Murdoch has the benefit of being able to sneak in on the flanks while GHS has to be a part of the main midfield rotations. If the club didn't see Caddy there then GHS is going to have even more trouble. If I had to predict which of the two will play more games at AFL level next year I'd say Murdoch would be a heavy favorite.
I think they are both treading water for different reasons. They are different players of course and Murdoch, as you correctly point out, may be potentially more useful in more 'positions' for us as our list stands and only if we are cruelled by injury.
I feel that GHS, unlike Murdoch can at least find the pill and is held out of the team only because of our strong(ish) midfield .
GHS would be the more likely of the two to carve out a career somewhere else.
Sorry to say but I can't see Murdoch, unless he improves markedly, carving anything other than the occasional sunday roast.

Its structural. Ghs can play mid but not fwd-but cockatoo or lang will be preferred to him to replace caddy as they can play fwd even though ghs is a better mid. For the same reason murdoch could get games as the fwd line has vacancies the mids dont. Ghs wont get games unless guthrie duncan or blitz are moved out of the midfield and into other positions.

24. Alex Witherden, Josh Battle or Brennan Cox - reckon Witherden is quality but will likely be gone by our first. Battle impresses me but I have doubts over his role at AFL level. More your 2nd-3rd forward where we need to be looking at a true key position type.

Cox is the one that ticks a number of boxes for me. Terrific athlete who is ideally suited for a KPD role. With Gardner we could possibly have out two major defensive key position posts sorted for the next 10 years.

38. Willem Drew or Patrick Lipinski - really like the look of Drew. Nice team orientated player. Very neat skills. Looks to have excellent game sense and a good reader of the play. I can see the appeal of Lipinski - versatile type who can go forward as well as being productive in the midfield.

42. Sam Walker or Patrick Kerr - If we miss Battle, I reckon Kerr is a chance to fall. Maybe not this far? Walker looks like just that reliable half back that will play 200 games. Not a star but one of the first picked every week regardless.

64. Alex Villis - the small defender we are looking for? Great skills. Zippy type. Would be a pretty good get at this stage of the draft.

72. Ben Long -
we need a crumbing small forward and he did this well for Footscray in the VFL this year.

Villis has a heart condition and will probably have to retire. I like your ideas with the rest.

Not every player needs to win a lot of the ball to play their role. I'm fine with Murdoch getting 14-15 disposals a game as long as he is doing his off the ball work well and when he has the ball he is direct with it and if he is playing forward that he is kicking goals regularly.

I'd disagree with you on the bold. Players of GHS type struggle to find second homes without a strong showing at AFL level. While teams are more willing roll the dice of athletic flankers based off attributes even if they show little exposed form.

I like your thoughts. Brennan Cox is certainly one who deserves consideration. While he is great in the air, at ground level he is ridiculously composed for his size. Wouldn't surprise me if a club reached in the first round.

Alex Villis is a sad story. Rated him highly. Hopefully the latest opinions create an opportunity for him. Another to cop a nasty measurement at the draft combine too. Apparently measured close to 183cm mid year, came in at 178cm at the combine. Tough run.

Hadn't heard about Villis. Devastating for him if it means his dream of getting onto an AFL list is now over.

I think at 24 our options for someone who hasn't got many limitations are going to be narrow. Now that I've had a little more chance to view video I really think that Cox would be a better pick than Kerr with our first pick. I think Cox is more likely to be able to forge a longer career than Kerr (I'm assuming Battle is gone before 24). Kerr to me, is just a little too one dimensional to take with our first. I'd be happy to entertain him for a later pick though.

Drew looks to have formed a neat partnership with McCluggage at Nth Ballarat and is probably a little underrated as a consequence of playing alongside him. There is always a lot of crystal balling but I see him as someone who has plenty of scope. He reminds me a bit of Luke Parker (not in style) in his draft year. Was well regarded, but not seen quite in the top echelon of his year. Look how he has flourished.

No more reaching, no more cherry picking positional players.
Just the best available kid whenever our time comes to read a name out. Our player development has been terrible of late so we need to start of a higher base as possible.
If they are on par and the selection team have a split vote then pick on a needs basis.
If wells fills the need to try and build a player out of clay please let it be our last pick only.

You do realise that best available is opinion based. Is it best available if you pick who you feel will be the best player eventually?

would we be able to afford Smith or Patton for that matter?

We have lost some many player yet couldn't afford Deludio...why? We had no room for GA this year , but will have next year...why?

Hav eth structured the contracts in such a way to pay a lot to certain players in 2017 , and then have a more level teir system after that? Have they aimed to have only 95% cap in 2017 so they would have 105% the year after?

To me getting Smith would be difficult with a trade more than cap... if he is a FA , it does change it a bit.

But I have doubts the AFL will allow a 6 and 8 without gaining something back from the players , like a push trade between 3 and 6 for eg. etc

And I see little chance of a full no comp system . Perhaps comp may be altered but the comp gained by Melb and SaintK may have helped their rebuild. I doubt it go's totally.

Okay, after giving it a good look and a lot of consideration, I’ve finalised my wish list:

Pick 24 - Jordan Ridley (VM) - 192cm, 79kg - UTIL
Could end up being one of the best players of the draft, but is a bit of a riskier 'bolter' - it's not like Wells to play it safe with our first pick. Having said that, there seems to be a lot of interest and he could even be gone before pick 24. One of the best kicks in the draft, if not the best.

Pick 38 - Joshua Rotham (WA) - 192cm, 79kg - DEF
The Mackie replacement. Very fast, skilful third tall defender. Will never be a key defender but that's what we have Kolodjashnij and Gardner for. Can break the lines and is good in the air.

Pick 42 - Oscar Junker (VM) - 193cm, 84kg - UTIL
Another extremely versatile player, much like Ridley in that he can play anywhere but they are different players. Junker is much better in the air, but doesn't find as much of the football. I could see him playing as a mobile, third tall forward.

Pick 64 - Mitchell Carter (SA) - 196cm, 93kg - FWD
Tall forward that played SANFL Reserves footy all year. I would argue he's the best tall forward in the draft. Among his best games this year was a 28 disposal and one goal game playing as a mobile CHF, and another game where he had 20+ disposals and kicked four. He’s gone under the radar in the phantoms because he didn't play any games in the champs, and I couldn't tell you why.

Pick 72 - Jake Pitman (SA) - 177cm, 77kg - MID/FWD
Just too good a player to overlook. I see him as a Chappy clone, the only question marks are his height and leg speed. He's not slow though, and is a genuine ball magnet with elite skills. Averaged 24 disposals at the champs, going at 80% efficiency and was top 10 for average disposals, tackles, kicks, handballs, inside 50s and contested possessions at the champs. Hard as nails too.

Pick 74 - Father/son - Sam Simpson (VC) - MID

Pick 91 - Rookie Upgrade - Tom Ruggles

Something doesnt add up ....
We shed alot of coin with very little coming back in.
Clearly they have forcast for something and have something lined up for 2018. We`ll also loose Mackie and Lonners next year

It does sound high, but Wells himself said a week or so ago that they were deciding between using five or six picks.
I'm betting on 6. We have alot of needs atm and if the depth is there then why not?

Having 39 and 5 still gives us some flexibility moving forward but also ensures that we don't miss out on a player that we intended to take at the rookie draft.

No your right, I think the best available is a myth in wells eyes. He sings to his our tune, hasn't work out great lately though has is it? I'm saying wells might see with his eyes a player, as you say might eventually be the best with the right development.
Unfortunately our development isn't to crash hot of late therefor I'd stay away from the projects and just pick on exposed form and not potential.

I think that would be assuming our listed players' salaries remain static year-on-year. I'd guess that the salary cap squeeze is due mainly to the emergence of our middle tier players and also our FA signings.
