If someone like st.kilda wanted to trade their 2 first rounders for our top pick, I'd nearly be inclined to do it. We need multiple top 15 picks over a few years. 1 pick 1 doesn't make a team infinitely better.

I doubt GWS would accept one of them only so no point making that trade...

It's an interesting discussion point

If we weren't in the market for trading our first pick I'd agree however if the draft is seen to drop off after the top 3-4 and we are going to trade a first round pick then we're stuck... unless we think GWS might accept a pick 6 & end of first round with us retaining pick 8.

I'm only talking on the assumption that we aren't trading for kelly.

This whole draft thread is pretty well useless if we trade out first.

We need to bring Greg Miller in on a consultancy basis.

He fluffed up a lot but the way he turned Peter Bell into 6, 8, 37 and Jess Sinclair would be very handy right now.
I think every club would like to trade with turn of the millennium Fremantle each off-season.

Would be madness to use 1 for Kelly.

GWS can get stuffed, they've been over-serviced with picks, so as long as we ethically offer them something reasonable if they don't take it well so be it.

Welcome Kelly for nothing, i'll be furious if we give our 1st up knowing we can get him for free if we really wanted to play hardball.

Firstly, Kelly would need to agree to this approach, screwing over GWS and effectively the AFL. Not sure he would do that.

Furthermore the AFL will simply not let that happen, make no mistake.

IF we get Kelly, we will gve up pick one at a minimum.

Well that sounds pretty shit to me.

If we offer our 2nd and 3rd picks, plus a handy player that should be enough.

Kelly and keeping our 1st must be our aim, plus i'd hope Kelly (if he nominates us) prioritises our interests over the AFL's franchise.

GWS have had millions of top picks, AFL have no reason to be annoyed.

Hypothetical.

IF Dusty happened to land at Arden Street and JK didn't, would we necessarily pick Rayner (aka mini Dusty)?

I reckon we have our own mini Dusty in the making; Mr Cam Z.. Then again what's better than one Dusty? Three of them!!!

We need a bit of diversity - had the same issue with our one dimensional contested mids. I'd rather cerra or Dow

We could have a very interesting trade period if we keep 1.

Brissie and GC won't take Rayner.

But they may prefer the same player out of DOw, LDU and Cerra

With GC having an abundance of second round picks,

We may be able to trade pick 1 for pick 3 and a second round pick.

And still get Rayner if we preferred him.

Why? There is no logical reason for this to happen if we finish last. If GWS don't want to accept a trade for lower picks, that's on them. We hold the bargaining power.
The odds of Kelly holding his club over the PSD barrel is slim to ****all.

GWS will want pick 1 and will hold out for it. The AFL will watch on and intervene like they did with Jeager if progress is not made in a manner in which they think appropriate given they will be concerned with protecting their investment.

Odds pick 1 is involved id say 98-100%.

I get your point.
However, Kelly can go to his club of choice (NM) and ensure that the club does not have to give up anything substantial (pick 1). Wouldn't it be in Kellys best interest if he was coming to us and we kept Pick 1 to increase the chances of a flag?

Sure, if there was no emotional connection to his team mates, current coaches and GWS. But there is. And he won't do that. Even so, the AFL would not let it happen. Most of their work is done behind the scenes and in this case they would be having stern words with player, manager and North to prevent this from happening.

^^^exactly. Nothing wrong with giving up pick 1 for Kelly. Take a look at draft history and you'll see the chances of us getting a better player with pick 1 aren't great.

I'm all aboard the Rayner train.

Dow is now injured and for mine seems a typical vanilla safe North type anyway.

Take the game breaker for once!

We've already got too many mids with no tank. Even if Rayner turns out to be the most talented player in the draft, he is not the type we need. Nothing vanilla about Dow. He is explosive, evasive and skilful. Would be my first choice.

Edit: will get better as he puts on size too.

Still a chance we could get a lesser name to walk. Especially if we don't land Dusty.

I think this has merit.

Looking at the indicative draft order based on how I think this round will finish, Gold Coast will have picks 3,20,22,24,30, 38 and 56.

We have 1,18, 43, 61

We need Toby Greene to kick his dog and then theirs a chance he might go thru the PSD

He's worth every bit of pick 1 and more.
Top 5 player in the league with a rocket

Interesting theory. Why do you think GC and Bris won't want Rayner? Do you think NMFC would prefer a proven mid?

With the make up of our current midfield there is absolutely no way we should be considering Rayner. We already have more than enough mids with no tank.

And considering most on here want to see the back of Gibson (our only elite running midfielder), it's would become even more of a problem.
