I am so bleh about this draft. There are no absolute game breakers along any lines like there were last year. Lots of good talent that runs deep, just no one to get crazy excited about. Especially at our picks.

I think Andy McGrath is about as close to a game breaker as you'll see in a long time. So is McCluggage, Petrevski-Seton, even Brodie does some nice stuff.

Ainsworth is your game changer, he can do a lot of damage in just a quarter. Explosive and is very well built already. Plenty to like in this draft and we won't know who the game breakers really are until a couple of years from now. There will be some though.

Yeah, definitely right about Ainsworth, forgot about him.

Can hayward win his own ball? Doesnt need to be an inside beast, but unless he has some contested ability he will find it hard in our system as a forward.

McLean, for instance, gets down and dirty when he has to, although he is a fly weight.
Hayward is very good in 1v1 situations and is very willing to tackle and pressure. Not too outside at all.

Hayward kicked 9 in a prelim final and had to have several defenders clog up all his space after he looked like he was going to do the same thing in a Grand Final. Don't get much more game changing than that and he could very well be around our first pick.

What key defenders?

Not many good KPP's out there this year.

Only one I'd really look at 26 is Cox.

Sam McLarty at around pick 50 could be a decent pick but I'm starting to believe his abilities would be better used as a CHF instead of a CHB.

Maibum is pretty good at what he does but can he change his game style to adapt, think there's a possibility he could even last to our third round selection

The way we approached the trade period it does seem as though we rate next years pool higher, that or keeping assets to trade in a player.

Fair chance we're looking at one of those Geelong VFL boys with that pick in the 50's?

Not many put their hand up for afl imo
Their captain was the best but ee have too many players similar to him

I don't think Pat Kerr is really our type. He's a good player, and will likely make a decent impact at AFL level, but I struggle to see how he could become a genuine star. He's just a tad vanilla. He's got good all-round attributes but doesn't have the endurance, contested marking ability or scoreboard impact of Battle. I don't see the need to pick up 2 KPFs (Battle and Kerr) if both aren't going to become best 22. A combo of Hayward and Battle would have far more potential to benefit.

At this stage, these are the guys I'd want us looking at:

18 - Hayward, Venables, Battle, Logue, Simpkin, Florent, Gallucci
26 - Drew, Battle, Gallucci, Witherden, Hayward (if available), Sproule
(I really like Duman and Ridley but 26 would be a bit of a stretch to take them, I reckon)
50 - Long, Duman or Ridley (if available), Ronke (if we don't take Drew), Parfitt, Maibaum (if available)
and if we use it, 75 - Lachie Murphy, any mobile ruckman

Just because he's not good enough to be taken before 18 doesn't mean he's not good enough to be taken at 18. Gotta get drafted somewhere.
I didn't say not draft him, just that I'd be curious as to why.
Personally I rate him a bit higher than everyone else & Battle a bit lower than everyone else.

Cox is the main one. Logue too but unlikely he's there for us to select by the sounds of it. Macreadie. Rotham would play as a pseudo-KPD in our system from what I've seen as well.

Pretty happy overall with the Trade results, we didn't lose much and stand to gain some great inclusions next year to improve us even further. The next focus and subject for a great deal of discussion and debate will be the Draft with everyone having their own opinions and rightly so, that's what this forum is all about. My two bob's worth as far as who we should target at this stage should be to address some of our weaknesses if I can call them that considering we have just won the flag, are as follows although not sure where my selections will actually fall to in draft order and it's all pure speculation, but here goes:
Jarrod Berry -191cms 80kg - uncompromising Mid/Rebounding Half Back who may develop into a Key Defender who runs with the ball and takes the game on.
Tim English - 203cms 86kg -Agile Athletic Ruckman who has the ability to roam around the ground and push forward to take a big grab.
Jack Graham - 183cms 83kg - Mid/Half back -SA captain who won the Larke Medal for the best player in this year's Div 1 Championships. Hard at it, hard running, long kicking mid/defender who has played at senior SANFL this year and is ready to go.
It's hard to assess the character of Draftees but what I can glean is that all three would pass the culture test and be great additions to the playing group.
Discussion and opinions welcomed.
