Would much rather we hang on to our 2018 picks, considering the strength of that draft and all. As others have said, if a deal isn't made, we can likely snare Lever with 10 alone. 10 and 27 is a reasonable trade.

I really don't want to lose our 1st next year. 3 years with no 1st rounder starts creating a bit of a gap in our age demo.

Plus, **** the Crows
Excuse my ignorance, but isn't there a rule not allowing clubs to trade away a first round pick more than 2 consecutive years? or was that another dream I had?

Not pleased with how much we're looking at giving up for Lever. Losing Watts takes away a quality player and while getting Lever makes up for a lot of that, going 3 years without a first round draft pick means we are running a serious risk of filling up on spuds without adding anyone who is clearly in our best 22. At this point I think I'd rather tell Adelaide to take pick 10 or let him go to the draft so we don't end up screwing ourselves by paying too much.
I think JT is the wrinkle. How many recruiting managers can comfortably say they have nailed the bulk of their late picks?

You need to make two 1st round selections in a 4 year period, but apparently it's not being enforced until 2019. But even then, because we took Oliver and Weideman 2015, we've covered for next year.

'Next years' draft is always the next super draft...

Every year.

Is it? Don't recall seeing a lot of brouhaha over recent drafts. If anything, the most oft heard word that comes to mind is "shallow".

To be fair, it usually is, but why journos think it's an interesting idea to post free agent lists one or two years in advance when 9 out of 10 guys on it will sign new contracts is something of a mystery.

We already have the McDonalds anyway, but they improved. What pair of brothers do will yell at now?
Just made me think who were the last brothers on our list before the McDonalds and it was the McDonalds.

:drunk:

If we keep Watts, giving up the 2018 first rounder seems more feasible IMO. Would really suck to lose a quality player for unders and then overpay for Lever.

But our recruiting team has done very well in recent years. Hunt, OMac, Stretch, Hannan, ANB, Kent, have all been nice late round finds, while Frost was a good trade target + Smith, Maynard, Kielty are coming on nicely on the rookie list as Harmes has.

IMO, adding Lever means we have enough top end talent to build around. Oliver, Petracca, Hogan, Lever are all legitimate all Australian contenders in a few years in the most important positions in the AFL. Viney is too selfless to be AA and a Brownlow threat but he will still be an a grade midfielder

We don't need that much top notch talent on our list right now IMO. If we build a strong culture we can make do with 2nd-3rd round picks until 2019.

Fact is, our pick next year more than likely wouldn't net us a future cornerstone like Lever. Our first this year certainly won't. Why can't we maximise the potential of Gus, Weed, Salem, who were all high picks, and continue developing McKenna, Hannan, OMac, Smith, Maynard etc. who clearly have talent, before worrying about what our 2018 pick will be.

And if we eventually become a successful side we won't be able to keep the young, superstar talent ticking over. All of our first rounders will be 15+. All clubs have suffered from an inability to sustain ten years of dominance and that's normal. What we can do is build a strong culture to minimise rebuild time, similar to what Hawthorn has done.

I'm assuming people have gone a bit cold on fritsch if they're talking about us trading our later picks?

Probably more of a case of the focus being 100% on trades, and the draft not being thought about until we come out the other side and see what we've got to work with.
