Training 2015/16 preseason training (discussion)

Well I got down to training at just after 9am and there wasn't many players on the ground ,mostly the rehab guys when I arrived .
Fred Z informed me that players had been on the ground doing warm ups but they soon left the ground and went into the Gym.
There were no stand out performers today just quite a few doing weights . Johnson came out and did some goal kicking but the rest namely Sandi ,Fyfe ,Suban Clarke ,De-boar ,Sutcliffe ,Hill ,Hannath ,Silvagni Walters Ballas , Spurr , Tabbener ,Barlow ,Deluca , Dawson , Ibbo , Sheridan ,Weller , Mzungu ,Crozier , Blakley , Smith , Yarran and Micky Barlow did the walking with weights . Fyfe was instructed to take larger strides by Webber when he was carrying 2 x 40 KG weights . Barlow looks to be in the best shape he has been in since he was recruited . Walters had support on his calf .
Bennell was working hard in the Gym as was D Pearce . Langdon was doing laps early , then he did a couple of walks with the weights .
All the players left the field just after 10.15 am except Alex Pearce who was working one on one with the physio .He ran end to end for 15 minutes then did high stepping walk lifting each knee to waist height ,followed by agility exercise . He is a long way off but the coaches are happy with his progress .
There were no obvious signs of discomfort after he finished but he wasn't pushing too hard either .
It would appear that Zack Clarke is over the knee soreness that he was experiencing last year . As he was going into the Gym to finish a weights session he was in good spirits .
Griffin I predict will be in the main training group next week he looks to be back to full strength and agility .
No sign of Pav Morra ,Clancee , Neale ,Mundy or Mayne today .
Fred will fill in anything I missed .
Poor effort goes to the fellow training watches that were absent:cool::):):)

I don't think Brady injured his ankle today. He did go down following a head clash with Walters, probably has pretty sore nose. No one at fault. Gray just didn't anticipate which way Walters was going to turn when playing on from a mark.
Clark was very impressive today. Other players who are on the fringe that performed well were Blakely, Mzungu and Weller.
Quite a lot of mis kicking and spilling of marks probably due to the strong breeze.
What this shows is that the players in the rehab go through good conditioning to get them up to speed quickly. Fyfe, Johnson & Clarke have slipped back into the swing of things without too much fuss. Hopefully the same for Alex Pearce and Bennell when they are right to go.

I heard Chris Bond on PR just before noon and he expects Bennell to be ready for early season between rounds 1 and 3. They are hoping for him to play some time in our last PS game. With regards to Yarren he stated he is a fair way back. Not only has he been stalled with his medial ligament injury but he has only had 2 preseasons with Subiaco so his fitness is way behind what is expected at AFL level. Wasn't a criticism just a fact. Expect him to build throughout the year. I was surprised that he stated any AFL games for Yarren this year would be a bonus.

He also spoke about Collins and they like the cut of his jibe. Expect him to play good time in the PS games.

That lays to rest the likelihood of Yarran making an early appearance then.Any idea what sort of aerobic/running stuff Bennell gets up to indoors couldhavebeen cycling and that antigravity running machine we've got I guess??
Is the Bond interview available somewhere??
Yes I'm in withdrawal!

With A.Pearce training still limited , the first few round look like Collins and Silva will be fighting for one spot left by macca with Johnson ( if fit) as the preferences if playing 2 back instead of 3.

Bulldogs (RD 1) may go smaller so perhaps Johnson and Dawson as talls will be enough and there is Ibbotson. But essentially you're right - certainly for the Eagles in RD 3. Guess it depends on the mix. Last year with no Silvani or Dawson, went just Johnson and McPharlin.

When we attend training you can't see into the Gym so I wouldn't know what the players are doing but I can say he was covered in sweat and blowing a bit .

Thought you woulda been in there doing your interviews and signing autographs coulda;)
Nah thanks for answering.
I've always wondered how we get so much conditioning into guys coming back from injury without them being able to put in the ks on the ground.

The only non Freo players or coaches that get inside are invited family members , ex players or Major sponsors

Reckon the Doggies will be ****ed sans Crameri. Tipping an 8 goal win to us.

Interested to hear how one of our local lads Darcy Tucker has settled in over there and how he's shaping up, quality individual who I believe has all the tools to make into a serious AFL footballer??

As a frequent training watcher IMO he has good physical presence and his skill set has helped him to learn and adapt well to his first preseason.

Have you watched any of his junior football? And what do you like most about him?

Every training watcher that has seen him in action has liked what they have seen. Decent size already with a beautiful kick on him. In the training sims he's making good decisions and looks comfortable.

I know people at the Ballarat Rebels who tell me he is a quality lad with great leadership qualities and having seen him play a fair bit locally over the last 2 years he has an all round good skillset, very good left foot, and alright on his non preferred as well, good pace, excellent endurance and not afraid to take the game on with run and carry....and never takes a backward step, in fact can get quite aggressive as was shown in one of his U18's Champs game when he was yellow carded for a "square up" hit on SA's Stephen Tahana. His 2015 season wasn't quite as good as his 2014 season when he made the All Australian U18 Team as an under ager but there were good reasons for that as he was coming off a very limited pre-season after copping a quite serious ankle injury late in the 2014 season that required pins being inserted. Personally I can't believe how he slipped down the draft order into the 2nd round and think you got an absolute bargain. He's played mainly off half back but I believe in time he'll progress to the wing/midfield.

Darcy is tracking along nicely .
I think he will be playing for Peel league this year.
He has a terrific left boot on him.

Apeness was doing some shuttle runs with a trainer, albeit briefly. Didn't do any weights on the ground that I saw.
No sign of Hurley today.

Coulda cant answer what Bennell gets up to indoors as he from my knowledge and his training reports only gets to training on the odd Saturday (and rarely during the week) and we cant get into the Gym to see as we can only peer into the gym through darkened glass window and it seems the club doesn't like that anymore so have shifted the boundary of our viewing area this week

I've just often wondered how we manage to get injured players so fit when they have prolonged lay-offs.
I didn't actually expect that couldhavebeen would have access to the gym.
I know the very glass you're talking about Dan.
I've said it before that the antigravity treadmill thingy must be worth its weight.

EDIT:Regarding Tucker,I saw the last training session of 2015 and the first of 2016.On both occasions I noticed DT and there was not one thing he did that I didn't find impressive.
Movement to make himself an available option, speed and intelligence of decision making, kick, handball, physique, speed, endurance, definite hard edge and fearlessness.
Seemed to tick more boxes than there were available for a first year player.:thumbsu::thumbsu:

Thanks heaps for the response. Always welcome knowledgeable posters who can help contribute to our board.

Anyone got the skiny on when the intra-club is happening? The NAB games are looming very large on the calendar.

List hammered each other Friday and we play Richmond at Rushton this coming Friday so I dunno how much more game punishment they'll subject them to.
Gotta bear in mind that one intraclub with us is the equivalent of 2 AFL games(or 3 against the slimesuckers).

This'll be the first time they haven't announced the intra-clubs as a family day. I remember going last year... the game was a rippa by Walters IIRC.

Was loking forward to seeing one of the matches before the NAB kicks in.
