Well they can give us 8 and 2018 first right now.

Now if this whole fantasy trade comes off we take 8 + 9 and some picks in the 20s this year.

It's simply to fantastical to work.

That would be my preference, too. Saints won't challenge next year so may as well pick up Gaff for free. We probably asked for 2 first rounders and Saints said "meet ya back here next year, same table"

Saints will be in or around the 8 next year.

You blokes are the ones desperate to end up with a first-rounder this year so it's inevitable that you'll have to pay over. Should just suck it up and accept the two second-rounders for Stringer tbh

If this is the case then there is no need to get us involved - they could just keep their 2017 first pick as it stands and also hold on to the two second round picks they get for Stringer. Remember they refused Essendon’s 2017 first pick for Stringer but with this proposed deal they are not getting anything for Stringer by way of 2017 draft picks.

Yeah. I didn't realise it in my initial excitement at the prospect of pick 9 but the only way this makes any sense is if we are also trading next years first rounder for their second rounder.

Can't see how Gablett could be worth pick 19 at his age. He's probably worth a 2nd or 3rd rounder at best. Might only play 1 or 2 more seasons. GC will probably accept whatever Geelong offer, considering that he has said he'll retire otherwise. That being said, if he was an FA, the AFL might still give GC a 1st round compo pick...

Ablett still contracted though and still required at GCS ..

I still don’t understand what’s in it for the doggies. They don’t need us to offload stringer - just take the 2 second rounders and walk away.

Maybe they’re looking at someone like Hayes and figure they don’t need 9 - let’s see if we can extract some value from a downgrade and still get our man.

But if its really about us wanting to trade into this years draft at the expense of next years, no thanks.

How did we go from not really getting involved in this trade period to this???

Bit like us this year. Being a Vic side definitely aids them for a crack but suspect they are coming into their window in the next couple of years so they could pick up Gaff for nothing well inside their window, in his prime, and keep their first rounders to compliment him.

I'm just theorising. Got no idea. Makes sense to me, though. Feel free to bookmark it and call me an idiot next year. :)

No way, that would be an awful trade for WC.

Pick 13> Picks 25, 30

Our likely low 2018 1st in a strong draft> Pick 9 in a weak draft.

WBD make out like crooks.

Article says it's swap of future picks, so at the very least we'd be getting their 2018 2nd back if we give up our 2018 first.

But it could be anything, swap of our 2018 2nd for their 3rd, or a swap of 2018 firsts and they back themselves to finish above us.

Ive been saying shopping our 2018 picks is a good idea if we back ourselves to do ok. They will be overvalued with the whole comp thinking we'll slide.

Makes the last couple of days interesting at least

If we do trade our 2018 first, it's going to be hell dealing with people who want to tank every year and don't know that we don't have the pick :(
Tank for a better second rounder??

Seriously but - next year we will be rebuilding on the run

What we should have done this year.

Please try to understand the difference between that and tanking.

Look at teams like geelong and hawthorn - who ditch players BEFORE they are absolutely cooked rather than AFTER

There is 1 good reason to look at loading up on this draft rather than next years and thats backing in recruiting and the development of the players so they can contribute and bring home a flag while some of our current stars are still a factor.
I think this is what they're doing, I reckon they've identified the mature age talent they want to bring in and have worked out they'll need second round picks to pick them. Basically loading up and gambling on one last premiership run with Kennedy and Nic Nat before they do a complete rebuild.

We do nothing people cry, we do something people cry, nothing we can actually do...

I say

The other potential good reason to load up on this draft rather than next years is we are losing a lot of players this year and have potentially a lot of spots to fill. The way our list looks for next year etc likely to be much fewer slots to be filled and hence they are loading accordingly. Personally i think you should be able to trade up to 2 years in advance.

In say the NFL you see teams that are successful both ways. Some teams are good traders, some are good drafters, some teams are good all round and some are shit. It's working out whats best for your club. For west coast we really need to draft as due to travel and a whole host of other factors we aren't going to be a destination club for trades. Someone like collingwood, sydney or essendon however could focus more on trading in players due to the positive factors on that scale.

Yeah. We clearly believe we can get Kelly and maybe a few other guys we want from three second rounders.

AND an elite midfield talent with pick 9.

Herald Sun suggesting it’s the 3 2nd Rounders for pick 13 and either pick 32 or 50. Would explain why our 3rd wasn’t used today.

Yep I got that. My point was that they'd probably be better off just doing a straight trade with the Bombers - unless they can manage to extract a future first for us, and I can't really see Rawlings risking that

now get tim kelly. They might not be stars but kelly, ah chee bring a bit of speed and x factor through the middle and along with shuey might offset the lack of pace sheed, redden and Gaff possess. Through in Yeo, Duggan and venables, we might have a handful of explosive/fast players at every stoppage. Don't think we have had that since the mid 2000's.
