What I’m really happy about is the fact we didn’t draft any KP defenders. That tells me the club is confident Pearce is coming good, and Cox will be pushing for a spot.

At the AGM on Wednesday, Ross said that the club had recently dropped the ball when recruiting character (no he didn't mention any names but we can all think of a few people), and that they would use character as an important criterion in the draft (and already did in the trade period).
Brayshaw is clearly very well regarded, and I think Cerra is too.

If we stuck with character so strongly, we wouldn’t have picked Luke Ryan. Don’t like that comment.

I dunno about that. Unless you are aware of character flaws in Ryan that I'm not. We still picked up a mature age from the VFL.
Previously, when we picked someone, the comment would be: "we'll back our systems / culture in"
Now the comments are all about character.

Ryan is a hard worker albeit a bit rough around the edges, similar to Wilson, no problems with his character

Yes bar one minor incident of having a beer with Cox and thier parents after a game I don't think he's done a thing wrong.

Freo definitely going for aboriginal trade in rather than drafting them in ND draft the last two year but don't think got anything to do with character or racism drafting .

Luke Ryan would admit himself that he wasn't sure he would handle stepping up to AFL commitment.

We seem to take a VLF mature aged player almost every draft, give them a look and if they aren't up to it they leave

Insanely good. Quietly confident we’ll be a force to be reckoned with next year and certainly 2019.

Hey agreed, no issue from me - but a few other clubs were put off.

Ryan already had a reputation as "a bit of a lad" who enjoyed a big night out with his mates. Some AFL clubs even dodged him because of that, and recruiters constantly rang his Coburg VFL coach Peter German last year asking whether they could trust him

Your ethnicity shouldn't come into.

The Hill brothers both have good character but Simpson not so much.

Character, Talent, need and location ie Prefer WA kids should come into it.

Josh Simpson is a ripping young lad who had some difficulty adjusting to an AFL environment, fatherhood and cultural demands.

Has never been a pisshead or on the gear, I would rate his character over Brad Hill's every day of the week.

Or we could come up with a gameplan that relies less on them like Richmond did.

We now have Matera, Balla, Walters, Bennell, Crowden, Switkowski, Grey, Brayshaw, Langdon who can all play as effective small/Med forwards in our 22.
