People are getting too caught up in the Bontempelli hype too, particular punters, if those odds are genuine. He's had three good games, and five average-to-poor ones. Basically having half a season where you did nothing of note is too much of a head start to give the other contenders IMO, and shouldn't win him the award.

Agree that Bonts has been pumped up a bit too much however his "five average to poor ones" where his first 5, His last 3 were his rising star nomination, arguably his best game 24 disposals and a goal from the centre square against port and his matchwinner antics just gone. So i think this reflects a strong last push towards top 5 vote chance. But my money remains on Aish.

Impeys been great but I think Aish has been the best, followed by Langdon and then Impey.
Jobs I can remember off the top of my head:

Kept Eddie betts to 1 goal (other three were kicked when he was on the bench.
Kept Ballantyne to 0 goals
Jetta (Syd) to 1 goal
Kennedy Harris to 0 goal
Puopolo to 0 goals
Josh Hill to 0 goals
Garlett to 1 goal

against
Eddie betts kicked three on him in the first sowdown
L.Thomas I think kicked three on him as well

Isn't Puopolo more of a defensive forward though? If it had been Bruest sure but this one doesn't seem quite as impressive.

Any way you slice it, he still spent the first half of the season doing little to nothing of note. Puts him too far back behind the pack IMO, no matter how well he finishes.

But how Salem is up there doesn't make any sense to me

This.

He's had one good game, has gotten more than eight disposals just once, and one "right place, right time" highlight elsewhere. I know he's been used as the sub a bit (coming on and off, averaging just 53% gametime on the season), but Salem has done nowhere near enough this year to be in contention.

In fairness though O'Meara had one of the best ever first seasons for some one his age. And Wines and Crouch were very impressive too. I'd say those guys were the exceptions rather than the rule.

2 of the 3 spent the previous season training with the AFL clubs via mini draft..

Langdon or Aish for me.

The point was that afaik, there is no actual criteria for the award.

Unless you are Kevin Bartlett or Mark Ricciuto.

In those cases, the criteria are that you overlook every shred of evidence and do all you can to get the award to the player who plays for your club.

Salem will be a gem, but wouldn't be anywhere near it in terms of consistent output this year.

Always prefer to see these awards go to first year players- Aish, Dunstan and Impey are my picks.
