate am i right in saying he's Lachlan's little bro ?

A couple of posters have mentioned this. How do you know? Or are you all just guessing?

Interesting fact , Howe is continually being ref to as top age player and the likes of Brayshaw and Laverde bottom age ..
DOB ...Howe played and still is only 18 , not 19 like many publication are stating .
Howe 12/95
Breyshaw 1/96
Laverde 4/96
Edt for Tyler ...

Liked what I saw in terms of kicking and contested marking ability. Hopefully he has a couple of solid years development at Box Hill where he gets opportunities to play a variety of roles and that he is ready to play senior footy in the next year or two.

Welcome Daniel!

The more I learn about Howe, the more I like. He seems like a good kid who shouldn't be too troubled with the AFL spotlight. Has a nice size about him for a mid, is an excellent kick and has safe hands, including overhead marking. Hawthorn is the best club to really develop these attributes while improving his overall footy skills. He could really be a surprise packet in a year or two if he takes his chances.

That is a relief and gives me a lot more confidence based on what he's achieved. Wonder why so many are getting it wrong, I've read so widely that he is older that I presumed that it was right. Good reminder not to accept what you read.....except on the ABC of course :)

So, he will turn 9 on the 4th of December?

Happy 9th Birthday Daniel :)
