Listen to these idiots complaining about the compensation and ladder position. Franklin was Band 1 compo which is a pick after Hawthorn's first. Hawks were top of the ladder that year. Motlop was Band 2 compo which is end of first round pick. If Martin left us this year we'd get pick 18. If he left and we were bottom of the ladder we'd get pick 2. Its fair. Move on. If there's anything unclear and wrong about compensation its that clubs can pay large proportions of undeservingly large contracts, like we did for Vickery to get a second round pick and like Geelong did for Motlop to get pick 19, in order to bump up the contract price which is a key component in AFL's compensation. Keep the level of compensation linked to ladder position because more often than not it'll be a player leaving a rubbish club and just focus on fixing the transparency of contracts.
