Training 2017 Preseason

1) a percentage a lot nearer 100 would be great.
2) as R18 says go into the 2nd half of most games at least with the hope of a victory ie. be competitive and resilient.
3) a few of the 2-5 year guys really have breakout seasons and stand up as potential leaders of the club, eg. McStay, Mayes, Andrews, Cutler, Robertson, Gardner, Taylor, Close.

edit- we have 20 (including 8 rookies) players coming out of contract at the end of this season.
4) re sign Josh Schache, Tom Cutler, Ben Keays and Reuben William at a minimum. would also love to see a few players i am a fan of at their best play well enough to earn a new contract ie. Ryan Harwood, Nick Robertson, Michael Close.

5) Rocky will be a big story all year if he doesn't re sign early, personally would love to see him turn it around and sign before the bye round.

It's going to have to be a "know it when I see it" thing for me.

I can't set a wins/loss benchmark for us at this stage but clearly the weekly blowouts have to stop.

Obviously I need to see something resembling an AFL standard approach to defending, and that goes for the whole team not just the back six.

I want to see our 2-5 year players continue their development trajectories and not stagnate.

I want to see players have sustained periods of impacting in their position over weeks to months instead of saying "well player X looked pretty promising on a wing this week".
Agree with these fundamentals...respect, no blowouts, player development and that should result in 7 to 10 wins . Dont lets forget 2 seasons back the Doggies senior players threatened to leave if the coach stayed, the captain walked, and they were supposedly a basket case. If we start well ,with the draw we have , anything could happen.

Geezuz! Just when we get a whole new vibe and team spirit, we now will be worried about, and go through the crap stuff with managers, threats to leave etc, to get those signatures...They better get cracking and sign the ones they want.

No pussyfooting around with the managers either, lay the sums on the line, take it or leave it.

12 is about normal isnt it? 1/3rd of the main list seems about right. Of that 12 only McStay, Keays, Schache and Cutler you would sign right now if you could. The rest (plus rookies) need to prove they are worth a contract past 2017, which is a good thing - hopefully they collectively have a big 2017 preseason.

I know what I'd be giving him as a Nickname:

Including rookies gives a false read given they generally get 1 year contracts. If you have a full rookie list, it is going to look much worse.

Plus, it is healthy to have a reasonable number of players coming off contract so you have the flexibility to continue to regenerate or add to your list. I reckon we saw last year that you lose a bit of flexibility when you commit contracts to guys too early or offer a year or two longer than what a player's performance warrants.

agree POBT, contracts should IMO never be longer that 3 years unless it is a player considered to be in the top few players in the competition eg. Nathan Fyfe, Alex Rance, Gary Ablett types in their prime, then 5 years tops.

If we can stop those 5-10 minute lapses, especially late in quarters, where we are almost completely stagnant with the ball and get heavily scored against without it, we are potentially a 4-5 goal better side immediately.
You got the feeling the players last year were helpless against it and in the end accepted it.

I don't know how many of you are on Instagram and follow the players, but I follow Robbo (Mitch) and I just checked his latest story and he was going for a run at 11:43pm and he captioned it, "Doesn't matter what time you get in!" And I just thought, that's dedication right there. Makes you wonder about his motivation behind the extra yards (ie. chasing the captaincy). I mean, he's always been diligent in his approach to training, but I have a feeling he's really got his eyes set on the position of captain, judging by his extra hard efforts over this Christmas/New Year's break. Thoughts?

I reckon that the players are all given kms that they need to get done each day/week, and he happens to have only been able to fit it in at this point of the evening. I do think he is trying his hardest to continue to prove himself to the team, new coaches, etc, but I suspect he's just getting his homework done here.

Lewey's all for wins and team success.

It's all about team success for Lion Lewy

Lewy Taylor at the Lions' training camp in Launceston

AFTER the most difficult season of his short career, Brisbane Lion Lewy Taylor has simplified his goals for next year.

By the lofty standards he set in his first two years, the 2014 NAB Rising Star winner played poorly last season.

He was dropped at one stage and generally struggled to find anything approaching his best form.

While all this was going on, Taylor was at the centre of a prolonged contract negotiation that played itself out very publicly.

After months of back and forth, the clever midfielder/small forward put pen to paper and signed on for a further three years.

Taylor now has his sights set on a return to his best.

"It was a challenge at times," Taylor told AFL.com.au of his 2016 season.

"A lot of stuff got blown up there. I sat there and let my manager do the work he's supposed to do. I didn't get involved.

"It's part of the job and it's great to get it done and get three more years.

"I can move forward and try and get a few more wins on the board and help the club go forward."

Taylor has played 63 games in his first three years, and although still just 21 (he'll be 22 when the season starts), is already talking like a more experienced player.

"To tell you the truth, it's just about wins for me," he said.

"It's all about winning games now.

"I don't really care about individual success any more, it's about doing things for the team and trying to win.

"If we can have a few more wins than last year it'd be a good result."

Not only personally was it a tough year, but with just three wins (he was a part of two) and coach Justin Leppitsch continually under pressure, Taylor said it was a difficult year for the entire club.

"The losses aren't great, but you've got to push through," he said.

"Hopefully this year we can turn it around for ourselves and our fans."

There are 4 guys on that list I'd be comfortable signing up now. The rest have a lot to prove.

Contrary to reports I think we will see once again a lot of changes come next year, most of those guys haven't come close to showing they have what it takes.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to remember hearing and reading on a few occasions how they plan on keeping the list pretty stable after the huge player turnover of seasons past.
I think that might have been under leppas reign.

He's been smashing it over the break. I've really enjoyed seeing it - I think it was just before Christmas, or maybe the day after boxing day? Saw another insta post of his back in the Gabba gym for a session. Hopefully this effort doesn't go entirely unrewarded.
