Anyone else see the Channel Eagle news last night?

Apparently the Eagles are the only side from the west to travel this season.

Can you believe that they will have played in 3 separate states in 3 consecutive games????

How dare the AFL do this to them!

No mention of their soft as shite draw though

It doesn't seem to be on their website sorry.

It basically said that Lyon is trying to divert attention away from us and our last few performances by saying that the Hawks are the team to beat.

Said that Richmond exposed us by getting an early break on us which no other team has been able to do and that we struggle to catch up quickly in a game where we get behind because we dont have the ability to score quickly due to our structures. Said that Hawks and Sydney can.

Said that we'll greatly miss Johnson and that we can't afford an injury to McPharlin in the next month or we're stuffed.

That was the gist of it, so nothing earth shattering or what some of the posters here don't already know but it was a good article and better than any of the other half way "report card" articles that I've seen.

I was also interested in his comment about our structure holding us back from scoring quickly and heavily. Would explain why Balla and Walters haven't set the world on fire. I personally think we'll see a change to the structures in the second half of the year that'll see us score more efficiently. We've seen in a few of our early games where we've jumped out of the blocks and scores heavily and quickly for half a quarter and then stopped. I think that's Ross testing the system.

That, I would say is the thrust of the article. Sort of implying Lyon is being disingenuous in continuing to claim underdog status for us.
He makes the point that Richmond are the only team to have gotten hold of us and that was off a series of short breaks and a hard slogging game the week before. That even though Richmond jumped us we got back into it won the rest of the game. Judge suggests that teams coming up against us in the second half of the year will consider that they are playing the best team.

I don't agree with any of it. I think we got off to a flyer due to Fyfe's amazing form, Pav having a purple patch, Sandi in career best form as well as Johnson. We caught teams on the hop with our Sandi->Fyfe->Pav blitzkrieg clearances but that has been worked out now, Jonno is out and Pav has dropped off.

We'll find out how we match up with them soon but I don't see anything that suggests we can beat Hawthorn and Sydney have improved considerably since we played them while we have gone backwards.

That's interesting, what would you say has 'gone back words?' After the Geelong game our mids were being compared to the great Bris and Geelong teams. Is everybody just flat? Is our game not being executed or has it been worked out? Granted were 10-1 but the Collingwood game will tell us if we're still on the right path or we do have some concerns after an indifferent 4 weeks.

The main things for me are Pav has lost that clean first touch ball handling and his kicking radar since the start of the year. He was marking even half chances and converting earlier in the year. That and the fact our plan A - Sandi->Fyfe clearance strategy has been worked out. Teams just sit off and gang tackle Fyfe and leave a man out the back for the rushed clearing kick out of a pack.
We were basically jumping teams but hacking it out of the middle and Pav was playing like a 25 year old. Now the hacking kick is intercepted and with Pav grassing a lot of marks we don't really have much else up forward so our scoring has dropped off.
Very simplistic but thats how I see it.

You are quite right, the game next week will tell us a hell of a lot, like if we can cover for no Jonno and if we have a plan B for clearances and scoring.

The manner in which Richmond won suggests Freo is still vulnerable to teams who are effective with their inside 50.

Sometimes when I hear people talk about what good teams are vulnerable to it reminds me of some cricket commentary I heard a while back:

Commentator A: "I think teams have worked out that Tendulker is vulnerable to balls that pitch just outside off and move away at the last minute."

Commentator B: "So you're saying he's vulnerable to extremely good balls that are extremely hard to bowl?"

Maybe you're right about that but I didn't take it that way. I think it was about the fact Lyon repeatedly used the "we're all chasing Hawthorn" line during the pre-season and maybe in rd 1 or 2 but then there was no mention of it until last week. In fact there were even comments of embracing the "hunted" tag prior to the Adelaide game.

Whilst the comment about the Hawks is correct, I just found the timing interesting and I took it that Judge did too.

But Hawthorn aren't vulnerable to that. You go inside 50 with precision, so will they. Freo won most of the main stats against Richmond but still went down by around 5 goals. All Richmond had to do was control the ball for a quarter to win, and Freo couldn't make up the difference.

Watch the way Hawthorn line up around the 50 metre arc so there are always options out wide and in the corridor. If they have the ball in the pocket, they will channel it back in board. If they have it on the right side of the ground outside 50 they will switch it left quickly to Suckling, Smith or one of their other left footers and score from there.

I'd argue every team is vulnerable to precision entries, the better teams are just better at reducing their opponents to 'dirty ball' entries more often while creating more clean entries themselves.

That first qtr from Richmond was one of the most freakish perfect storms I've ever seen from a team. Bit of an anomaly I think, but yeah, I'm under no illusions that Hawthorn are still the team to beat.

I try stick to the lukewarm water Lachie's manager was talking about. We're neither as good as everyone thought we were a few weeks ago nor as bad as everyone thinks we are after the last couple of weeks.

McCarthy is contracted at the Giants until the end of 2017, but that has not deterred the Dockers, who along with Michael Apeness, think he can fill the void when Matthew Pavlich retires. Fremantle have cooled on wayward Gold Coast big man Charlie Dixon in recent weeks and is hopeful it can organise a trade for McCarthy, 20. Sources said McCarthy is happy at the Giants and has a great relationship with well-regarded welfare manager Craig Lambert. But it’s understood he will consider rival offers and what is best for his long-term future.

So we're getting McCarthy after Pav retires at the end of 2017 it seems.

Good to know Apeness feels secure enough in his position at the club to give his opinion on our list management decisions.

I think that's a bit simplistic. Richmonds first qtr was one of the best qtrs of footy seen by any side in a long long time. Implying that all they did was "control the ball" is misleading to say the least.

The Port vs Hawthorn game was very similar to the Freo vs Richmond.Port played the near perfect first quarter and Hawthorn spent the rest of the game playing catch up.Any side is vulnerable to the perfect 30 minutes of ball movement.

Hawthorn got to 8 points away from home. Freo got to 27 points at from home. That's the difference. All teams are capable of conceding a quarter of perfect football. Hawthorn are capable of striking back.

What's Freo's greatest combeback to win? 20 something points?
