read this tripe article obviously written by a bigfooty Melbourne poster

For me, It's not the findings that is the issue. Who knows. But I think he might be a bit embarrassed in a few years on some of how he got there. Picking and choosing who's shown something and not others. P Mac and Goddard partially criticised or ignored. Billings quite undersold. Certainly seems to be well below Brayshaw in his eyes.

Most of all, although he finally gets there at the end, a decade of high draft picks and an extra top 3 pick for Frawley. Hinted that Bruce was pretty ho hum, by noting he'd be (only) playing for 12 clubs.

I do agree we are largely going (marginally) better on account of stronger older guys, read:Roo. But I'm not sure Melbourne is really the genuine rival. There are a few others more likely to be genuine challengers in the years to come. Giants, Dogs, Pies loom large.

St Kilda’s Paddy McCartin has career ‘issues’, Dermott Brereton says
4

HAWTHORN legend Dermott Brereton has raised searching concerns about Paddy McCartin, just four games into his AFL career.

The former Geelong Falcon produced the best performance of his emerging career against at the weekend, taking nine marks among 14 disposals in the win over Melbourne.

But Brereton fears the 19-year-old, last year’s No.1 draft pick, is lacking in a number of key areas that are essential to succeeding as a power forward.

‘He doesn’t have a great turn of speed, he doesn’t have a great sidestep, he doesn’t seem to have great endurance’

story-fnjuhrxq-1227459679573

“He’s one who interests me greatly at this point in time,” Brereton said on SEN of the 194cm, 94kg big man.

“He does have a few issues with his career as he looks forward.

“He’s meant to be quite a competitive kid, he’s done really well in the TAC Cup, and so he should — he’s a really big kid.

“But once you play AFL level, they’re big, big men. They’re stronger, bigger.

“He doesn’t have a great turn of speed, he doesn’t have a great sidestep, he doesn’t seem to have great endurance.

“He has size but as I said, at AFL level, they all have size, so he needs to work pretty hard at some physical aspects to get separation from his opponents.

“He’s going to get the odd day where he’s able to find the ball but he has to find a long-suit in his game so the opposition can come out and go, ‘Right this (guy) is a threat’, because right at the moment they’re looking at him and not (thinking that).”

Brereton’s comments serve as the first major piece of criticism levelled at McCartin in his short AFL career.

It came amid comparisons to prized Collingwood father-son forward Darcy Moore, who booted five goals in the Magpies’ loss to the Western Bulldogs.

McCartin earned an AFL recall a fortnight ago after kicking nine goals in an impressive three-week block in the VFL for Sandringham.

It had been a tough induction to life as an AFL player for the former St Joseph’s and Geelong Grammar power forward, going goalless in his first two AFL games, then going goalless in three of his first four VFL games.

The Saints have vowed to continue to persist with McCartin this season to fast-track his development.

“If I’m taking him aside and coaching him one-on-one, I’m going to say ‘Tell me what you can do, what your hidden talent is, and let’s work on that so you have a long-suit that you can chop the opposition up with’,” Brereton said. “I can’t see it yet".

Its good to see concerns raised, however i remember in dermies 'day', often players played a couple of years in the 'magoos',with the rare talent making it to the ones, in their first year, goes to show, this number 1 pick title is a cursed title...........or a media hype title

Dermott has Paddy in his sights & won't let up until he's piled ridiculous pressure on him. He doesn't have a sidestep? Seriously? The kid has played 4 games and judgment has been passed already? There really are some fools in the media who just make noise for the sake of getting their names up in lights. I look forward to seeing Paddy make Dermie look like the goose he so often shows himself to be.

How can anyone say this after 4 games. He is just a kid. Same as Hawkins was at that stage. Let's look again in 3 years to make a fair comparison.

I, I, I I I, I'm speechless. I am without speech. I think his trick is being a natural footballer who reads the play really well. He will have size and good hands to go with that. May not be the best forward in the game, but he'll be a player.

Emma Quayle's done another book, and the best part is it's our club she tracks this time.

This should help explain how highly we rated Goddard, McKenzie, Lonie and Sinclair, plus why we overlooked Lamb and many other questions.

Whole-team defence needed to nullify St Kilda’s master and apprentice, says Jackson Trengove

.............."St Kilda’s master Nick Riewoldt and apprentice Paddy McCartin - the No.1 draft pick of 2014 - will pose a hazard from 12.10pm Sunday at Adelaide Oval.
Riewoldt, 32, booted three goals in St Kilda’s comfortable win against Melbourne at the MCG last round and remains potent in the twilight of his glorious career, despite a nagging calf ailment.
“Nick Riewoldt has been a superstar of the game for a ridiculous amount of years and our back six will have our work cut out with their forwards,” said Trengove

It will take a tag-team effort to nullify triple All Australian Riewoldt. “It’s a good challenge for us as a group. We have a younger group down back but it’s a chance for our team to defend as one,” said Trengove.".......................

What a horrendous article - hate the media sometimes. Brereton's just a fat Gordon Ramsay.
Hope Paddy's mentally strong enough to ignore crap like this that he is inevitably going to attract for being the #1 draft pick.

I'm really happy with him, he leads well and shows good hands and can kick. He's doesn't seem to be short on confidence either. Running into position to take the pass from Sinclair so he could have a shot on goal, he could have easily just let Jack take the shot. We won't know his true value for a few years.

derm's a flog. Every now and then he gets something right, but most of the time it's utter trash. He clearly hates the saints, the only player he ever has a nice word to say about is josh bruce, because he coached him and gets indirect kudos from it.
Yeah spot on, theres nothing more frustrating when that campaigner tries to claim credit for turning Josh Bruce into the player he is today. A grade flog.

This should help explain how highly we rated Goddard, McKenzie, Lonie and Sinclair, plus why we overlooked Lamb and many other questions.
that could be a book by itself :p

Lloyd, Lyon praise Paddy

PADDY McCartin’s performance against Melbourne on Sunday showed his significant potential, according to AFL greats Matthew Lloyd and Gary Lyon.

The pair, who are now prominent media figures, booted 1352 goals between them for Essendon and Melbourne in careers spanning 15 seasons.

Before McCartin was drafted, Lloyd saw him up close at the AIS-Academy as an assistant coach.

Speaking on Footy Classified, five-time All-Australian Lloyd suggested McCartin’s attack on the footy was the best he has seen in a young player.

“His competitiveness is fantastic,” Lloyd said.

“I’ve come through the junior ranks with Paddy and I’ve never seen a guy know how to use his body and be so aggressive for such a young man, which is brilliant to see.

“It was his performance in blustery conditions that was so impressive. I think he needs a huge pre-season to get his body in better shape than what it is now.”

Lyon agreed and urged fans to be patient with McCartin.

“This is a timely reminder for everyone to take a breath on this,” Lyon said.

“The kid got taken with the number one pick for a reason and you saw it on the weekend, it was so exciting.”

McCartin took nine marks, booted one goal and registered six inside 50s in St Kilda’s 37-point win over Melbourne.
