Look at Hawthorn's midfield. Hodge, Lewis, Mitchell and Burgoyne all spend large periods of time at half back where they use their skills and vision to create.

Geelong's midfield boasted guys like Ablett, Bartel, Chapman, SJ and Corey who could play other roles to a very high standard.
Who do we have that spends time across half back and also in the centre square?

No one.

The only players we have that swap between half back and wing is Smith, Hendo and Dmack. And generally it's only done when one of them isn't working out.

So the theory that our half backs rarely a full game at half back is not correct.

People need to start thinking though, why would you change up Smith's position after he became an AA half back just because they had the plan to groom him into a midfielder after 3 years in the system.

Sure his desire is to play more midfield minutes, yet as a coach and his team mates, I'd be like, "mate, this half back role is working for us and it's one of the main reasons as to why we've been a more improving side over the last 2 years why change structure now"?

Brodie is still how old? I'm sure in 2-3 years time when he is at his peak at 25-26 he'll be dominating the midfield for us.
But for now, leave the structure (apart from the new guys) to as it is as we know it works

I have debated this in my own mind actually. As we know Smith played on-ball in his junior years (under 18 championships) and he was good. He won clearances and at times burst from stoppages.

But I've also wondered whether the congestion would reduce his effectiveness. We know he is a great run'n'carry player and has a great penetrating kick. I'm not sure I necessarily want to see him in congestion just throwing the ball on his boot without the adequate time and space to use his leg and break the lines.

Do we really want to stifle his main weapons?

I can settle for short bursts in the midfield.
Imagine smith getting the ball in the guts and then quick kick 60m.. not the 30 that danger would kick. the small forwards would be salivating ... all 3 of them... we've added lots of pace in the trading period.. im confident tge ithers can do the job on the outside.

Just because something works well, doesn't mean it can't work better if you change your approach. I would like to think the Adelaide Crows critically analyse player roles on a regular basis.

Another point to make on players being AA in one role and being moved into another, perhaps a change in role might impact the individual performance of the player in a negative way, but it could improve the overall team performance. Every season there are teams who have players that perform well individually, even a number of players that perform well individually, but this does not translate to overall team success.

Finally sometimes you have players who ball hog, preventing other players from getting into the game, maybe other players who can kick better or make bettter decisions going forward, and sometimes getting rid of these, flashy, glory hogging FIGJAMs creates a breath of fresh air in a team.

Transition and half back is critical to modern football and where the majority of offensive play starts.

Having a weapon like Smith at hb forces an immediate change in the opposition strategy, which results in further changes upfield.

We are much more dangerous across the ground with Smith at hb and our transition could be lethal.

I just hope we are flexible which I think we will be

I'd like to see some of our good mids spend time across half back at times like Hawks with Mitchell and hodge

Both Sloane and B Crouch have played well at U18 national level across half back and I would love to see us build that sort of flexibility

Seedsman , Hampton , Menzel , Gore are others that have ability to rotate through there

Laird is another interesting question , he has some ability to play in midfield but is just so good across half back

I think we were the best transition side in the league from D50 to F50 according to CD stats , smith a big reason for this but we have others on our list now as well that can help with this

Funny how we are hopeless at kick in strategies though that are also D50 transitions , hope Pyke can fix this

Sorry but I've got to call bullshit. My recollection of Laird's season is playing that intercepting role off half back.

If he went in the middle it was a rarity not most games.

Same, I can't remember seeing Laird in the centre more than once, let alone for most games, just because he can play in the middle doesn't mean he did play there. Being there for 1 or 2 bounces a game should barely count.

We could rotate Sloane, Smith, b crouch, seedsman, Hampton, jaensch, Henderson, Grigg & Laird through hbf, wing &/or midfield.

Yeah I'm with EC, Laird very rarely plays in the middle, he might roam up the ground but he's still playing that HB role.

Definitely for a good portion of the hawthorn game at home but only cameos other than that
He played large portions in the middle against North (might have been last year), St Kilda and Hawthorn. Basically when he tags. So yeah not every game.

He definitely could play more in the middle though.

Just out of interest, Edwards coaching Glenelg U18's next year. Seems like a big step down from assistant at Port. Bad wraps? Other interests?
