Carlisle wouldnt be worth two pick 18s anyway. You can get some absolute gems with picks 16, 17 or 18.
For example, he isn't worth 2 Luke Dunstans.

Yeah or you could get 2 Ryan Shoenmakers also...Im not saying he is or isn't worth it, but he is potentially one of the best key backs in the game..

I think some people do tend to overrate draft picks though I remember when we traded For Burgoyne the outcry of giving up Pick 9 for a 27 year old also some didn't want to trade for Brian Lake he's 31 finished etc etc...

Bolded would be around about worth Carlisle or moreso on their own. Italicised potentially pass the 'would be worth two of them' test. The rest would have minimal or no currency in the current market. Regardless of what you might think of some clubs' development and scouting (even we took Thorp, Ellis and Dowler) the odds of two late first round picks being worth as much as Carlisle are pretty low.

You have to take into account our 1st Round picks are effectively early 2nd Round Picks... You can't just expect 1 pick 18 or 19 to get a deal like that done.

We couldn't afford both, surely not even close.

As for a trade deal for Carlisle, if we lose suckling and Whitecross through free agency hopefully we get a nett end of first round compensation pick given the rumoured 4 x $400k Brisbane offer for Suckling. In turn we can then send our first round pick and our end of first round compensation pick to Essendon for Carlisle.

Preferably keep next years first rounder in one of the better drafts for the last handful of years

I just vomited. Don't want to give all that up for a player who is likely to serve a two year ban. Nothing against him as a player but he did the crime and should do the time. Massive risk that I can't believe our club will take.

Not really it was pick 9 and Williams....we never had our hands on pick 16.

Burgoyne had already proven that he was elite material ...apart from his knee issues which had kept him out.
