Nah the wrists, quite bent and the weight is rolling back into the fingers. I've had wrist probs from other sports and maybe its just me but sends a shiver down my spine
It takes a bit of work to get the flexibility in the wrists and shoulders, but that's how they're meant to be done.

The weight is mainly borne by the collarbone the wrists just keep it in place.

My two year old would be embarrassing... every time she sees a green oval with some kind of sport it's "Go Giants!"
I remember being in a lighting store when my eldest was two, something fell and she let loose with "f@$(ing hell". I had told her mother not to swear in front of her:p Anyway I am trying to be cool and not react and her mother is in a state of apoplexy. My two year old gets this look on her face that I have seen many times in the ensuing 11 years and starts running up and down the aisles yelling "f@#$ing". This elderly couple looked at me appalled, I said indignantly "where are that child's parents" and walked out the door and got in the car.

I've seen a couple of articles talking about how the standard of training has stepped up, Damien Austin has lifted the standards, mediocrity isn't being accepted any more, training has gone to another level, etc.

For example: http://www.lions.com.au/news/2015-12-23/roaring-on-the-track

"The training standards, with boys pulling each other up, is the big change," he (Rocky) said.

"Just making sure we're getting quality sessions … I think that's something Damien has started to instil in this group.
These type of statements are positive, great and all that but what does it imply about what was going on the last few years?

In 2011 when Brett Burton joined as fitness coach, Blacky was absolutely raving about him. When it was reported that he was leaving Brisbane, there were 2 clubs chasing him according to reports and he was signed by the Crows. He is clearly no mug.

We've seen Leppa say (and forum members who have attended training have agreed) that Tom Bell is leading the way on the track.

My questions:
  • Should it be a worry that a new recruit has come in and bossed the rest of the players on the track?
  • Is Bell just a monster of fitness?
  • If not, has training been up to standard in the last couple of years? Our team as been notorious for getting hammered in red time for a while now.
  • Has training/standards/culture really stepped up a notch or is this part of the usual hyperbole we hear every season?
  • Do our poor training facilities have much to do with this situation?
Cheers

Bell and Bastinac have slotted into the top 4 or 5 runners at the club which is where they were at their previous clubs. Their running ability are one of their big selling features which lead to them being acquired so that is not a surprise or anything to be concerned about. They are not streeting the current players.

There is always plenty of positive feedback on new fitness guys and every season is the hardest yet and the players are always the fittest they have ever been. It is very hard to make a call on the truth of these types of things before getting a look at them once the season proper starts. I do have more confidence in Austin though as he is not a novice like Burton was when he came to the Lions and he has come from a successful program.

From the pics I've seen, Austin seems to have returned some bulk when I thought we were playing a bit light under Burton and still think that was a major factor in losing contested ball and fading in red time due to the street fight nature of all the contested footy in the modern game.

I wouldn't be worried. Just validates the tougher approach to increasing the focus on culture and shaking up the joint a bit to command a greater respect amongst each other. Lots of injuries to the senior group make sit hard to maintain standards.

Further highlights the thought behind the recruiting of players with a professional approach. Looks like the tough love from Leppa and Rockliff and their ability to take the constructive criticism on the chin and be better leaders is paying off.

The fitness bloke was recruited from the team that has the most storied culture of all.

Things are never as bad or good as they seem.......

I tend to think most preseasons involve clubs saying that it's the best ever and everyone is so fit etc anyway. It's just good PR. And when there's a new fitness guy in, you can really ramp up the positivity.

Although I would enjoy a more realistic line - "Yeah, actually we were looking much better last year. Guys are dogging it this time around. Be surprised if any of them got off their arses over the holidays."

I use the same tactic every time I get some from the misses...

Not if you consider that players are usually traded in to fill a hole or weakness... obviously the club has identified a weakness in the team and have traded well is how I would look at it

very true... Ive always said every team is cruising in preseason then within 4 games of the season 4 teams are usually going "Our heck"

'To tell you the truth, the new draftees are a bit of a disappointment. I wish we still had those guys we traded for picks.'

Remember also the rules have changed this year, training had to change anyway to be more endurance rather that shorter bursts at maximin speeds. With less interchange they are building endurance and most clubs have commented on the training changes within their squads. No doubt some recruiting took into account we needed more 'runners' so Bell and Bastinac where good trades for multiple reasons. I don't think anything was poor before its just a rule change driving different methods and players and coaches commenting on the changes.
