R1
Gibson - Schoenmakers - Duryea
Birchall - Stratton - Hodge
Smith - Lewis - Hill
Gunston - Hale - Burgoyne
Puopolo - Roughead - Breust
McEvoy - Lewis - Hallahan
Sewell - Anderson - Shiels - Grimely

How is old Grimely?

I'll give it a crack:

Hooker - Carlisle - Baguley
Dempsey - Hurley - Hibberd
Stanton - Watson - Goddard
Zaharakis - Fletcher - Chapman
Bellchambers - Daniher - Winderlich
Ryder - Heppell - Hocking
Melksham - Myers - Colyer - Merrett (sub)

With Melksham's suspension one of Kavanagh/Howlett/Dalgleish/O'Brien will be the sub and Merrett will be in the 21. I put Fletch forward because Carlisle/Hurley/Hooker is the 3 man combo for our future and need to gel, and we need a CHF so Fletch might as well play forward. He's not a best 22 defender anymore IMO

Just because they're a top eight chance I'll do Gold Coast:
B: J. Harbrow, R. Thompson, T. McKenzie
HB: D. Swallow, S. Day, G. Broughton
C: H. Bennell, G. Ablett, J. Martin
HF: M. Shaw, S. May, B. Matera
F: C. Brown, C. Dixon, Z. Smith
R: T. Nicholls, D. Prestia, J. O'Meara
I/C: A. Hall, M. Rischitelli, L. Russell, J. Lonergan

That would easily be the best back line in the league. The forward line looks decent as well, assuming Joe learns to kick straight, though I wouldn't count on them playing Fletch at CHF - but I agree that he's not best 22 unless he somehow improves from last season. He just looked lazy. We should definitely be aiming for a prelim with that line up.

No way, Sydney's of:

Johnson - Grundy - Smith
Shaw - Teddy - Malceski

and Freo's of:

Duffield - Dawson - Spurr
Johnson - McPharlin - Ibbotson

are both comfortably better

In: Thomas, Docherty

Round 1.
B: Kade Simpson, Michael Jamison, Andrew McInnes
HB: Sam Docherty, Matthew Watson, Zach Tuohy
C: Andrew Walker, Brock McLean, Dale Thomas
HF: Bryce Gibbs, Lachie Henderson, Troy Menzel
F: Matthew Kreuzer, Jarrad Waite, Jeff Garlett
Foll: Rob Warnock, Chris Judd, Marc Murphy
I/C: Ed Curnow, Andrew Carrazzo, Chris Yarran, Mitch Robinson

This would be my ideal Carlton starting 22 for Rd 1 2014. :thumbsu:

Essendon v Sydney

Hurley v Grundy
Carlisle v Richards
Hooker v Johnson, though Johnson is underrated
I rate Hibberd higher than Malceski but I'll call that a tie, because it's close
Baguley and Smith also a tie
Dempsey v Shaw

Essendon v Fremantle
Hurley v Dawson

Carlisle v McPharlin
Hooker v Johnson
Hibberd v Ibbotson
Dempsey and Duffield a tie, though I'd pick Dempsey because he's quicker
I've never noticed Spurr so can't really make a judgement on him

Next year Hurley and Carlisle could well be the two best key defenders in the comp and I think Hibberd is already the best rebounding defender. Still stand by the claim that Essendon would have the best defence if it played those players down there.

Freo and Sydney have much better midfields, though.

B: J Rivers, T Lonergan, C Guthrie
HB: A Mackie, H Taylor, C Enright
C: M Duncan, J Caddy, A Christensen
HF: M Stokes, N Vardy, S Motlop
F: J Bartel, T Hawkins, S Kersten
R: D Simpson, S Johnson, J Selwood
I: M Blicavs, J Kelly, G Horlin-Smith, J Murdoch
E: T Varcoe, H McIntosh, T Hunt, B Smedts, J Thurlow (3 of these)
With hope that Menzel will get back at some stage :(

I worry about our aging defenders, I think by 22 we see Murdoch and Thurlow starting, Mackie on interchange, Lonergan probably injured. Maybe see Hamling on the emergency list at some point.

Not sure about Kersten either, I think Josh Walker is more likely starting.

You're showing your bias mate. No way known is Baggers as good as Smith and Carlisle as good as Teddy. 3rd? Maybe. We'd be on par with Hawthorn and Geelong, probably slightly ahead of Hawthorn due to their only player who can take monsters is 32 and going to retire soon.

There's little difference between Smith and Baguley - they both perform a role that can't really be remarkable. The best they can do, such is their role, is deliver a sound performance in which the small forward has minimal impact, and each succeeds in this. Let's look at their stats:
Baguley
Rebound 50s: 2.52
Disposal efficiency: 79.5%
Tackles: 2.81
Disposals: 16
Marks: 5.29
One percenters: 3.1

Smith
Rebound 50s: 1.9
Disposal efficiency: 78.4%
Tackles: 3.1
Disposals: 13.9
Marks: 3
One percenters: 3.2

Smith has been around longer and played in a good grand final and has therefore earned a better reputation, but he's really not much better, if at all, than Baguley

I'll concede that one could go either way, but Carlisle is certainly better than Richards. Don't you remember how good he was before he injured his back? Richards is good but overrated. He's maybe a better spoiler but Carlisle destroys him in terms of marks and disposal efficiency. Carlisle's also much more capable of clutch, game saving moments - he's more than just a role player as most defenders are. Also worth noting Carlisle is getting closer to his prime while Richards is moving away from it.

You don't use stats for small, lockdown defenders, unless it's goals conceded. Smith beats every kind of small or medium forward. Baguley still struggles with leading forwards like LeCras and Gia, but is excellent against players like Garlett and Ballantyne. Smith beats all of them.

Carlisle has fantastic potential. He's going to be a great defender. He's like Harry Taylor, but with one real flaw in his game as a defender; leading forwards. People who come at the ball rather than stand one-out in a contest. Teddy can beat all the types of key forwards, whether it be Franklin (not that he needs to anymore), Cloke, Petrie or any of them.

So with trades & signings starting to flow I thought it would be interesting to take a look at how some Round 1 teams might start to look? Also, how do you see your best 22 looking should everyone make it through the season injury free?

Obviously anything can happen between now and then (FA, Drafts & Pre Season injuries, *Buddy to do a knee in Ireland... etc)

Injury Implications...?
* R. Schoenmakers (Knee - Rd 1?)
% M. Suckling (Knee - Rd 1?)
# B. Whitecross (Knee - Rd 12-15?)

TO RETIRE AFTER 2014

Surely --> Sewell, Burgoyne, Hale

Positions are interesting - case for many changes, ins, outs etc - not sure of the makeup of the VFL side either. Regardless of the result - I am looking forward to another exciting year for Hawthorn!! #back2back
