Just a thought, but I imagine it wouldn't take much to trade up to #2 and leapfrog Carlton for Rayner.

If Gold Coast have their heart set on a Jack Higgins or Jarrod Brander type, then it could potentially be as simple as giving them 4, 43 and Swallow. To be a bit more realistic, you could switch out pick 43 with an incoming pick in the 30s from someone, but the general idea is still the same.

Swallow + 50% of his salary + 4 for pick 2 could work in that scenario.

THE BRISBANE Lions will target a hybrid midfielder with the No.1 pick in November's national draft.

Coach Chris Fagan outlined the club's plans for the coveted first pick after the Lions lost to North Melbourne on Saturday and in the process picked up the wooden spoon.

"I think we need to keep bolstering our midfield," Fagan said.

"Looking for that hybrid guy that can win it on the inside and spread.

"We should be able to find one of those at the top of the draft I would imagine."

Among the favourites to go near the top of the draft are Western Jets' Cameron Rayner and Bendigo's Paddy Dow, who would both appear to fit Fagan's bill nicely.

The Lions have developed well in Fagan's first season, but their midfield is still a bit thin.
So the definitely picking Dow then.

Very disappointed in yesterday, Dow was the one I wanted. Fits our need the best and has big upside to him.

I hope we are talking with Blakey and Scott and offering them 4-5 year deals like Sydney did to Mitchell. Offer good to big money year 3-4/5 to get them to move from home to play for the club their Dad's were premiership players.

If we don't get Martin and/or Kelly move some of the old guys on, play the kids. Finishing bottom would give us the 1st pick plus TT, Crocker and hopefully Blakey and Scott. 4 top 20's and an improving Crocker. That's a very quick rebuild.

Can't move on all of Waite, Goldie, Gibo, Spitta, Thompson, Thomas and Hansen. We wouldn't want to bring in 7 kids this year and we might struggle to find 5 guys we want to move on next year for the above 5. The guys we don't move on can help the kids in our new VFL team.

Not sure what Goldie in worth. A 2nd in 17 + 18? Use 3 picks this year and trade out 43 and 61 for a pick next year. We should try to trade out this years picks which we will not use for picks next year. Can always package two for one next year to gain more points.

Is that another Atley for the pioneers?
Jacob Atley.

Our boys all follow him so he must be related to Shaun and Joe. Edit: youngest brother

#16 Jacob Atley – A really rangy outside player, Atley didn’t find much of the ball but made an impact when he did. His highlight for the day was a two-bounce dash down the Mary St wing which eventually sent the ball deep inside the Pioneers 50. One to watch for 2018 purely for his pace and the x-factor it brings.

Yes, was wondering about this option myself. What would the difference be for them I wonder?

Can't help you with any real info that isn't on the draft board. I have seen it reported and I do agree that Brisbane will target the best clearance player available, so going by the D&T board and elswhere, I figure Davies Uniake & Worpel were the best guesses. Particularly as both boys hail from semi rural areas, which tends to be Brisbanes drafting inclination.

The draft points difference is roughly a thousand points (pick 17-18) so I assume we would also have to throw in a player.

Firstly, I'm assuming we do this only to get Pick 1 which we use for Kelly, assuming 4 alone won't do it. I'm assuming we wouldn't rate the difference in quality in this year's draft as significant enough to bother trading up for.

Secondly, I'm assuming it's a player or player/low pick combination as it'd be pointless throwing in another pick that might otherwise have been bundled with Pick 4 for JK.

Firming into the top 4. Looks like plenty of options for us, considering Rayner, Dow, LDU and others (D Forgarty will be a steal, whoever gets him).

If they would cop 4 and 22 for pick 1, and pick 1 satisfied GWS, then I think they would do that deal.

However, GWS now have the whip hand seeing as we don't have PSD 1, and those navy blue tanking pieces of shit are now lurking ahead of us.

Hopefully so.

I can't see it being that easy. GWS will set out to squeeze us out of calculations altogether in the hope Josh re-signs for 2 years rather than end up at carlton or brisbane/gold coast/carlton via the psd. We have significantly diminished leverage provided other clubs want to match his contract and I assume those navy blue parasites would do it in a heartbeat regardless of josh's wishes. Just look at nick stevens for example.

I know josh wants to leave sydney and I know he has only met with north and is only considering north. Don't believe any of the carlton & stkilda bullshit. He has not and will not meet with them.

I reckon GWS will put on the maximum squeeze to try and force him to stay for the short term contract. Perhaps they will piss in his pocket about assisting a move to north at the end of 2019.

Of course, if this happens I want north to set out on a blitzkreig style raid on the rest of the GWS list.

Liam Ryan was quiet last week - two goals and only one huge hang - but turned it on yesterday:

"Subiaco extended their unbeaten run to 19 games and ended East Perth’s finals hopes with an emphatic 42-point win at Leederville Oval.

Led by another sublime display from spring-heeled forward Liam Ryan, the Lions surged to a 16.14 (110) to 10.8 (68) victory.

Ryan put on a masterclass, combining marvellous aerial feats, kicking six goals and helping set up others for teammates with creative work deep in attack.

Ryan flies high.Picture: Daniel Wilkins
It added to an already impressive highlights reel for Ryan in 2017 and guaranteed he would win the Bernie Naylor Medal as the league’s leading goal kicker with 68 for the season.

Ryan’s dynamic display would also have impressed AFL talent scouts at the match, the 20-year-old expected to feature at the national draft later this year."

So good he's doing it with his eyes closed :thumbsu:

Gold Coast have 6 picks in front of pick 43, so I don't think it would have any value to them.

Doesn't sound like meat grinder material.

Reads like rookie at best unless he is as quick as lightning and has Jarmanesque foot skills.

A 173cm/73kg inside midfielder in the AFL running in to the likes of Martin, Cunnington, Dangerfield & co.? I'd like to agree with my mate, the big roo, but I can't see how he won't get mauled.
