Just as an overall matter, do you see a little ahead of previous in this "match up" so to speak.

Previous: N Brown / Frost
Today: Dunn / Schade with Keeffe

So are we ahead or a bit behind.

Personally Frost was a trier, I'm meh about losing him and either of new ones I'm more than pleased about as replacements. Brown.... not as sure, he was good enough, though now it is what it is.

Keeffe for me is ahead of the above IF he returns to pre two year holiday play, and that we just done know.

Keeffe - upgrade on Brown with better skills and ability to go forward (perhaps less defensive ability)
Schade - upgrade on Frost
Dunn - replacement for Marsh (who left by his own choice) with better skills but shorter shelf life
McLarty - longer term prospect taken with our first available live pick
McCarthy - another possibility.
Reid - likely to be better than last year injury wise

Looks like an upgrade to me. Not the greatest of all time but certainly more skilled and more upside

Good highlights

At about 1:00 where Elliott does the spoil you can see an AFL coach sitting in the shadows of the light pole , spying and taking notes.

Big assumption to make with Keeffe being an upgrade on Brown after two years out of the game.

Saad went from best 22 at St Kilda to being delisted after a year on the rookie list when he returned from his drug ban. Keeffe hasn't even had a competitive hitout yet and you're calling him an upgrade on the guy who was our first choice full back for the better part of 6 years...

Agree. Calling a Keeffe a Upgrade over Brown after missing 2 Years must show how Little Timmy from Thomastown rates Brown

Yes it's an assumption. Thanks for reminding me he's been out of the game for two years. I didn't realise that. Maybe I'm too out of it after yesterday's StKilda festival

I clearly stated he was an upgrade in terms of skills and versatility but not defence. The one and only trick Brown has is better than Keeffe and at times we may miss his one on one block defence. But as a creative option assuming he plays to his ability he's better than Brown.

Not sure Saads failure to return is a template for anything. Long bow there.

I rate skill over lack of skill. Brown will always be the better defensive defender but he doesn't zone well kick well run well play ground level well handball well or mark well.

Keeffe has missed 2 Years and how long will it take IF ever get back to something Close to Good Enough for AFL level

Yep and thats partly why Dunn has been recruited. For depth. Schade too for that matter. Its also why we spent our first live pick on a key defender.

Who knows how long he will take but its not as if hes been injured the past two years. No reason to think he cant get back into it pretty quickly. The club thinks he can. Beside its not as if Brown has any upside.

Great question.

It's Brown/Frost/Marsh
v Dunn/Schade/Keeffe

Brown and Dunn are comparable in quality. Brown is the slightly better pure shutdown player but Dunn with his 1v1 marking, intercepting and more penetrating ball use of the two I'd argue is the marginally better of the two. They're both best 22/AFL standard types.

Schade, Keeffe, Frost and Marsh also are all of comparable ability.

Frost is the better shutdown player, Marsh the better runner from defence and Schade and Keeffe both are the cleaner ball users who like Marsh also intercept from the back half.

Overall nothing much lost, nothing much gained.

It could be argued those stocks we have less holes and relatively more complete games. So if you had to pick, this years group I'd go with if pressed to choose, though Marsh is a real loss.

I forgot about Marsh actually.
Good point. Had value. Just forgot which is pretty silly of me.

Ofcourse it would be close to universal that down back Reid is king and key. That much I'm sure of.

I reckon you overrate Frost, Knightmare. Although he still could turn outr to be a good ordinmary Zac Dawson type ( I say that in a good way, Dawson has been consistent and steady without ever being a star)

And at the risk of pointing out the obvious, sadly rating Marsh is pointless. There was a spot for him on the list if he wanted it but he didn't want it for his own personal reasons.

Keeffe if he can return to his form trajectory is clearly an upgrade on those two. Schades value is unknown at this stage but he already seems to be better equipped than Frost.

They are up but last night 'quarters' 2 and 3 had a glitch.

In any case, De Goey was at the centre for every bounce in the first quarter so you need to be more circumspect in future rather than making a blanket and wildly inaccurate statement like he was poorly utilised and not played through the middle - which makes it appear that the coaches were not giving him a chance in the middle. The correct assessment would be that De Goey got his chance in the middle and wasn't particularly effective.

Just to add. Not playing Degoey in the guts wouldn't be poorly utilising him. In his junior career, he played up forward. He's shown that he is AFL standard as a forward (just). He's yet to show that he's close to being an AFL standard midfielder, despite having demonstrated the occasional mouth watering flash.

.

Brown is an overrated shutdown defender. The range of opponents he is suited to is too small. He lacks the agility for many of the most dangerous forwards around. Not that many of his suitable match ups should be getting an extremely tight tag. For this reason, against many teams, you're left with a tight tag on someone who you should be peeling off.

Keeffe is a neat kick, but a creative option? His biggest knock a few years ago was his slow decision making with ball in hand...

Glacial might be more apt. Between that and how easily he loses confidence he had flaws the equal of the guys we lost. Who know's if they remain or if he's developed others. Time will tell.

I don't know where you got the idea that I rate Frost?

I'd say we possibly could have kept him and gave him away too cheaply (though my premise there is picks are overvalued).

Frost is a servicable backup but someone I came to view as depth.

If I was to rank that group (including Reid, Dunn, Brown, Marsh, Schade, Keeffe, Frost), I'd have him behind all others. Perhaps ahead of Keeffe for now, but Keeffe with his rebounding capabilities is certainly the more talented and less limited of those.

Neat kick helps. Improved decision making could turn neat kicking into a weapon. Brown had neither!
Improved decision making at this point in his career isn't something I'd be banking on tbh.

i was referring to a recent post of yours where you said

Schade, Keeffe, Frost and Marsh also are all of comparable ability

I believe you overrate frost by that comment.
