Excellent summary

I doubt we will lose 10 players this offseason but in terms of players to trade in I would only really want bruest as a Johnson replacement.

Of the academy boys I would say the certainties are setterfield, perryman and macreadie(club has shown its hand with moving him to Sydney and I suspect he is taking it easy given his guarantee of being taken by us). Sproule and mutch are interesting options for us and will depend on the exits. If we lose all of McCarthy, Stewart, downie and Simpson then we certainly need to add some tall timber. Mutch is another accumulating midfielder but the likely loss of Steele and Barrett would give us a need to replace the loss of depth.

Byrne, fisher, lynch, garthwaite and Owen-Auburn would be late to rookie selections and would depend on list spots but I would prefer to remain under the maximum.

No need to elevate Reid and Lloyd at this stage as they are providing cheap mature depth for us.

Palmer is solid depth but wow he was infuriating in the prelim
I love Garthwaite. Only lost 2 one-on-one contests all TAC Cup season. His body reminds me of Dustin Fletcher. His kicking is horrendous but would love him late in national draft or in rookie draft.

I'm with you on that. Seriously under the radar, it appears, with little discussion of his chances. Perhaps his awkward kicking action is off-putting? Just that slightly in-between size at 192 cms (perhaps he might grow another cm or 2) but a good one-on-one defender would be a great option for a late or rookie option.

Kicking looks awkward but it is effective (most times), very long kick.

I'd love to see us rookie list Byrne and/or Owen-Auburn. Both western Sydney (well Byrne is Hills) boys; just the story we need.

Just looking at the contract status page and we have a lot of best 22 players coming out of contract after 2017 season.

Are the players' agents waiting for the next bargaining agreement before pursuing contacts?

I still don't get where all the Patton trade talk is coming from, he will be a giant for life I reckon
Because he is good all of a sudden. We may of had faith, but the other clubs fans were bagging us out all year for hanging in and plugging away with him as he built his confidence this year.
He was killing it in the end and now they want him

I hope he does stay for life but you never know. It wont be this trade period though.

Yep.

Same reason they ask about Kelly.
Same reason they ask about Lobb.
Same reason they asked about Neale.
Same reason they asked about Shiel and Fyfe and Rich and plenty of others in previous years.

Guy gets good. BF notices. BF wants him at their club. Cue 1,000 posters from that club descending on to the board of that guy's club varying between trying to facilitate a trade or demand a trade or masturbate in public, insisting that it's all happening because their club is from his home state or his previously supported club or his dad's coterie membership or the club that sponsors his uncle's farm's dog's urine-based art collective.

At least with the last one you know they're taking the (dog's) piss.

Love Patton, looks to me a future captain up there seems to be a member of that real tight knit group of players around the same age (Cogs, Cameron, Smith, Shiel etc) it's great to see him have an injury interrupted year this year and a great prelim.

Just a question on Lobb - where's all this trade talk come from, just because he's had such a good season or is there something to it?

Good seqson and the WA papers love trade talk about a WA born player coming home.
Havent seen anything from anyone with cred to say he is wanting out.
Thats not to say he isnt but theres nothing out there to suggest it

I think you meant "Un" ;)

Lobb is a WA big man. WA teams need big men. 1+1=47

Is it correct that GWS offered Stewart another year but he declined the offer?

I have a feeling it was a formality. You want to keep someone that young, you'd offer more than a year (standard two at least) but it sets the ball rolling and gives him an out if a trade can't be done. We've indicated we're happy to keep him on if need be, but everyone knows he's low in our pecking order and will need to move for opportunity.

I love this time of year, trade period and draft.
This is our ideal off-season (IMO)
Re-sign Lobb, Kelly, Smith, Patton, Hopper, A Kennedy, M Kennedy, Tomlinson, Williams, Himmelberg, Buntine, Finlayson and Patfull (1 year deal). Oh and of course a 1 year deal for Stevie.
Don't offer a contract to Simpson
Trade Period
We trade Marchbank, Pickett and Stewart for Pick 5 and a future pick (2nd or 3rd) from Carlton.
Trade players wanting out such as Steele (preferably keep), Barrett, Downie, WHE and McCarthy
Draft
Pick 1: Essendon - Hugh McCluggage
Pick 2: Gold Coast (Brisbane bid) - Jack Bowes
Pick 3: Brisbane - Sam Petrevski-Seton
Pick 4: Fremantle - Todd Marshall
Pick 5: GWS (via Carlton) - Andrew McGrath
Pick 6: GWS - Ben Ainsworth (Gold Coast's selection via Richmond (Prestia), points will be used to select Bowes, so this pick will slide down the draft order)
With us still having 2 first rounders and 2 second rounders plus more picks for outgoing players (such as McCarthy, WHE, Steele, Barrett, Downie etc), we should have enough points to match bids for Setterfield (potentially slipping down the draft order due to poor form and injuries), Perryman, Macreadie and possibly Sproule/ Mutch. We could even accumulate points for the 2017 draft as there looks to be some guns in there.
What is everybody's thoughts on this trade period and draft?
