Only had the 4 lads drafted this year , best of all WA schools , equal best of any Aust school. Clearly not the place to be

Personally I don't think the school will have had that big a hand in their development as players. Mostly just luck to land two talented prospects. Seeing as you're a Port supporter you probably aren't too aware of just how s*** the school has become. Obviously this is just my opinion though, take it with a grain of salt

Yeah I mentioned this earlier today, there are obviously exceptions to the trend but on the whole the first round is where most quality KPFs come from.

First round is where most of the quality of anything comes from typically, I don't think there is a massive amount of investment in key position players in the second and third rounds, most KPP that haven't gone early tend to be still around during the rookie draft. I don't necessarily think it is because there isn't talent worth picking up, club lists are not very deep, you need more than half your list to play each week and you need another 10 or so to be depth, that doesn't really give you a lot of room for 5+ year project prospects so I just don't think many are given a go.

It was amusing when we picked up Brown, he was highly rated before he did his knee and missed out on his draft year, he went into the VFL and played for one of our affiliates and he had a strong year in the VFL, he still went quite late and some experts thought we went early on Brown, that he would have still been around in the later rounds or as a rookie.

We picked up Nick Larkey (198cm/85kg) with pick 73 last year and he is looking pretty good, looking a lot better than first round McKay to date. You just never know with KPP. It is great to get your hands on an amazing KPP with an early draft pick, but it is quite scary how many of them go bust. It is not without significant risk.

They need to raise the draft age so that
a) eliminates the risk of draft picks
b) players can come in and make an immediate impact for there teams
c) can have proper state of origin with the quality underage for AFL players
d) improve the quality of the state leagues
e) build the hype
f) allow the players to grow up out of the spot light

kinda agree but we also need to prolong careers of players. We need more players reaching to their mid 30's.

Its not gonna be an attractive career pathway for potential recruits when at most their career is going to be 10 years long. This is especially the case for kids who are talented in multiple sports. The competitive nature of sports in Australia is at an All time high and its gonna increase every year. That career span will play a part in kids decision to chose a sport.

Footy isn't going to struggle for numbers anytime soon. Plus most players study while playing now too. It isn't though they are going all eggs in one basket.

We don't need more mid-30s past it players going around. The Fletchers and Harveys are the exceptions, not the rule.

Nahhhh. Some 18 year olds are ready to play (see SPP). Furthermore, if a player isn't ready, are you telling me there are better places to develop AFL players than an AFL club?

Why fix what isn't broken. Afl used to be better than what it is now and the reasoning behind this statement is changes, particularly rule changes.

And imagine the hype of him coming into the draft at 20 ready to have a really big impact on his team. By raising the draft age you take more risk out of the clubs selections and you can allow for shorter rebuilds, overall raising the standard of play. Obviously this would go hand in hand with better development programs particularly for the young adults.

Imagine the hype if they made him wait until he was 26!

Line has to be drawn somewhere.

Yeah and I'd say 20-21 is great. It will mean teams can go aggressively at the draft for two years, possibly even just the one and come out half decent the next, rather than having to wait a possible 4 years to see if the players develop. The players would be rearing to go. For every one of SPP or Ollie Wines there is, we'll see 25 more each year. You would weed out more of the boys that don't quite have the heart or want required to play AFL.

Good news indeed for Mutimer extending his contract for 2 years. He must be doing something to impress the club

Eeyore mode - hopefully it's not a case of extending a players contract for too long, too early and we're stuck with some deadwood on our list until 2019 if his development stalls

At least we can still delist and re-pick them in the rookie draft lol (e.g. Colledge, Fmac). ;)
I actually do think that we should be a bit more cautious about giving untried players an extra 2 years tbh, unless they've already impressed in a number of AFL games and other clubs might be interested in poaching them...

I honestly don't know why people want to raise the draft age. AFL footballers have a short peak 10 years if you are lucky. Given the unique physical and aerobic conditioning needed to play at the top level it puts a load of stress on human body.

I'd say it's more a sign of players that are older being moved on next season.

I also think we would lose a lot of talent. If players had to wait until they were 20 or whatever, many would have gone in other directions. Maybe other sports maybe deeper into studies or careers. If there is no guarantee you will get drafted, why would you wait around another couple of years? Sure, the top players may stay but a lot of other players would do other things.
