Just out of interest, Edwards coaching Glenelg U18's next year. Seems like a big step down from assistant at Port. Bad wraps? Other interests?
.....in the Smith debate we have to factor in that the midfield is the singularly most important zone on the ground .......you put your best players in the midfield to:
a) win the ball
b) spread quickly, run and carry with damaging disposal to the forwards
c) strong footy IQ to deal with zones and make good decisions
d) two way running
you need approx 10 rotating thru ....i'll let people compile their lists
It's because we haven't built the depth yet , we have more chance to achieve that sort of flexibility since our list changes and should do soIt's a good question
The reason we don't have players do what Hodge, Burgoyne, Mitchell do is because we don't have players with the varied skills to do so.
Win a hard contested ball in the guts
Be creative with it when they do
Read the game across half back
Distribute with accuracy by foot
Who do we have who ticks all those boxes?
Apart from Doedee I mean
Didn't know where to put this .....didn't want to resurrect the Hampton trade thread ....so here goes
This is for lunacy
This is a compilation of 3 games i think ....one in 2012, 2013, and 2015? ......forget as compiling is so tedious
Things to note IMO
1. Remember that in the first 3 seasons GWS was getting walloped .....IIRC Nth Melb won by 120 points
2. the 2012 games he played as a forward and IMO where he looked most natural
3. in 2013 they moved him to HB .....but he ended up in a BP .....looks like they were trying for him to emulate Chris Yarran, in fact he moves very similar ?
Back Pocket certainly saw the worse of Hampton .......his best was centre/forward where he had more space to run & carry
4. I've left in commentary where Hampton is praised by commentators
5. I must have watched 5 games of GWS / Hampton .....IMO Hampton is not a strong mark of the ball ......he's quick with a wicked sidestep who loves to attack, run & carry .......his disposal is fine, his handball and decision making is fine
Hampton is similar to Yarran, do you play him back, centre or forward .......subject to his tank, he'd make a fine wingman, it's just the poor overhead aspect i don't like
Enjoy ....
He would have been pretty young in that gameI've watched Hampton over the years and am glad we targeted him.
Those highlights show two things he needs to be working on over the summer:
- losing the dinky kick (although looked like GWS never had a viable target for him to kick to so will wait and see)
- get some more intensity into his attack on the ball. When he went hard at it he was able to shake people off. When he dawdled he got caught or didn't have any real effect on the contest. He needs to spend the summer with Riley knight. That kid is like a bull at a gate - 110% at every ground ball

Because next natural progression for Brodie Smith is to move into the midfield. Simon Goodwin was a gun HBF then he became a gun midfielder. So many gun midfielders were AA HBF before they started getting gigs as AA midfielders. Its a natural progression for us and Smithers himself. Especially now that we are considered a little bit lighter on in the midfield than we have been in years. Games of footy are won and lost in the midfield. Roles of HBFs are much easier to fill than those in the midfield.People need to start thinking though, why would you change up Smith's position after he became an AA half back just because they had the plan to groom him into a midfielder after 3 years in the system.
Sure his desire is to play more midfield minutes, yet as a coach and his team mates, I'd be like, "mate, this half back role is working for us and it's one of the main reasons as to why we've been a more improving side over the last 2 years why change structure now"?
Brodie is still how old? I'm sure in 2-3 years time when he is at his peak at 25-26 he'll be dominating the midfield for us.
But for now, leave the structure (apart from the new guys) to as it is as we know it works

Supposedly had a few offers in Melbourne, but didn't want to move since he's got young kids.Have heard he is mending fences at the AFC since his departure from Port. Good for our Jackson chances.
Transition and half back is critical to modern football and where the majority of offensive play starts.
Having a weapon like Smith at hb forces an immediate change in the opposition strategy, which results in further changes upfield.
We are much more dangerous across the ground with Smith at hb and our transition could be lethal.

Great effort but...Sorry folks just realised that only one game was uploaded for Hampton .....oops

It's funny that Gore is considered the steak knives of our trade week imports, yet he is the only one who's original club wanted to keep him.
Ok lunacy, Stiffy_18, 1990crow & Rory Walkerfield i have added the other two video's now into my original post #428 for Curtley Hampton ......sorrySorry folks just realised that only one game was uploaded for Hampton .....oops
