I don't know how many times it needs to be said...

Port will play at home and Crows away round 1.
Ditto with West Coast and Freo. It's our turn to play away.

West Coast v Richmond in Perth would be a great Thursday night season opener. Also allows Eagles to have a couple more 'blockbuster' games early without having a 6 day break, I'd be happy with Eagles Thurs at home rnd 1, Eagles Fri away rnd 2, Eagles Fri home rnd 3. Then don't see them until the bye rounds I expect. Gives some good games early, rewards Eagles for finals, and means less 6 day breaks. Also means the Perth matches could be played at night, rather than afternoon/twilight, for the first month where it can still be quite hot.

Thursday: West Coast v Richmond, Perth

As for Friday, I imagine it'll be between two Victorian clubs and at the MCG. Believe the Dogs have requested a game against the Pies and I expect they'll be rewarded, and the Pies having got Treloar etc would have the AFL very excited for this one.

Friday: Collingwood v Western Bulldogs, MCG

Saturday I'd give Fremantle their away game. Less likely to cop 6 day breaks early than if they started on a Sunday. When they get their ANZAC day game which will be on a Monday in round 5-6, that will give them a 9 day break and then a 6 day the next week. Guessing Etihad will get a Saturday night game, as will Queensland because of potential heat factors.

Saturday:
Sydney v GWS, SCG
Port Adelaide v North, Adelaide Oval
Essendon v Fremantle, Etihad
Gold Coast v Adelaide, Metricon

Another Etihad and MCG game on the Sunday. Whilst somewhat unfair, Melbourne and St Kilda seem to be confined to Sunday openers v lower drawing teams, don't see that changing.

Sunday:
St Kilda v Carlton, Etihad
Melbourne v Brisbane, MCG

Believe Easter Monday is still a thing? Should get a huge crowd, Hawks reigning champs and Cats fans full of hope with Dangerfield and other acquisitions. Not sure whose home game it would be, I like the idea of Geelong home game and Hawks can unveil the flag at a 'lesser' occasion.

Monday: Geelong v Hawthorn, MCG

Can see that round being likely. Only 4 games on paper don't look like fantastic match-ups, but that's not too bad. Mainly trying to reward teams. Dockers and Crows not rewarded because it's 'their turn' to play away, but I'd give them big home games the following week (e.g. v Hawks, Pies, Port)

Basically, if I didn't articulate it well, what I would like to see is

1) less 6-day breaks for the WA teams. With round 1 and the bye rounds, there's plenty of opportunities to give them the match-ups and exposure they deserve without flogging them with 5-6 day breaks

2) new teams getting Friday night. Dogs should get a few. Melbourne hopefully get v Richmond MCG weekend of ANZAC day and 1 more. Saints get v Pies, and GWS should get one or two (probably would be away games).
Richmond and Hawthorn I can deal with getting say 5. Too much but they would be used in getting other teams home Friday games e.g. Melbourne v Richmond, Port v Hawthorn. 3 home and 2 away. Pies 4 - 2 home and 2 away. Less Carlton please - people will sook if we get 2 but I could think that's reasonable considering Victorian ratings is what they are after and Pies and Essendon games would draw in. Just not 7 thanks.

3) Shake up the season a bit. Brisbane v Hawthorn at some stage at Gabba please. No Carlton v Richmond friday night. Give GWS some better games. Demons and Saints less shit stuff please. Have a NON-Victorian friday night game! Adelaide v Port, Eagles v Dockers would be awesome on a Friday night - maybe Eagles v Dockers on that public holiday they have in WA - isn't it around rnd 8-10 usually?

I would rather prefer Hawthorn play West Coast in the week prior to Round 1, to kick off the 2016 AFL Premiership season, then everyone else play one week later (ie Richmond v Carlton at MCG).

A precedent has been set before, back in 1985, where as part of Victoria's 150th celebrations, the 1984 grand finalists Essendon and Hawthorn brought forward their Round 3 game to the week prior to Round 1, to officially launch the 1985 season at VFL Park. The Bombers won (memorable for Roger Merrett reported for wasting time and the debut of WA's Steve Malaxos for the Hawks) the first of four encounters and ended up winning the 1985 premiership.
