Paparone looking bigger could really fill out I reckon now looking a lot less string beany. And Aish has added a fair bit of size it seems. Dawson looks like the only one of the new draftees physically big enough to make an impact.

Can anyone tell me how Rich is progressing? So excited to see him back.
He was participating in contact drills on Friday. Reckon he's tracking just fine for round 1.

Body wise, Billy Evans looks ready to go too.

that surprised me tbh. even though I haven't spoken to him in just over a year he seemed to have added at least 5 kgs in all the right places. Didn't really seem like someone who could be that big that fast. Will play this season imo.

Went along this morning and got there a little late, however I managed to catch most of the training. All of the first year players are down in Melbourne doing their AFLPA induction.

There was a big focus on contested work and they really got stuck into it. In the beginning it was one on one contested work, where one would keep their body in between their opponent and the ball for 10 seconds or so. They would then swap over and repeat the drill. Stef is looking a bit larger in the chest, same with McStay. All healthy competition going on between the guys as well.

They then broke up into their colours to do some more contested work. They sort of stood in a star shape about 10 metres wide with a player at a cone on each point of the star and they would have a coach in the middle and he would roll the ball to two players standing side by side and one would try to get the ball back while the other would try and tackle them. Few mismatches (Lester vs Martin) although Lester did well against him. No holding back between players and they looked like they really wanted to win the ball. They would then move to the next point on the star and one would start behind the other and the one infront would have to get it back to coach while under pressure from the player behind him. The next point in the star would be two players starting next to each other with a metre gap or so and the coach would roll it between them so they had to first compete for the ball and then get it back to the coach. The last point on the star would be 3 players from one team competing against three from another team to get the ball to a coach standing out of the small area they were competing in.

They then did a drill they have done before, in which a coach throws a player the ball near the back 50 and they have to kick down the line to a contest, but they need to keep the ball in the "red zone" which is the area between the player and the boundary. All the kicks were pretty accurate, except for Aish, it may have just been an aberration because he kicked OK after that mistake (went out on the full, comfortably). DBeams and Rich were the stand outs for mine, lovely kicks down the line to the player in the right position. The player who caught the ball would then look to move it inside on a 45 degree angle and then look the play up the middle while handballing to other players. These players would then look for a lead from the forwards who would go on to try and kick the goal.

They then moved onto a kicking drill exactly like the one I mentioned last week, this time it was more expansive because they were on a field and not in between a running track. They moved it well and looked to play on fairly quickly. All in all pretty good drill.

They then moved on to some stoppage work all over the ground, with the goal being to move it forward to the forward 50 and look for good targets. Archie and either of Martin or Leuy would compete to tap it to one of their mids otherwise the drill would stop. Some of the players lost the man they were supposed to be marking, this would stop the drill. The stoppages were all over the ground, on the wing, in the centre, the forward 50, the back 50. Some of the kicks got a little sloppy but nothing too bad.

Can't say the same for the next drill though, this just got sloppy. Short kicks that did not hit the target or dropped marks. It got to the point where Jed called the group in for a chat and from then on, if you stuffed the kick or dropped the ball, you had to go do some extra practice while the drill kept going. It may have been due to the dew on the ball, making it slippery and a little heavier, but Rich miskicked, so he was off to practice that.

That did a little running in between those drills, but that's no fun to watch or talk about.

Rocky, Pearce, Harzy, Merrett, Clarke and West all in the rehab group doing some running. Couldn't see Bundy out there so I don't know what was happening with him. Any questions and I'll get to them when I can!

Thanks for the very detailed and informative training report Morgs. Sounds like all the boys are putting in the hard yards! Good to see even at the elite level the players get called in by their captain if they are not performing up to the standard they should be! Go Lions! Can't wait til round 1!
