Right, based on the Russell Barwick rumour at https://www.sen.com.au/news/2017/07/27/could-complex-deal-help-land-the-biggest-fish-of-all/

What we know:

Zak Jones to Melbourne
Kurt Tippett to the Bulldogs
Dusty Martin to Sydney
Unknown Sydney player to Collingwood

I'm going to assume the Sydney player is Sam Reid. Been linked all year plus his brother is at the Pies.

So, by received.

Melbourne receive Zak Jones
Western Bulldogs receive Kurt Tippett
Collingwood receive Sam Reid, Melbourne 1st round pick
Sydney receive Dustin Martin, Collingwood 2nd round pick, Western Bulldogs 3rd round pick
Richmond receive Collingwood 1st round pick, Sydney 1st round pick

Melbourne give up 1st round pick
Western Bulldogs give up 3rd round pick
Collingwood downgrade 1st round pick and give up 2nd round pick
Sydney give up 1st round pick, Kurt Tippett, Sam Reid and Zak Jones
Richmond give up Dusty Martin.

Not sure if there might be a Melbourne-Sydney pick swap in there. Thoughts?

Collingwood dont have a second rounder this year.

Surely you could break that up into smaller deals. Dees give a first for Zak Jones is it's own deal. Pies getting Reid through FA is it's own deal. Doggies potentially looking at Tippett is it's own deal.

If the Swans are looking at putting together a package for Martin it doesn't have to be a massive 5 way deal. They've got all of their own picks, what they'll receive for Zak Jones and Kurt Tippett and a potential Reid compo pick.

It doesnt need to be as complicated as he suggested but would still need 3 clubs-richmond wont want 2 picks in teens from sydney partly as thats where naish will get bid and partly as they desperately need a key forward so will need an early pick. So sydney would need to ontrade for a top 5 pick otherwise richmond will likely match.

Given Reid is RFA Sydney can always force the trade. The question is whether the deal is going to be high enough to put together the currency to drag Martin off the Tigers who we are assuming will match almost any deal unless a trade is pre-arranged.

I think the Zak Jones element is linked in the sense of the first round pick - if it can pry loose the top 5 pick at Collingwood to send to Richmond they'll certainly offer it up.

I agree on the Tippett thing though, that's about cap room clearance.

So then:

Western Bulldogs receive Kurt Tippett
Sydney receive WB 2nd round pick

Melbourne receive Zak Jones
Sydney receive MFC 1st round pick

Collingwood receive Sam Reid, MFC 1st round pick
Sydney receive CFC 1st & 2nd round picks

Richmond receive CFC 1st, Sydney 1st round picks
Sydney receive Dustin Martin

Tippett is 30 on a lot of money and playing poorly, i cant see anyone giving up a top 40 pick for him, he will be a salary dump for pick 70 odd if he goes.

One interesting what-if re: a Martin mega trade is that assuming that we get a first for Zak Jones and Band 1/2 compo for Sam Reid, that means that we'll have three late first rounders to play with.

Now Richmond already have two low first rounders, so they'll probably want a high first rounder. So we could see us palming off two of those picks for a Top 5 pick.

How believable would any threat of matching Reid's offer be while Syd were making a play for Martin?

Pies would have no fear of calling that bluff in that situation.

Also , dogs giving up a second for Tippett in the same situation ? When they know syd need to clear his salary ? Good luck. Would offer their third if they wanted him.

I think we could do with a bit more speed. And he is a competitive beast which we love. We'll end up with a pick around 12 give or take. That's around the mark.

If you could get him for your R1 this year ..id eat it up. PnP and your just about in the zone.

I'd rather use that pick in a package for Lever, we don't need Zak Jones.

If he wasn't Nathan's brother no Melbourne supporter would be talking about him.

Lever? You think you can get him with a late r1? Cost you that and more. Who are you trading to get the other pick?

I said in a package, I'd quite happily give up our 2017 and 2018 1st round picks for Lever.

If it requires further sweetening then I'd throw in an Alex Neal-Bullen and ask for their 2nd round pick back.

'17 First round pick
'18 First round pick
Alex Neal-Bullen

Jake Lever
'17 Second round pick

Realistically not convinced you'd get a better player at the pick we'd have. Saying that I wouldn't be disappointed if we went to the draft given we've had recent success in draft.
We don't need Zak Jones at all though, like I said if he wasn't Nathan's brother then no Melbourne supporter would be looking at him.

You are selling him massively short by suggesting that we would only be interested because he's Nathan's brother. He's a former first round pick with 4 years of development at a good club who is fast, hard at it and can play a number of roles. Lever would definitely fill more of a hole in the list, but Jones would be a great get for us.

I'm not selling him short at all, Melbourne supporters wouldn't bat an eyelid at him otherwise.

He's a good player but we are better off using the pick in a Lever package or at the draft, Jones doesn't fill a need.

I'm a Melbourne supporter and want him despite what his last name is. Sounds like the club is interested too, so they obviously see a role for him.
