2 each season going forward.

Simon Lethlean has already said there will only be one bye next year, which in turn limits the number of thursday night games the league will fixture.

"We'll obviously start with Thursday night and last year we had four in the middle of winter and I think that'll be the focus again," Lethlean said. "Without a second bye it's hard to get the six-day breaks right so we tend to roll three off the back of the byes in mid-year and then take one more off the back of the Thursday to Friday. So four's the right number for the moment and we'll try and get those games to be big events at the right venues and back them up with good Fridays as well."

Fully expect round 1 next year to start with Carlton v Richmond on Thursday, and end with Geelong v Hawthorn on Easter Monday with no Good Friday game. These are fairly established fixtures that draw and rate well. Only other definite part of that fixture as far as Im aware will be Port playing at home.

Dont worry folks, Carlton will get less Thursdays and fridays overall, but I dont expect the season opener to change.

Lethlean explained that lack of access to its major grounds around the country in the early parts of the season was the biggest stumbling block to a second bye for the players.

"We've been pretty open with the PA (Players' Association) that until we get access to the MCG and SCG and Gabba and all our main venues for round one that we can't fit a second bye in," he said.

"We've got to start a week earlier to get a second bye in, we won't do so without those grounds available.

"It just means lower-drawing games, not-as-good match-ups and it means interstate teams are travelling twice in a row because they've got no home venue.

"But we are certainly working with Cricket Australia and our venues to try and get that access."

Thought it had been arranged for the Sheffield Shield to be moved to Junction Oval or some place. Swans and Lions could just play away in round 1 until something is sorted up there.

Lethlean also said Good Friday football was more likely to make its debut in 2017 rather than next year.

"With Easter in round one (next year), it would be doubtful to have Good Friday in 2016, having an AFL match there," he said.

:confused:o_O Is that code for "We decided it was too hard for some reason"?

Junction Oval development wont be completed until the start of 2017. Work hasnt started yet.

Work is scheduled to commence before the end of the year, and it is due for completion prior to the beginning of the 2017-18 season.

Its more likely code for "we see no need to rush into it"

'rush'? They've been avoiding it for decades.
They've actively chosen not to do it for decades. Saying No" repeatedly isnt avoiding it, its refusing. Mclachlan was the first CEO to come out and say it was being considered.
I recalled some religious players in the past did express the preference of not to play on the Good Friday.

Doesn't sound like confirmation of Crows vs Cats round 2, just media hype/speculation - surely the first game between the Crows vs Dangerfield will be high on the list for a Thursday/Friday/Saturday night prime time slot and not a Sunday afternoon or twilight timeslot which if they play in round 2 will have to be considering Geelong always play on Easter Monday

Apparently the broadcasters and clubs received a copy of finalised fixture today, so we should start hearing some leaks of news soon

With the fixture announcement weeks away, this thread will be for you to not only thrash out ideas and listing your wishlist, but your own complete fixtures.

Note: My inclusions will never happen and the Round 23 fixture is a guide on how I reckon each side will go.

Let's see what you've come up with.

the reigning champs should always open the season at home unveiling the flag symbolizing the begging of their title defense. but it shouldn't be a grand final rematch first up. but still someone expected to be competitive. hawthorn vs geelong would be the perfect season opener.

Should be the Prelim rematch.
Hawthorn v Fremantle at the MCG
